North eastern water resources development and utilisation
WATER RESOURCES UTILIZATION
•Irrigation, •Domestic Use,• Industry and •Energy Etc.,
Individual farmers need to be encouraged by providing loans to develop irrigation systems like tube-wells, wells, tanks and lift irrigation through pumps, for their own use.
Development of small irrigation units would ensure increase in gross cropped area and higher crop production in agriculture, which is the main stay of the people of the region.
Problems and losses of water
Glaciers melt and flow down to sea as runoff through rivers (Ganges,Brahmaputra, etc.,)
Most of water is in form of ice (in Himalayas) and could not be utilized.
The north region has plenty of water resources, their mismanagement and misuse has resulted in resource degradation, loss of soil and soil fertility, deforestation and environmental degradation
More in-situ retention of rain-water and harvesting of run-off water is necessary to check soil erosion and land degradation in the region
