Our mission at First Presbyterian Church of the Covenant is: “To awaken all people to our need for a life-changing encounter

with the living Lord Jesus Christ, and to encourage and equip each one to become His fully-devoted follower.”

F r o m P a s t o r C h r i s

“This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.” Western Union internal memo dated 1876.

“I do not believe the introduction of motor-cars will ever affect the riding of horses” Mr. Scott-Montague, MP, in the United Kingdom in 1903.

“The wireless music box has no imaginable commercial value. Who would pay for a message sent to nobody in particular?” David Sarnoff’s Associates rejecting a proposal for investment in the radio in the 1920s.

“Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?” H.M. Warner (Warner Brothers) before rejecting a proposal for movies with sound in 1927.

“The concept is interesting and well-formed, but in order to earn better than a ‘C,’ the idea must be feasi-ble.” A Yale university professor in response to Fred Smith’s paper proposing reliable overnight delivery service. Smith went on to found Federal Express.

“There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” Ken Olsen (President, Chairman, and founder of Digital Equipment Corp) in 1977.

“So we went to Atari and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we’ll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we’ll come work for you.’ And they said, ‘No.’ So then we went to Hewlett-Packard, and they said, ‘Hey we don’t need you. You haven’t got through college yet.” Apple Computer Inc. founder Steve Jobs on attempts to get Atari and HP interested in his and Steve Wozniak’s personal computer.

We may laugh at some of those responses and ask, “how could reasonable, intelligent people be so short-sighted?” We all know the saying that hindsight is 20/20. It is easier to look into the past than it is into the future.

Reading the book of Acts it is amazing to see the transformation the disciples went through after they encountered the resurrected Jesus. They went from hiding in the upper room for fear of the Jews to pro-claiming Jesus as the Messiah. They seem to have no fear. They healed and proclaimed good news. They gathered and sold their belongings and gave the money to the poor. These followers of Jesus became amazing and daring risk-takers.

Reflecting on the dramatic, inside-out transformation Jesus works in us, the Apostle Paul writes, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person, The old life is gone, a new life has be-gun.”

If we are new creations in Christ, then we need to live as though we are. All too often the church has been fairly criticized for precisely the same sort of thinking that once condemned the automobile and per-sonal computer. Our calling and our challenge is to reach out in ministry in new ways. To try serve the Lord by not simply relying on what we are comfortable or used to doing. May we as a church be amazing and daring risk-takers.

The Communion Table will be set by God for you on...

Sunday, May 6th.

“Wholly Fit” Wellness Program

The Deacons, in conjunction with students from the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Gannon University, recently conducted the “wholly fit” well-ness program for members of our congregation. The program recognized the need to promote and encour-age living a healthy lifestyle. The curriculum included: home-based exercise and walking; dancing and endur-ance; yoga and flexibility; brain games, stress manage-ment and functional balance; and nutrition.

The seven-week program ran from March 8 ~ April 19, 2018. Thanks to Gannon students: Jennifer Gravatt,

Victoria Lavery, Kaitlynn Mostard-Smith, Kelly Parsons, Brenna Powers, Nicholas Stephenson, and David Ways for helping to make us more “wholly fit!”

Music Appreciation Sunday is May 6th this year. Join us as we celebrate the role that music plays in our worship with an intergenerational anthem, both rung and sung! There will be an opportunity to recog-nize our musicians during the fellowship time following the 11 am service.

Children & Youth Sunday: The children and youth will lead us in both the 8:30 and 11 am services on Pentecost, May 20th. They will sing, ring, and lead us in welcoming the Holy Spirit! Join us to experience the unique gifts that God has blessed them with as they guide us through this special service of worship that they helped to develop themselves!

Join us! Come and share your gifts with us! Music for kids and youth is on Sundays, with age 4 through 5th grade meeting from 9:30 am-10:30 am and Greater than the Sum, grade 6-12, from the end of the 11 am service until 1 pm. The last week for children’s music is May 20th and Greater than the Sum’s last meeting will be after the 11 am service on May 6th. Adults meet on Thursdays at 6:30 for bells, last rehearsal May 3rd and 7:15 for the Singing choir, last rehearsal May 17th.

