Centering Station
In this unique application, the Series GRR is used for aligning the wheel.
• The raw cast wheel arrives on a conveyor.• The wheel is then gripped and rotated
about its principle axis to find the correct position. This is done by a vision system.
• The wheel needs to be positioned accurately within 1 mm.
• Finally, the wheel is marked from the inside using a needle marker.
The high repeatability helped the customer with accuracy problems. The low weight and robust design also helped to reduce weight and enhance the life time dramatically.

Finishing/MachiningIn this application, the wheel is loaded and unloaded from CNC machining centers. The robot is moving at a fast rate of speed. With the gripper tooling being approximately 18" from the top of the jaw, the gripper endures major jaw moments during these moves. The environment is very dirty with coolant splash and fine aluminum chips. The GRR provides long life due to PHD’s three shaft design, which provides much higher moment capacity than the competitor's rack and pinion design.

Foundry/Casting CellThe Series GRR can be untilized for handling wheels in the casting cells. The GRR is used to remove the wheel from the oven and place it into the cooling station.

Palletizing/De-Palletizing
Inspection Cell
This complete and simple gripper design is used for palletizing and de-palletizing the wheels varying in size from 14" to 22". This is done between different manufacturing processes (casting, machining, heat treatment), with the wheels stored on pallets.
The wheels are gripped in pairs from the conveyor and placed on pallets and vice versa.
This allows either faster throughput or less palletizing stations to reduce costs.
To accomplish this, the GRRx350 with the longest standard jaw travel is used. Longer jaw travels are available.

This Series SFP Slide is used to lower the inspection device to the wheel while able to hold close tolerance requirements.

Machine Loading/UnloadingThis GRR Gripper is mounted directly to the z-axis of the gantry robot for loading and unloading.
The wheel is machined from one side and turned using PHD’s RID Rotary Actuator and then machined from the other side. This also allows the chips to fall out and all remaining chips are blown out using compressed air.
This solution is cost effective to the customer, since an additional robot/gantry axis is not required.

For this solution, PHD provides the complete tooling and mounting using two GRR 63 x 250 Grippers. Previously, the customer was using a design that needed to be replaced completely in case of failure of certain parts due to crash.

In this heavy duty loading and unloading application, unique three jaw grippers are used. The gripper design incorporates longer jaw travel with synchronized jaw movement. Direct mounting to a robot is possible without the use of transition plates.
