Ahead of the pack Recently we have experienced a great deal of rapid change both within our own business, the local logistics industry and more broadly, with the leadership of the Australian Government.

At Linfox we have made clear decisions about our future leadership, our investment in technology, and how the business remains secure against economic fluctuations.Since the GFC, Linfox has continued to run agile and lean – and we continue to look for ways to remove any of the fat from our operations. This means that we remain in an extremely strong financial position.

Reform agendaAs a member of the Prime Minister’s Business Advisory Council, and coming from a proud Australian business, I believe that now, more than ever, we need to be getting onto the front foot for economic prosperity. In the short-term we need to address the need for taxation reform, including broadening the GST and to provide some relief through personal and corporate tax.We need to have an open discussion about labour market reform to find greater efficiencies and productivity improvements. And while this is not our job, but for our government to address, we need to see investment happening in much needed infrastructure. The Australian Government this month released its delivery plan for the Inland Rail project, connecting rail freight between Melbourne and Brisbane. With an estimated 10-year construction period at $10 billion, these are the investment decisions that need to be made now for the long-term.

New partnershipsAt Linfox we are moving from strength to strength in our partnership with StarTrack, a business of Australia Post, enhancing our role in the delivery of more than 200,000 freight items across Australia each day.We are progressing our work on a recently announced 10-year partnership with DuluxGroup in which we will construct and operate a purpose-built distribution centre in Western Sydney.Linfox in Indonesia is again the supply chain partner of choice for the FMCG sector, securing a significant national logistics agreement with Johnson & Johnson.

Stepping upAt this point in time more than 1,600 people from across our business have signed up to the inaugural Healthy Fox ‘Stepathlon Challenge’. Armed with some creative team names and pedometers our people are walking, jogging, cycling and moving their way to achieving 10,000 steps each day. There could be no better way to celebrate the first anniversary of the Healthy Fox program.

A renewed focus on innovation

We are living in what is arguably one of history’s most interesting times for technological advancement and innovation.

Advances in mobile technology, robotics and 3D printing are just some of the new opportunities we’re presented with. From speaking with our customers we know that innovation, particularly in the areas of process automation and mobile connectivity is a key area of interest. We have listened to this feedback and as part of our 2020 strategy, we have created a central function which will underpin a renewed focus on innovation and future growth for the Linfox business. The new Development, Strategy and Innovation business unit, led by Chris Hemstrom, will work closely with our customers and people to drive meaningful value through innovation and improved customer engagement. You can read more about Chris on page 14. The next generationIn July, I was delighted to join the 2014 Linfox Graduates in Melbourne at a ceremony to mark the end of their 18-month program journey and the start of their exciting new careers.This talented group of young people have the potential to become the future leaders of our business and it is

precisely this reason we invest heavily in our graduate development program. I am pleased to report that earlier this year, Linfox was ranked as a leading graduate employer in the Top 100 Graduate Employers survey.

Disaster response It is an unfortunate reality that extreme weather events are becoming more and more frequent. The New Zealand town of Wanganui experienced its biggest recorded flood in June, leading to road closures, emergency evacuations and power outages across the region.In the case of one customer, 28 out of 40 sites were impacted by road closures and flooding. Many of our team members were also personally impacted.Throughout the disaster, Linfox’s key priority was the wellbeing and safety of its people and the community. Our team achieved zero incidents during the period and completed all scheduled deliveries.These events heighten the importance of effective risk management and business continuity planning. We continue to grow and learn from these events and share our learnings across the business.

Stop for Safety Finally, our sites across Australia and New Zealand recently participated in Stop for Safety activities. The annual campaign, now in its tenth year, is an opportunity for all employees to pause and reflect on safety at work. This year’s theme, Vision ZERO. Now! was a call to action and a pertinent reminder that the decisions we make today will affect our safety and the safety of others.It is a message that will be front of mind as we approach the upcoming peak season.

Supply chain partner of choiceEach and every day, these brands rely on Linfox to warehouse and deliver products into the hands of their customers. It is the success of these relationships that reinforces our reputation as the supply chain partner of choice for the FMCG sector in the Asia Pacific region.I am therefore excited to announce that Linfox has secured a significant national logistics agreement with global healthcare company, Johnson & Johnson in Indonesia. You can read more about this work on page 12. Our partnership with global FMCG giant, Unilever also continues to thrive with the completion of a large-scale warehouse transition in the Chinese city of Tianjin. This new operation is an important addition for Unilever and will significantly strengthen its distribution network in Northern China.

Stop for Safety Our annual Stop for Safety campaign was rolled out to all Linfox sites throughout Asia in July. The campaign, now in its tenth year, calls on employees to stop what they’re doing for an hour to reflect on why safety is important to them. Our teams in Asia work in sometimes challenging conditions. This year’s campaign focused on some of the most common issues our people face in their day-to-day work, including fatigue, motor bike safety and mobile phone use. Working together to create and maintain a culture of strong leadership, teamwork and individual accountability is what’s required to make safety a part of every decision made, every day by everybody.

