Super Inferno Steam HoseISO 9001 and ISO 14001
Over the last 45 years, GOODALL®, the manufacturer, has carried out
research into rubber steam hoses. During this time, it developed a
proprietary, Chlorobutyl steam hose tube compound. GOODALL’S®
Chlorobutyl tube compound continues to demonstrate its superior
performance versus comparable hoses when transferring steam.

Standard steam hose Manufacturer X
Practical tests and test procedures, which
approximate the most extreme applications
for rubber steam hoses, have educated
GOODALL® about the medium of steam
and the ultimate steam hose.
An important consideration when selecting
a tube compound for steam service, is eval-
uating the permeability of the elastomer,
which is a primary function of its individ-
ual chemical structure. Permeability tests
indicate that an EPDM elastomer is about
15 times more permeable to moisture vapor
and other gases than Chlorobutyl. An EPDM
elastomer is more susceptible to microscopic
water and steam particles collecting in the
wall and causing the ’popcorning’ effect.
To minimize permeability, GOODALL®
developed a special Chlorobutyl rubber
compound, which when extruded is
extremely smooth.
The use of rubber steam hoses offers
advantages over the often-used metal
hoses. Stainless Steel metal hoses are not
as robust as rubber steam hoses in dynamic
applications. Extensive tests confirm that
the GOODALL® SUPER INFERNO hose has an
extremely long service life, sometimes more
than four times longer than other hoses.

Risk to the User
Rubber steam hoses, are affected on the
inside by ‘popcorning’. As a result, the
hose poses danger to users in its vicinity.
The affected reinforcements can no longer
withstand the operating pressure, which
causes the hose to develop a problem.
This can result in personal injury and/or
property damage.
Solution to Reduce Risk
Steam is extremely dangerous. You should
therefore choose the safest steam hose
assembly available.
The GOODALL® SUPER INFERNO hose has
been specially developed to provide safe use
when used in combination with any one of
the Campbell crimp on couplings for steam
applications.
All Campbell crimp on couplings for steam
applications comply with the Lewis-Goetz
internal work order instructions. Crimped
steam assemblies eliminate the need for
retightening bolts and cut costs caused by
leaky clamps.

GOODALL® SUPER INFERNO
The GOODALL SUPER INFERNO
distinguishes itself from every other
steam hose on the market.
Its longer service life ensures fewer issues and reduced
downtime. But more importantly it promotes the safe
use of the hose by the user within his/her environment.

The user is advised that Super Inferno is designed to transfer steam only. The use of this hose for any other purpose
without prior approval in writing by Goodall/Lewis-Goetz voids all warranties either expressed or implied. Entire
hose to be inspected by trained personnel prior to each use. If there is any sign of possible damage to the hose or
the couplings, remove hose from service immediately. Refer to industry recommendations, such as RMA IP 11-1, for
proper care and maintenance recommendations for Steam hose. Failure to follow these recommendations could
result in serious personal injury and/or property damage. Use appropriate PPE. Drain hose after each use. Product

Features & Benefits
• Eliminates leaks with hand tightened nut. Hand Tightening also reduces risk for injuries or property damage by eliminating the need for hammers or wrenches to make the connections.
• Interchangeable with old style domestic ground Joints. No need to retrofit stations.
• Viton Seal Couplings pass 1000 hour MIL-H-29210 steam test.
• Viton® seal (formulated by DuPont for high pressure steam and air applications) is protected inside machined stem groove and by swivel nut, extending working life.
• Spud does not contain plastic seat, extending working life.
• Machined hose ends with smooth end-detail to reduce potential failure due to abrasion - grips, seals, and protects hose.
• The Staked-On Ferrule designed specifically for Steam Hose provides the ultimate in holding power.
• Crimped assemblies are low profile and eliminate sharp edges from bolts.
• Machined from carbon steel, cast ductile iron (meets ASTM A395/A536 specifications) and 316 stainless steel. 5

Steam, A Critical Utility
Steam is critical in many operational processes. However, working
with steam is dangerous. Selecting the right hose, couplings, and
installation method is important to be able to work safely with steam.
‘Popcorning’ effect
The service life of steam hose is drastically
reduced when the condensate is not drained
from the hose after use. This condensation
or vapor penetrates the pores of the tube of
the hose and is retained. The next time the
hose is connected to the steam network,
the retained moisture in the tube expands
by a factor of 1600; because of this sudden
increase in volume, air bubbles or blisters,
are created in the tube.
The surface of the tube will resemble pop-
corn. Every time the hose is used, at start-up
the ‘popcorning’ effect is worsened with
particles of rubber exploding from the tube
of the hose. These particles will contaminate
the steam network or the product and block
the system. The moist vapor, which is found
in the rubber of the hose, will also force its
way outwards and degrade and weaken the
steel reinforcements of the hose.
By displaying the combination of operat-
ing pressure and temperature, the steam
diagram shows whether the steam is
saturated or superheated.
Saturated steam can either contain or be
free of un-evaporated water particles and
consequently be either ‘wet’ or ‘dry’.
Every point below the ‘saturated steam’
line represents hot water. Every point
above the line represents superheated
steam. The service life of steam hoses is
shortened every time the hose is exposed
to the superheated steam.
Saturated and, to a certain extent, wet
steam has a ‘lubricating’ effect on the
rubber tube of the hose. However,
superheated and therefore dry steam
slowly hardens the rubber tube due to the
process of vulcanization. This results in a
reduction in the service life of the hose.
Superheated steam can sometimes be
created unintentionally when the valve is
suddenly opened or at a transition from a
small to a much larger diameter pipe.

CARE & MAINTENANCE
Because of the dangers associated with the
use of steam hoses, the reinforcement of
the hose can be affected by steam, which
penetrates through the tube to the outside.
The metal of the reinforcement is affected
within the hose. Testing used hoses
periodically at 500 PSI will reduce such
risks for the user.
We offer retesting to our customers at their
request as part of our hose service program.
We suggest users refer to RMA IP 11-1 for further information.
