Solving Inequalities
Solving an Inequality is just like solving an equation,
almost….
Instead of an equal sign there is an inequality sign.
If you multiply or divide by a negative number, you must flip the inequality sign.
There is more than one number that is a part of the solution
.
NotationNotation
We will begin by reminding ourselves of formal mathematical notation and the properties of inequalities.
Greater than > Ex: 12 > 6 Greater than or equal to > Ex: 17 > 16 Less than < Ex: 9 < 13 Less than or equal to < Ex: -15 < 15
ExamplesExamples
1. x + 5 < 6
2. x + 4 > 7
3. x + 2 < 0
1. X – 4 > -1
2. X – 5 ≤ 10
3. X – 8 ≥ 6
ExamplesExamples
1. 2x > 4
2. -4x < -12
3. 6x ≤ 24
1. x/2 > 4
2. x/5 < -10
3. -x/3 ≥ 4
