Leading Powersports Retailer Influences 30% of Dealership Sales With Retargeting SolutionCHALLENGE

A U.S. based manufacturer and retailer of high-performance motorized vehicles is a market leader

in recreational, utility and military off-road vehicles, snowmobiles and motorcycles. The retailer

expanded their product offering with the purchase of a motorcycle manufacturer and realized a 94%

increase in motorcycle division sales in Q4 2013.

After the expansion of their inventory, the retailer partnered with Rakuten Display to develop a

retargeting strategy that has since expanded to include prospecting and Facebook campaigns.

They initially launched their display program with retargeting to drive leads to their offline franchise

dealerships. This presented a challenge – although retargeting offered the opportunity to drive

conversion online, its influence on offline conversions was difficult to measure. In order to illustrate

the benefits of their investment and to support growth in their franchises, they needed a way to

effectively close the loop between online leads and offline purchases.

SOLUTION

The Rakuten Display account team recommended a comprehensive site retargeting campaign

accompanied by offline attribution reporting. This approach allowed the client to target consumers

who abandoned from any location on their site, including dealership locator and lead forms. The

offline purchase attribution studies would bridge the gap between online ads and in-dealership

sales. These studies take purchase lists from the retailer’s CRM files and tie buyers to their online

profiles. With this connection established, the Rakuten Display data analytics team identified

in-dealership purchases made by consumers who were served an ad online.

RESULTS

The retailer was uncertain of how effective online display marketing would be in driving offline sales.

However, the results of the campaign exceeded the retailer’s expectations, as they found that site

abandoners who returned to their site because of a retargeting ad were 123% more likely to

complete a lead form than visitors from a control group. And, these visitors accounted for a 92%

increase in the offline purchase rate. In fact, the retargeting strategy influenced 30% of in-dealership

revenue during the campaign.
