Principal’s Message Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Sollers Point Tech.
The faculty at Sollers Point Technical High School are excited to begin instruction in our aca-
demic and technical program areas. Our vision is to provide every student with rigorous, rele-
vant, and culturally responsive instruction in order to provide a 21st century career-technical
education. Every student who attends Sollers Point will complete a technical program and earn
an industry certification as a result of deliberate and exemplar teaching.
In our effort to ensure grading and reporting practices are equitable, accurate, specific and
timely, BCPS has changed Policy and Rule 5210 to ensure that grading practices are support-
ive of student learning. Beginning August 24th, marking-period grades will be based solely on
achievement of course standards. Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate pro-
ficiency. Grades will be based on a body of evidence aligned to the standards. A consistent
grading scale will be used to score assignments and assessments and accommodations and
modifications will be provided for exceptional learners.
Safety and security is a critical foundation of our success. More than 165 video cameras have
been installed in the hallways and common areas. Our outside doors are on automatic locks
and faculty and staff will be monitoring the bathrooms and hallways between classes. Sollers
Point in conjunction with Dundalk and the entire district will monitor daily and period attendance
and lateness through the new BCPSONE Student Information System. BCPSONE parent and
student login information is available in R2067 and by calling Mr. Reed at 410-887-7075.
Students may use the steps on the Delvale Ave. side of the school to enter the building from
7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. After 8:00 a.m., students will need to use the primary school entrance
on the parking lot or CCBC side of the complex for security reasons. Parents may also drop off
students using the parking lot access loop on the north side of the complex as well. Student
parking passes for the entire year are $10.00. Students who ride a bus each morning will be
dropped off from the bus loop. Parents and students may not use the bus loop between the
hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. (Cont’d on page 2)

The commons, library-media center, cafeteria, and auditorium are
shared Dundalk-Sollers spaces. In order to ensure that both schools
maintain a safe and orderly environment, students will wear identifica-
tion badges when they are in the hallways and common spaces. It is
important to remember that our students will remain on the Sollers Point
side of the complex during their ½ day with us. We also do not want
students loitering or standing on the bridges that connect the two
schools.
Sollers Point-Dundalk is a magnificent complex that will require our col-
lective effort to maintain. This building is your house. It is up to you to
protect this house to ensure that you as well as our students of the fu-
ture have a state of the art complex in which to take classes, develop
friendships, and prepare for college and careers.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I
look forward to working with each and every one of you this year.

