INTRODUCTION


SOLAR ENERGY Solar energy is the radiant light and heat from the Sun that has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar radiation along with secondary solar resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass account for most of the available renewable energy on Earth. Only a minuscule fraction of the available solar energy is used. Solar power technologies provide electrical generation by means of heat engines or photovoltaics. Once converted, its uses are only limited by human ingenuity. A partial list of solar applications includes space heating and cooling through solar architecture, potable water via distillation and disinfection, day lighting, hot water, thermal energy for cooking, and high temperature process heat for industrial purposes. Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute sunlight. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic panels, solar thermal collectors, with electrical or mechanical equipment, to convert sunlight into useful outputs. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.


SOLAR CELLS

Solar cells are semi conductor devices which use sunlight to produce electricity. They are manufactured and processed in a similar fashion as computer memory chips. Solar cells are primarily made up of silicon which absorbs the photons emitted by sun’s rays. Silicon wafers are doped and the electrical contacts are put in place to connect each solar cell to another. The resulting silicon disks are given an anti reflective coating. This coating protects sunlight loss. The solar cells are then encapsulated and placed in an aluminum frame. The process requires continuous monitoring to ensure quality control over a period of time. After the manufacturing process is complete they undergo final test to check their efficiency under normal conditions.

Solar cells provide more energy than other conventional sources with an additional advantage of being light weight and cost effective. Solar cells are very reliable and the solar powered product can run unattended. The use of solar cells demands very little maintenance in their upkeep and are easy to install. A wide range of solar products are available to the consumers today. Solar cells are also noiseless and non-polluting. They have good efficiency and are long lasting.

SOLAR PANELS

Solar Panels are the devices generally comprising of arrays of Photovoltaic Cells which use the solar energy directly from the Sun to generate electricity for our daily use. They make optimal use of renewable energy from the sun and are very much environmental friendly in nature.

The solar panels manufacturers manufacture the solar panels by first cutting the ingots, which are generally cylindrical in shape, into circular disc shaped silicon wafers. There silicon wafers are very carefully cut using saws or other cutting devices. These are then carefully cleaned to remove any impurities which might have arisen in the cutting process. After the cleaning process is completed, the silicon wafers are then polished and metal conductors and the products for doping the wafers for the desired electrical properties are put on each silicon wafer module. The modules are then placed on a flat sheet of solar panel and are spread in a matrix or a grid structure on the sheet. The solar panels are then installed on the roof tops or top of the buildings to get the maximum solar energy from the sun in order to run as expected.


SOLAR LIGHTING SYSTEMS

With the passage of each single day, the importance of saving power for the future generations is being realized by every individual. Measures are being taken up to save the fossil fuels from getting depleted, as they are non-renewable source of energy. Solar lighting systems are one the measures to utilize the unbound sun’s energy. Solar lighting systems work on simple basics, i.e. they trap the solar energy and convert it into electricity that lights up the LED (light emitting diode) present inside them, when there is darkness. The Solar Water Pumping System mainly consists of five components, viz: 1) Solar Panel Photovaltaic Array 2) Mechanical Component (Module Mounting structure) 3) Motor 4) Pump 5) Inverter (Optional for higher back up, if reqd) The SPV array converts the solar energy into DC Power. The module mounting structure holds the module in required position. The DC power generated by the SPV array is converted into AC power by the PCU/inverter. This PCU/inverter is then connected to the load. The AC power output of the inverter is fed into the AC distribution board through a metering panel and isolation panel. The 415 AC 3 phase output of the system can be utilized or as an option it can be stepped up to the desired voltage and thereafter synchronizes with the load.


PHOTOVOLTAIC MODULE : 1) The PV Module is certified IEC 61215-2nd Edition and IEC 61730-2 qualification for PV Module 2) The PV Module is mono crystalline solar cell 3) The PV Module is 200W and the light to electric conversion efficiency is up to 15%. 4) All materials used has a satisfactory output in relative humidity upto 100% between -10*C and +85*C and can withstand dust upto 200km/hr from back side of panel. 5) The terminal box on panel is a provision for the operation for the replacement of cable, if required. MECHANICAL COMPONENT : Metallic frame structure of galvanized steel with stand is to be fixed on the roof of the building and ground surface. The frame structure has provision to adjust angle of the horizontal between 0* to 45*, so that it can be installed at the specified tilt angle.

PROPOSED PROJECTS


(A) REPUBLIQUE DU NIGER An MOU has been signed with the President of Republique Du Niger Government for the electrification of 1000 villages by solar energy, in which the first stage involves electrification of 100 villages. Each village consist of :

• 25 Houses • 8-10 Street Lights • Hospitals / Health Centre • Pumps for Drinking Water • Community Centre & Mosques

The equipments required for the electrification of each village comprises :

• 75W Solar Panel • 100AH Batteries • Inverters of 600W, 1 KW, 2KW and 5KW • Charge Controllers of 20AH and 30AH • Tube Lights of 10W • Fans • 150 litres Refrigerator • 200 litres Water Heater • Solar Cooker • Solar Street Lights • 8W CFL Lamp • Water Pump • 5HP Flour Grinder and • Colour TV

The total value for the electrification of 100 villages is around 66 crores.


(B) GUJARAT GOVERNMENT A MOU has been signed between Solitaire Trade Link Pvt Ltd and Gujarat Government for the development of Solar (Eco) Park in a 60 area land in Porbandar District. The Objective of Solar (Eco) Park is :

1) To promote tourism 2) To educate individual the backdrops of atmospheric hazards caused by

pollutions, reasons for global warming, after math of use of non-renewable energies etc.

3) To develop awareness in the society the uses and benefits of renewable energy.

4) To provide natural accommodation with a clean and pure atmosphere for visitors

5) To demonstrate the working of these technologies through working models and live examples.

6) To educate individuals regarding application of various renewable energy sources, energy conservation and their socio-environmental benefits.

The park will comprise of : • Cottages • Restaurants • Gaming Zone for Children • Exhibition Cum Educational Zone • Moving Trains • Musical Fountains etc all operated using renewable energy.
