STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING

Tiffany E. Strange, CP APMP

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Good morning, everyone. I’m Tiffany Strange, and today we are going to talk about Strategic Career Planning.
Page 5: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

How did you get into that line of work?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
I’ve been asked this question so many times… and my answer is always, “Well, it just sort of happened.” Many of us didn't plan to be in this profession... Yet here we are. But, that doesn't mean we can't be deliberate about where we go from here.

Strategic planning• Be proactive• Set time aside• Pre-write your resume• Define your pathway• Build your plan

7

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Taking time to think about your career development is never urgent, so many of us fail to take action, but BE PROACTIVE. Make time for strategic reflection. Going months or years without it can lead you down a professional path that you didn’t intend to be on. But, getting clarity around your professional goals is only the first step. Many of us don’t take the time to identify a clear pathway to get from here to there. That’s why pre-writing your resume is such a useful tool. The idea is to put yourself X years in the future and write your resume as you envision it, including your new job title and responsibilities. The trick is that you also have to fill in the intervening years, which prompts you to reflect on: what skills you’ll need to develop what degrees or accreditations you may need to earn, and what promotional path you’ll need to pursue in order to get there. Understanding that helps force your strategic thinking and ensures that you’re taking the right steps.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
For this mini-workshop we will examine our career paths through the lens of one of my favorite tools, the SWOT Analysis. It’s a great tool to identify key elements of your pathway and can be used to reassess your situation along the way.
Page 9: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Strengths• Nurture your core skillset• Embrace discriminators• Resources available

9

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Capitalize on your strengths… This piece typically comes the easiest to us. For this portion of the workshop, we will discuss our core capabilities and look for ways to differentiate ourselves. We will also take inventory of all of the resources we have available to us so we can leverage them to our advantage.
Page 10: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Weaknesses

• Gap analysis• Desired skills• Road blocks

10

Successful people are just normal people who are prepared to do the uncomfortable things that most people won't do.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Next, we will take a long, hard look at what gaps we need to fill to reach our end goal. You don’t to be an expert at everything. This is about being strategic in how you address the specific weaknesses that could block you from realizing your goals. We will examine: Our knowledge gaps Valuable qualities or skills we wish we had Potential obstacles or road blocks
Page 11: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Opportunities• Plan ahead• Peer weaknesses• Fill a void

11

It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Then, we will identify some potential opportunities to capitalize on, including: Planning ahead to get a leg up right now Identifying knowledge or capability gaps among your peers, and Capitalizing on the chance to fill a void within your organization or elsewhere Opportunities are not always glamorous, but stepping up could pay dividends.
Page 12: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Threats• Study successful peers• Seek inspiration• Cues from leadership• Pay attention

12

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Lastly, we will look at threats to anticipate and mitigate… What features have made others in your desired career path successful? What skills do those who inspire you have? What traits are valued by your leadership?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Strategic career development doesn’t mean you have to be great at everything. But if you strategically expand your expertise based on your own strengths and weaknesses and the ever changing world around you, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goals.

Professional development potpourri

• The four stages

• Let’s talk!

15

It’s time to decide that it IS Day One –…………. and not One Day!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Thanks so much Tiffany. For my part, we constantly hear how important it is to become certified, accredited, get degreed. As a quick overview we’ll look at four stages of our career/professional development and as it happens – ties perfectly with APMP certification! For the moment, let’s quickly look at those stages and then look more closely at your personal experiences and how training and education has played a role.
Page 16: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Stage one• Motivators at the foundational stage include

– Understanding the organization's structure, function, and culture

– Attaining base-level technical skills– Giving relevancy to previous training– Exercising directed creativity and initiative– Moving from dependency to independence– Exploring personal/professional dynamics; and – Building relationships with professional peers