Strengthening regional ties We recently completed our first financial year following the establishment of our regional headquarters in Bangkok. Highlights of the year include the commencement of national supply chain operations for SAB Miller in India, a new partnership with Kellogg’s at its ‘snacks hub’ investment in Malaysia and the expansion of our work with Unilever in China and India. I look forward to continuing these successful partnerships and playing a vital role in their supply chain operations in the years to come.

10 year safety journeyLinfox celebrated another milestone in its safety journey with the completion of the tenth ‘Stop for Safety’ campaign in August.

The annual campaign is a key initiative of Linfox’s Vision ZERO safety strategy, which has led to a significant improvement in all safety measures since its inception in 2006. During the campaign, employees across Asia Pacific stop work for one hour to participate in activities, watch the latest safety message and discuss ways to improve workplace safety. In many cases, customers and contractors participate in activities. This year’s theme, Vision ZERO. Now! was a call to action and a reminder that the decisions made today will affect our safety and the safety of others. Mental health awareness was a key focus for this year’s discussions. Group Manager Safety and Sustainability, Andrew Niven said: “Research tells us that at any given time, around one in five of us are likely to be experiencing a mental health condition.”

“It’s therefore essential to encourage open dialogue around mental health and to create an environment where people feel they can ask for help.”Drug and alcohol awareness and reducing the impact of distractions, such as mobile phones were also key campaign themes.

“The feedback from sites has been encouraging and we’ve received a remarkable 100 per cent participation rate across all our Asia Pacific sites,” said Andrew.

New partnership boosts StarTrack network

Linfox is partnering with StarTrack, a business of Australia Post, to provide linehaul services for its trusted delivery network.

The new partnership offers improved visibility and reliability for StarTrack’s Express service, which delivers more than 200,000 freight items across Australia each day.

As Australia’s most integrated freight service provider, StarTrack provides a range of parcel, freight, express, courier and international solutions for the business and consumer markets. Linfox is well positioned to service StarTrack into the future as it benefits from continuing growth in the e-commerce sector. According to the National Australia Bank’s online retail sales index, Australia’s online retail spending increased to $16.9 billion for the year to April 2015, or 9.6 per cent annually.

Reliability and visibility

Linfox runs more than 200 interstate legs each week for StarTrack, operating nightly freight services between Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.“Linfox has a presence at the key StarTrack sites we service. This close customer relationship means we’re constantly exchanging arrival and departure information,” said Linehaul Specialist Network Manager, Paul Wilken. “We monitor vehicle locations and road conditions via our central control room to provide live location updates and mitigate any delays.“This level of communication ensures StarTrack can better service the expectations of their customers.”

New fleet Linfox has introduced 32 new Volvo Euro 5 prime movers to its fleet for StarTrack. “The Euro 5 Volvo is a popular choice for linehaul routes, providing reliability, fuel efficiency and excellent safety features,” said Paul.“The vehicles also offer maximum environmental efficiency which reflects our commitment to reducing environmental emissions across our fleet.”

StarTrack shares Linfox’s commitment to safety and this was a key factor in securing the work. “Through our Vision Zero program, Linehaul delivers a strong suite of programs designed to keep safety front of mind,” said Paul. “We empower our people to stop, think and plan to ensure their own safety and the safety of those around them.”

Game onIconic US toy and board game company, Hasbro has appointed Linfox to manage its warehousing operations in Australia.

Hasbro is one of the world’s largest toy makers, responsible for a range of popular toys and board games including Monopoly, Littlest Pet Shop, My Little Pony, Nerf, Transformers and Play-Doh.

Loved by kids and big-kids alike, Hasbro products are stocked by many Australian retailers including Target, Kmart and Big W. FMCG General Manager, Mike Sullivan said Hasbro inventory will be managed out of Linfox’s multi-user warehouse in Erskine Park, New South Wales.

“The site offers state-of-the-art technology, including our SAP Warehouse Management system which provides customers with improved resource and inventory management and greater visibility of stock,” said Mike. “A team of 10 Linfox employees will work closely with Hasbro to provide product receipting, wharf administration and de-stuffing services.” The Erskine Park multi-user site services four key customers, keen to benefit from the economies of scale offered at the facility. “Linfox matches labour, equipment and storage space to our customer’s individual needs, allowing us to optimise our resources and provide a highly cost efficient service,” said Mike.

Successful Unilever transition Linfox has completed a successful warehouse transition for Unilever in Tianjin, China.

