World's most recognised brand in South Africa From humble beginnings in the 1930s when an American businessman set up a Coca-Cola distribution centre in the country, the South African Bottling Company (Sabco) came about when the first bottling plant was opened in Port Elizabeth in June 1940, as a result of market demand for the drink. Between, 1963 and 1979, the company acquired a number of bottling operations. In the 1980s, time was spent in perfecting the company’s manufacturing process to ensure it consistently produced the perfect Coca-Cola.

Merger with the Kunene family’s Fortune BeveragesIn 2002, Coca-Cola Sabco and Fortune Beverages Limited merged both their South African operations, resulting in the formation of Coca-Cola Fortune. As a result of the merger, the newly formed company’s Port Elizabeth Plant underwent a massive refurbishment project in November 2005, which included the installation of a new high-performance PET bottling line. The second-largest Coca-Cola bottling and distribution company in South Africa, Coca-Cola Fortune today also has other bottling plants in Bloemfontein, Port Shepstone, Polokwane, Nelspruit and Border Kei.

Complete PET bottling line for Bloemfontein ahead of a major tournamentThe company moved to boost production by acquiring a PET line for its plant in Bloemfontein. The aim was to increase output ahead of the expected peak demand during the soccer World Cup hosted by South Africa. Only a few months after the decision, the project turned into a turnkey order for a complete Sidel line (from blow moulding to palletising). As it produces and labels the containers directly in the customer’s plant, the third-party packaging company, Boxmore Plastics International was also involved. Instead of traditional stretch-wrapped packs, the bottles are packaged in special ultralight, returnable, plastic megacrates. For the project Sidel also supplied some particularly interesting end-of-line robots in terms of performance and flexibility: a Robo-Kombi palletiser (weighing in at all of 700 kg payload) and an Incarobot crater. Both machines fully meet the rather complex production requirements for the various pallets and formats handled. Changeovers can even be completely automatic - thanks to the use of up to four gripping heads.