FOUNDATION1

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You’re just starting a new job within the industry You do not intend to stay at this level. However, there is – for a time - psychological dependency Understanding organizational structure, function, culture Has prior training provided a springboard? What was that training? Opportunity for creativity and initiative? Move from dependency to independence Personal/professional dynamics Building relationships with peers
Page 17: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Stage two• Motivators for development

– Developing an area of expertise– Becoming an independent contributor in problem

solving– Developing a professional identity– Gaining membership in professional community– Expanding creativity and innovation– Moving from independence to interdependency

PRACTITIONER2

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This stage can be a level at which some will find satisfaction and find their niche. Some opportunity for growth and expertise. Acceptance as members of the community; solid practitioners within the community. Use of skills to solve problems and bring new ideas. Some people never need to move beyond this level Has usually built at least one area of expertise and often shares that on committees and through other special assignments.
Page 18: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Stage three• Motivators are

– Acquiring broad-based expertise– Attaining leadership positions– Developing networks with others – Stimulating thought in others– Counseling other professionals– Developing coaching and mentoring relationships– Facilitating your continuing growth and development

PROFESSIONAL3

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Professionals who have reached this stage are ready to take on responsibility, either formal or informal, for developing others. At the same time, don’t neglect personal growth and development. To accommodate personal development needs, Stage Three professionals often look to develop other areas of expertise beyond those they currently have. They often chair committees or take on leadership roles in professional associations. Rather than being independent contributors they understand the need for an interdependent role and accomplish much of their work through and with others. They are boundary-spanners and often have extensive networks both within and outside the organization or industry.
Page 19: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Stage four• Motivators to becoming an integral part of improving

the industry through best practices are – Being involved in strategic planning within

industry or having a platform to provide a voice– Having achieved respect of others– Engaging in innovative thinking– Understanding complex relationships of

differing aspects within our industry– Mentoring individuals– Recognizing evolution of industry and working toward professionalism

FELLOWS DESIGNATION4

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Individuals at this point play a key role in shaping the future of the industry Providing mentorship, guidance and a “listening ear” to promising people Always pen to new processes and ideas This advisor has often developed a distinct competence in several areas of expertise and often has a well-known and respected reputation. They have a thorough understanding of industry and can be a catalyst for positive change.

Interactive participation• Personal and professional development

– How has that factored in your career– Played a positive role?– No impact?

• Certification through the levels• Other certifications

– Within the industry or adjunct– Personal

• Future

Presentation Notes
We’ll talk about how your personal and professional development has played out during your career. How have the diplomas, certifications, accreditations served you. Have academic achievements or training in other areas been relevant or applicable to now? How can they be used to your advantage as you continue to build your area – or areas – of expertise and passion. Let’s talk! We know we’ve found “our people.” Share your experiences.

Objectives• Identify essential elements of the process • Data collection techniques used to capture

feedback• Methods used to categorize and

disseminate findings

22

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Here are the objectives of today’s workshop.
Page 23: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Definition*• Concise descriptions of knowledge derived from

experiences that can be communicated through mechanisms, such as storytelling and debriefing, or summarized as databases.

• These lessons often reflect on– What we did right– What we would do differently– How we could improve our process and/or

product to be more effective in the future

Presentation Notes
Any discussion of Lessons Learned requires an understanding of what it is. Here is APMP’s official definition. Full Disclosure: I am one of the co-author’s of the Glossary of Terms.
Page 24: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Best practices• Critical review step(s) in BD process

– Post submission (internal feedback)– After contract award/customer debrief

• Designated owner responsible for ensuring process improvements routinely implemented and institutionalized within organization

• Established lessons learned database/repository• Document, manage, track, and report on action items to

resolution to ensure that BD process improvements are traceable and actually incorporated– Key factor in executing a seamless transition plan

24

Presenter
Presentation Notes
One of the critical steps in the overall BD process ID someone to own the improvements and see that they get implemented Get lessons learned in a central location to build upon and assess trends Carry out actions needed to ensure implementation and continuous improvement
Page 25: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Alternatives