The new 40,000m2 distribution centre will strengthen Unilever’s distribution network throughout Northern China. Acting China Country Manager, Ping Lim said the impressive site comprises of two separate buildings, catering for Unilever’s diverse product lines.“The first area contains around 28,000 pallet positions and is specifically designed for home and personal care products while a second smaller area will safely house food products,” said Ping.

“The distribution centre features leading technology, including Linfox’s SAP warehouse management system and draws on our expertise in warehouse and systems design.” Unilever produces more than 400 leading health and wellbeing brands, including soaps, shampoos and household care products. Linfox partners with Unilever in six countries across the Asia Pacific region.

Linfox secures 10 year agreement with DuluxGroup

The new DC will be located in the Marsden Park Industrial Precinct, located around 40 kilometres north-west of Sydney.

Linfox currently provides local transport for DuluxGroup in Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and New South Wales as well as warehousing in Victoria.Linfox Property Group Managing Director, Andrew Fox said the facility will be built, owned and operated by Linfox, to DuluxGroup’s specifications.“The new DC will feature state-of-the-art facilities and create dozens of local construction jobs,” said Andrew.“The Linfox Property and Logistics businesses successfully collaborated to secure this new work and further strengthen our partnership with DuluxGroup.”

Linfox has entered into a 10 year agreement with DuluxGroup, incorporating warehouse operations and the construction of a purpose-built distribution centre in western Sydney.

DuluxGroup Managing Director Patrick Houlihan said significant growth of the Dulux and Selleys brands is driving the investment. “The new Linfox owned and operated Sydney DC will allow us to maintain and further improve our customer service levels in a cost and capital effective way, catering for the ongoing growth in our Selleys and Dulux businesses,” said Patrick.

Warehousing expertise

Linfox Logistics will operate the distribution centre upon its completion. The DC will be home to DuluxGroup’s popular range of paints and home improvement products.Resources and Industrial National Manager, Vince Stoffels said Linfox’s strong relationship with Dulux in Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia helped to secure the new business.

“Linfox has successfully managed Dulux’s 12,000m2 warehouse in Dandenong, Victoria for more than 10 years,” said Vince. “Our proven expertise in warehousing and the management and handling of dangerous goods has been instrumental to growing our partnership.”

The partnership incorporates the transition into Linfox’s multiuser warehouses in Jakarta and Surabaya in East Java as well as distribution across the archipelago.“Linfox will use a dynamic pick face, allowing the flexibility to rotate product positioning based on demand,” said Mike.

“New measures to improve inventory accuracy and processes are also being introduced as we undertake a comprehensive review of J&J’s SAP applications.”The Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies is the world’s most broadly based global health care business serving customers, patients and medical professionals through more than 275 companies in over 60 countries.

This was true for the Linfox New Zealand team when they faced three days of severe flooding and weather conditions in June. The town of Wanganui in New Zealand’s North Island experienced its biggest recorded flood, leading to road closures, emergency evacuations and power outages across the region.“In the case of one customer, 28 out of 40 sites were impacted by road closures and flooding,” said New Zealand Country Manager, James Watters. “Some team members were also personally affected, suffering property damage or being effectively stranded in their homes due to road closures.”Throughout the disaster, Linfox’s key priority was the wellbeing and safety of its people and the community.

“The team remained safe and achieved zero incidents in the period,” said James.“The events were a true test of our ability to respond to unforseen incidents and pull together as a team.” Emergency response NZ Retail Manager Duncan McGrory said the team showed passion, resilience and dedication to work together and minimise the impact on the customer. “Regular crisis meetings were held during the floods to update our people and the customer on the situation as it unfolded and the subsequent impact on deliveries,” said Duncan. “We also relied heavily on our technology to provide real-time data updates, traffic and weather warnings to inform our response.”

Linfox maintains a pool of drivers who work across our network and are trained to meet Linfox’s safety and operating standards.“Additional drivers were able to step in to assist with overflow work. These resources were critical to our recovery efforts,” said Duncan.“Despite the challenges and extreme weather, the team coordinated and completed all scheduled deliveries.”

In the coming months, Linfox will release a new strategy to drive growth towards 2020 and beyond. Ahead of this release, the business has announced the creation of the Development, Strategy and Innovation business unit. I am pleased to be leading this new unit which will underpin a renewed focus on innovation and future growth for the Linfox business. Our team has three strategic drivers: identifying opportunities for growth, fostering innovation and increasing customer engagement.

Driving growth Linfox has enjoyed strong growth over the last 10 years.To continue this success, we’re seeking to further diversify our services and identify new markets where our business can thrive. This means building on our trusted core services and customising our offering to new and emerging markets where we can add value. We’re already achieving this in several areas of the business, such as Linfox Healthcare which provides specialist services for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. More recently, we licensed the intellectual property for our SAP-based Linfox Warehouse Management System to one of our largest customers. Incorporating Linfox’s best practice in warehouse management, the system can be tailored to meet customer needs across a broad range of industries.