The 2016-2017 school year brings new beginnings to Auto Technology. This year the auto-
motive program has been revamped. Students will now have each task in a unit broken
down into smaller tasks, known as learning guides. These learning guides help chunk mate-
rial for students and as a result, supports students in learning the material with greater suc-
cess.
Level I
Level I students this year will be learning tool names, how to repair broken fasteners, basic
internal combustion engine principles, oil change service, tire/wheel service and repair,
brake systems, and basic electrical service and diagnostic.
Level II
Level II students will be learning advanced tire/wheel repair in addition to the repair and di-
agnostics of ignition systems, fuel systems, emissions systems, exhaust systems, steering
systems, suspension systems, and advanced engine diagnostics in relation to engine perfor-
mance.
All students this year will be taking their ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) exams in ad-dition to five SP-2 exams. Students in both levels will create a career portfolio consisting of a cover letter, resume’, job references, and all of their certifications. The portfolio will help as-sist the students when they are getting jobs their senior year.
SOLLERS POINT TECHNICAL HIGH
Mr. Michael Weglein - Principal - 1901 Delvale Ave - Dundalk, MD - 21222 Dear Parents/Guardians:
In 2014, Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) established a grading and reporting committee to review and update Policy 5210 – Factors In-
volved in Student Evaluation. The grading and reporting committee began their work by collecting and reading the most recent and relevant re-
search which included books, articles, and current available research. The committee, comprised of parents, teachers, and administrators re-
viewed grading and reporting practices from across the state and the nation. Based on the information gathered, the committee determined the poli-
cy needed to be rewritten to reflect more current research-based practices to better align your child’s grades with his/her achievement of grade-level
standards.
To that end, the new Board of Education Policy 5210 Grading and Reporting was approved in June of 2015 for full implementation beginning Au-gust, 2016. A copy of the new Policy and Rule 5210 are available on the BCPS Web site accessing the following links: http://www.bcps.org/system/policies_rules/policies/5000Series/POL5210a.pdf and http://www.bcps.org/system/policies_rules/rules/5000Series/RULE5210a.pdf.
As outlined in the new policy, starting this school year all student grades will align to identified course or grade-level standards and be based on a “body of evidence.” A body of evidence is simply the information a teacher collects to determine a student’s level of performance. In addition to making sure all grades are based on evidence aligned to standards, (BCPS) wants to ensure that the purpose for assigning grades is clear and con-sistent across all schools. To do this, BCPS established that the primary purpose for determining marking period grades is to accurately communi-cate a student’s level of achievement in relation to the course expectations at a given point in time.
The school system commits to providing equitable, accurate, specific, and timely information regarding student progress towards course expecta-tions which includes feedback to you and your child in order to guide next steps and indicate areas growth areas.
To promote alignment to research-based practices and stakeholder input, the committee oversaw the creation of a procedures manual, which is broken down into six guiding practices:
Grading practices must be supportive of student learning.
Marking-period grades will be based solely on achievement of course of grade-level standards.
Students will have multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency.
Grades will be based on a body of evidence aligned to standards.
A consistent grading scale will be used to score assignments and assessments.
Accommodations and modifications will be provided for exceptional learners.
At the end of each section, a chart summarizes the “recommended” and “not recommended” grading practices.
In the second half of the manual, you will see a section called Reporting, Grade Calculation, and Codes. This section of the manual brings together important information about grading codes, calculations, and procedures into one location.
The 2016–2017 Grading and Reporting Procedures Manual can be downloaded from the BCPS Grading and Reporting Web site - https://www.bcps.org/academics/grading/. The Web site also includes sections on Research, Rational, and Frequently Asked Questions. As we begin the school year, you and your child will be receiving additional information about the new grading procedures. We encourage you to visit the Grading and Reporting Web site, ask questions, and provide feedback. We also strongly encourage you to attend Back-to-School Night where you will have the opportunity to attend an overview session on grading and reporting as well as receive more specific information from your child’s teachers.
Sincerely,
Michael L. Weglein

A Message from the School Nurse Your child’s safety is our concern. On the first day of school students were given a yellow discretionary medication form to be completed and signed by parents/guardians. The form must be returned to the health suite and kept on file. Please note your child will receive a discretionary medication form for each school that he/she attends. Please complete the form for each school. The discretionary medication form includes:
The medications that may be given to your child on an as needed basis should you choose to allow. Medica-tions include ibuprofen, acetaminophen, Benadryl, cough drops, and antacids. The most up to date contact information for your child which is needed in case of an emergency. An opportunity for you to disclose any health concerns that we may need to know.
Students may not carry medications in school including inhalers unless they have doctor’s orders on file in the health suite. If you need a doctor’s order form for a medication, or have concerns related to your child’s health please call the school nurse, Mr. Brian Hoyer, RN at 410-887-7074 or email at [email protected]
School Counseling Whether returning from last year or just recently accepting a seat and joining us, a new
school year brings change and excitement. Regardless of your situation, we welcome
you! Here in the school counseling office we work hard to establish a comfortable and
safe environment for all students to have their many individual and unique needs met.
Sometimes we are changing schedules, other times navigating a challenging situation
with a peer, constructing a path for your post-secondary plans, or sometimes working
through some emotional obstacles with patience and empathy. Our job here is to design
and implement a comprehensive program made up of activities to enhance the learning
process for all students in the academic, personal/social, and career domains. We will
engage in individual counseling, classroom guidance activities, and even school-wide
initiatives to get to know and better serve our students. No matter your goals, we want to
help you get there. Keep your eyes out for various announcements and activities to help
support our efforts. And, whether you need resources or just an ear please don’t hesi-
tate to get in touch with us. We’re looking forward to a great year and can’t wait to part-
ner with all of you!