• Action replay

• Rationale reconstruction

• Win/loss interview

25

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Lessons Learned can take many forms and be called different things depending on your culture.
Page 26: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Must-haves to ensure maximum value

• Non-wins (losses) should be interviewed• Select an impartial interviewer• Ask off-the-template questions • Analyze your loss interviews

to assess trends

26

…and determine implications and action plans

Presenter
Presentation Notes
If you subscribe to the Win-Loss format, you might want to consider these must-haves for your expectations to be met.
Page 27: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Eliciting constructive feedback• Gaining insight after customer debrief

– Did what we learn apply to all customers or just this one?– Did we misinterpret what the customer wanted?

• Improving proposal process effectiveness– How could the mistake in the delivery have been prevented? – What can we do in the future to prevent this error from happening again?

• Evaluating process documentation issues– If we make this improvement, how does it affect the team’s R&R? – What else can we do to mitigate this issue?

• Evaluating proposal software issues– Were reviewers new to the system able to use it to its full potential? – Was sufficient technical support available when needed?

27

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Workshop Exercise: Getting the Most from Lessons Learned Handout will be provided for this section of the mini-workshop : In your groups… Assign a writer to summarize thoughts Assign a spokesperson Come up with 2-3 questions in each category that you/your company needs the answers to…. Samples provided to get started….
Page 28: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Applying lessons learned• Allows for more open discussions about what

worked and what could be improved• Clearly documents details of the issue and

how it was resolved for future benefit• Ensures you can find documentation you

need to review when you need it • Protects identity of survey participant to get

honest and open feedback

…That’s a wrap!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
You must do something with what you find out. Issues should turn into action items that lead to future enhancements or improvements. Documenting previous lessons learned is vital to knowledge transfer and future success if similar incidents are encountered. This is not a witch hunt or an opportunity to place blame on any particular party or individual.
Page 29: SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90...2017/06/13  · SOLVE YOUR PROBLEMS IN 90 MINUTES: STRATEGIC CAREER PLANNING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, LESSONS LEARNED, AND HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Tiffany

Top takeaways• Ex. “Holding a lessons-learned session

after a proposal has been submitted is a good idea, but only if it results in change.”

• “…issues should turn into action items that lead to improvements on future proposals.”

29 Sharing what you learned…

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Much like a meeting, you wouldn’t hold one unless you had an agenda with anticipated action items/outcomes.

Most of us are in an eternal search for work/life balance. For me, an integral part of work/life balance is personal health and well-being. For the next 30 minutes, we’re going to discuss some major components of what goes into personal health and well-being and share (as we’re comfortable sharing): What we’re doing currently in these areas Suggestions for realistic improvements And what next steps we’d each like to take personally to make some adjustments or improvements in those areas.

How many of us make New Year’s resolutions to exercise more, improve our diet, sleep more, get fit, etc., etc., etc.? Raise your hands! How many of us feel that we’re usually “less than successful“ at keeping those resolutions – for whatever reasons? (Raise my hand high!) Let’s talk about each of the four areas – exercise, diet, sleep, and sitting – and share some “practical – I can really do these” ideas with each other.

I find it easy to get overwhelmed by all of the areas where I need to start making or continue making improvements for my health and well-being. In fact, I’ve hit some points over the past few years when I’d been sick for a long time, fell out of my good habits, saw the numbers going up on the scale again after I worked so very hard to get them down, felt my endurance completely tank, and had the desire but not the motivation to get on the right track again. I went back to my 2015 APMP Ignite talk, looked at where I had been, where I had gotten to, and what I did to get there – and I made the decision to get going again, start working on my diet, roll my self out of bed in the morning to exercise, get back into my health sleep patterns, and stop sitting without getting up for 10 hours a day. I’m making progress – and again, my goal was not to become a super model or super athlete, but to get myself healthy again for the second half of my life!