Creating a culture of innovation Innovation exists at Linfox in many forms and we’re fortunate to have many creative thinkers and skilled problem solvers in our business. Like any business function, innovation is a process that must be managed and continuously advanced. Our role is to develop a structure around innovation that guides it, from understanding customer needs to idea creation, through to implementation.We also aim to substantially extend our culture of innovation, ensuring it is one that fosters creativity and supports our people as they bring their ideas to reality.

Chris Hemstrom profileChris leads the Development, Strategy and Innovation (DSI) business unit to drive Linfox’s growth strategy and identify opportunities for innovation across the business.

Prior to his appointment as President DSI, Chris was Linfox’s Group Manager Supply Chain Solutions, responsible for developing and identifying new operating efficiencies.Chris brings more than 20 years’ experience providing development and strategy advice to the logistics and supply chain sectors. He has a PhD in Operations Strategy from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management, a Masters of Arts (Business Research) from Macquarie University and an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management.

Improving the customer experience through innovation is an area where we can develop and deliver more value to these relationships. Innovation starts with a deep understanding of our customers and their strategic drivers and challenges. Mark Whitworth appointment Mark Whitworth was appointed General Counsel and Company Secretary of Linfox Logistics Australia and New Zealand in June.

Mark is responsible for providing legal advice to the Linfox Board, CEO and business functions across Australia and New Zealand. In his capacity as Company Secretary, he provides guidance on financial, compliance and governance matters for the Linfox Board and the business in general.

After completing Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Laws degrees at the University of Melbourne, he began his legal career at Gadens Lawyers where he provided legal advice on a broad range of commercial, insurance, corporate risk, property development and construction matters. He joined Linfox in 2007 as a Corporate Lawyer and later moved into an Associate Lawyer role. In 2012, Mark was appointed Legal and Commercial Manager for the Resources and Industrial business unit, contributing to the unit’s strategic direction and providing legal and commercial advice. Most recently he held the position of Group Manager - Finance and Operations, reporting to the CFO and responsible for a variety of commercial functions in Australia and New Zealand. Announcing Mark’s appointment, CEO Australia and New Zealand, Annette Carey said: “It is pleasing that an internal candidate has been appointed to the role.”“Mark brings strong legal expertise and a solid understanding of business operations and commercial drivers to his new role.”Mark is married with three children. He has been a volunteer surf lifesaver in Victoria for many years and enjoys travelling and skiing.

Vehicles displaying the Linfox Indigenous logo took to the road in July. In an industry first, the vehicles also display an acknowledgement to the traditional custodians of the land over which they travel.

Linfox has created more than 200 jobs for Indigenous Australians in the last five years. Indigenous Engagement Manager, Seona James said: “The Linfox Indigenous Strategy aims to create meaningful and sustainable jobs for Indigenous employees through cultural awareness, and business and community engagement.”

“Indigenous Australians joining Linfox are supported with tailored training and mentoring programs.“The new livery publicly promotes our commitment to the strategy and our wider goal of closing the employment gap for Indigenous Australians.”

Closing the Indigenous employment gapLinfox has introduced new vehicle livery to represent its commitment to closing the employment gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The Indigenous Engagement logo has dual meanings: the dotted pathways represent Linfox’s extensive logistics network and the yellow wheel depicts the momentum Linfox will generate by creating employment avenues for Indigenous Australians. Paula Fox recognised for philanthropic workPaula Fox, the wife of Linfox Founder Lindsay Fox, was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday honours list for her philanthropic work.

Paula is trustee of the Fox Family Foundation, which manages the charitable donations of the Linfox business.The Foundation contributes to a range of arts, cultural, youth, research and social welfare organisations.

“I’ve focused much of my energy to help improve outcomes for children and families, such as supporting housing and accommodation projects and further encouraging the critical work in medical research,” Paula said. “It’s a wonderful honour to be acknowledged for pursuing something that is close to my heart and for being able to make a contribution in this way to our community.”

The next generationLaszlo Bruzsa is the 2014 Linfox Graduate of the Year.

The Graduate of the Year award recognises an individual graduate who has displayed exceptional character, strong teamwork, performance and growth.Speaking at the Graduate Ceremony in Melbourne, Linfox Chairman Peter Fox said Laszlo achieved the award in recognition of his outstanding work ethic, flexibility and willingness to take on a range of tasks.“Laszlo is a natural leader with qualities and abilities beyond his years,” said Peter.“This award recognises the exceptional young talent that Linfox is investing in as our business continues to expand.”

Laszlo joined Linfox in February 2014 after completing a Bachelor of Business at the Queensland University of Technology. Twenty-seven other 2014 graduates received their completion certificates at the ceremony. The Linfox Graduate Program is among the top 100 graduate programs in Australia.