Missional Music Opportunity: We have been using music to welcome our Sunday Suppers guests. If you are interested in sharing your gifts during these times, whether it be vocal or instrumental, one song or a set of music, a solo or group, please contact Monty Service at [email protected]

PLARN UPDATE FOR MATS & NECK ROLLS

This is a small note but a huge Thank You to all who worked on The Plarn Project. Because of you we met our goals of 45~50 mats and too many neck rolls to count. What an absolutely rewarding project this was and continues to be. I only wish you could have all wit-nessed the men and women using the mats and neck rolls. They were and are in high de-mand. I will try to include some pictures of them in use.

Interesting developments occurred throughout Our Neighbors Place. Many found comfort in using the mats as a mini mattress on their cots. It gave them just the right amount of cushion to help with their sleep after a long stressful day for them. The neck rolls were so appreciated as pillows and a prop to read and relax. Also, the pillow cases added to their comfort.

We received help from over 30 volunteers, plus the entire congregation, preschool children and The Kirk House at FPCC. I did learn that when this congregation is given a mission they step up to the plate of suc-cess. A shout out to The Refuge and Springhill who joined us in this venture. I hope I did not miss anyone. Believe me if I did it was certainly not intentional.

The good news is if you care to continue making mats and neck rolls we will gladly accept them as we will use all that are donated. However, we at FPCC will not be meeting as a group. We will no longer be accepting bags either. Thank you for the love you have demonstrated to our guest at Our Neighbors Place.

If you have any questions give me a call at 450-8468 or at [email protected]. God is Good! ~ Julie R. Copen

“House of Renewal”

Habitat for Humanity of Erie is planning a “rehab” instead of “new construction” for this summer’s Faith Build. Church members can learn valuable remodeling skills and when the home is finished, a family will have a beautiful home! Watch for details for the June 5-23 Faith Build.

NEW – You can work a half-day shift: 7:45 a.m.-noon on Tues, Wed, Thurs. during the build and 7:45 a.m.-noon PLUS noon-4:30 p.m. on Saturdays (NO Fridays, Sundays, Mon-days). First Covenant’s Habitat Coordinator Tim Tracy will have details and shifts for us to serve later this month. Also new this year — First Covenant will provide childcare (ages 4-

10) for volunteers on Saturday morning, June 16th.

Have a group that wants to work together? Have questions? Contact Tim at [email protected] or 814-864-6118. God will use churches from across Erie to transform a “fixer-upper” into a comfortable home for one of our neighbors—be a part of it! Remember no skills needed, just a Servant’s Heart.

And baby makes three...

Every good & perfect gift is from above - James 1:17

Please join us as we celebrate "Baby Knight's Arrival"

A baby shower for Zac & Britney Knight will be held on Sunday, May 27th in the Parlor,

The preschool year is coming to a close...soon the halls on the second floor will be quiet for a few months and the children will be outside enjoying the beautiful weather in Erie.

Once again, the preschool participated on April 14th at the Gannon University Day of Caring, special "Thanks" to Covenant Preschool Governing Board President, Rick Skrbin, who once again helped to coordinate the college students and preschool volunteers in fix-ing up the playground and parking lots by purchasing mulch for the preschool and neigh-borhood children that utilize the playground every day.

The preschool is currently enrolling for the 2018-2019 school year. Covenant Preschool is the oldest ex-isting, continuously operating preschool in Erie County. There are two teachers in each class and classes have limited numbers to optimize individual care. All lead teachers are certified. By enrolling at Covenant Preschool, your child would have the opportunity to participate in the many mission projects within FPCC, class field trips, visits from the Erie zoo and many other fun opportunities. We are proud of our sixty-eight-year history, and we know it proves that we are doing something right! We would love for you to become a part of our “Covenant Preschool Family". If you are interested in a tour of the preschool please contact the office, visit our website, or follow us on face book.

The 5th Annual Covenant Preschool Kids Duathlon was held on April 29th this year at Harbor Creek community Center. The Kids Duathlon is the first of its kind in the Erie area. The Duath-lon consists of a timed bike and relay course. The competition is open for children 12 and un-der. Tricycles and strollers are welcome!

~ Lisa Hiegel, Preschool Director

When you arrive for worship or other gatherings at the church you will probably encounter one of the following people. This team is charged with greeting visitors, answering questions, answering the phone and securing the church building.

Have you met any of these "hosts"? Please introduce yourself if you have not. Here is a little bit of information about each.

Ian Headley is a church member and student at Gannon University. He previously served as a wedding custodian for First Covenant and recently joined a fraternity.

Nsanbeh (Danté) Epizitone is studying for his Master's of Public Administration at Gannon. He was born in Cameroon, has a passion for reading and poetry, and works also at Pineapple Eddie's Restaurant on weekend evenings.

Mary Schmidt is a neighbor of the church and works during the day at the Multicultural Community Re-source Center. It is rumored she makes a delicious homemade fruit cake from an old family recipe.

Seth Hiegel is a Mercyhurst senior and the son of Covenant Preschool Director Lisa Hiegel. He has served as host for a couple of years and will finish his time with us in May. He will soon make a trip to Aus-tralia!

Sunday, April 15, the Kirk House hosted an ‘Agape’ dinner where 15 students who do not live in the house were invited to join for a time of food, conversation, laughter and relationship building. The house is continuing to press into this idea of hospitality, caring for the stranger and this was a beautiful example of it. This again is continued evidence of Gods work and the relationships being built!

"Thank you for the space and making the event even more special!" "Thank you for your constant generosity :)" "Thank you for sharing your beautiful church for this special event!" These were notes contained in a thank you card received from

the sisters of Gannon's Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority.

On a Sunday afternoon last month, AST held a Mother-Daughter tea in the Parlor attended by 25 students and 25 moms. This is the same sorority that consistently shows up with boxes and bags of snacks to share with their peers during each finals StudySpace. Last year the group also held a gathering in the Parlor. These women are all about collaboration. Many of them have al-so joined us in worship, helped with the winter shelter or served at Sunday Sup-pers. This is continued evidence of Gods work and the relationships being built!

Covenant Kitchen / International Kitchen!

Gannon students and staff from 5 countries (South Korea, USA, Cameroon, Iraq and Romania) had a long day of cooking in the Knox Hall kitch-en on April 7. This was in preparation for Gan-non's annual International Night attended by hun-dreds from across Erie. As students and staff cooked, another student from Saudi Arabia re-hearsed his singing on the Knox stage.

Carol Knoble, Director of Gannon's Office of Global Support and Student Engagement shared this note of thanks with the church: "Thank you, First Covenant, for all of your assistance and support with International Night. Your generosity is such a gift to us and is appre-ciated tremendously. We are fortunate to have you as a neighbor and a friend. So much of the 'fun' of Interna-tional Night are the intangible things that go on behind the scenes that go unnoticed by most people. We have had lots of compliments and you deserve some of the credit for the success of the event. Thank you!"

Gannon Sorori-TEA

25 people ate, laughed & experienced the presence of God together.

Together with campus ministers Kyle Schumacher and Abby Blankenship, they mulched the play-ground, raked and swept up winter debris around the church/around the neigh-borhood AND even patched parking lot potholes! A doughnut break was provid-

ed by Marlene Spires. A big thank you to John Scepura from the church staff, and Rick Skrbin from the Cov-enant Preschool board, for gather-ing the mulch and tools for the stu-dents! Students have been assisting the church in this way each fall and spring for the past few years.

Scenes from Easter

Special thanks to Britney Knight and her mother, Donna Vokish and grand-mother, June Rogers for sewing the cloth together.

Covenant Connections participants created a new Communion Tablecloth during Lent that was first used on Easter. It featured symbols of baptism and the events of Jesus' last week and resurrection.

The Sanctuary and Chapel were prepared for worship by Carol Beach, Rebecca Stoczynski, Stephanie Rose Briggs, volun-teers and staff for Holy Week and Easter.

Thank you, team!
