Monday Homophones
We have done lots of work on homophones in Year 3. This is because they are very tricky - sometimes even grown ups get them mixed up!
Task 1
Watch this video which will tell you more about homophones:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks2-english-homophones-with-johnny-inel/z6fjbdm
Task 2
Match up the pictures to the correct homophone (there are more words than pictures!)
Some words sound the same but have different meanings and are spelt differently.
You need to practise them to make sure you use the right one in your writing.
bare bear maid would
wood grate knight hare
flower stair night bee
sew be so flour
great hair made stare
Monday continued Handwriting
Task 3
Underline the homophone in each sentence below. Then copy out the sentence, practising your neat, joined up handwriting. Remember, you should not rush when you are practising your handwriting.
1. There is a new boy in my class.
2. The rain was very heavy in the night.
3. The bee was buzzing loudly.
4. Her hair is short and curly.
5. The little boy picked a flower for his mummy.
6. The bear is very fluffy.
Challenge
There are hundreds of homophones in the English language but don’t worry, you don’t have to learn them all!
Your challenge for today is to think of as many as you possibly can...can you think of at least ten? Twenty? Fifty?!
Ask your parents to send us your completed list - maybe you will be the Year 3 winner!
Tuesday Introduction lesson: Vocabulary
Endangered animals
Many animals living on Earth today are endangered, which means they are at risk of becoming extinct on Earth. Threatened species include tigers, rhinoceroses, orangutans, turtles and many more. Their numbers have been greatly reduced and only a few now live in the wild. Unfortunately, the biggest threat to animals comes from humans. People are destroying animals’ habitats, such as rainforests. They are using the trees to support our growing human population and replacing the rainforests with farmlands or human settlements. As human settlements take up more of the planet, it leaves less room for wild
animals who may face a shortage of food or places to raise their young. This causes numbers to drop. Many wild animals are also hunted by poachers for their fur, horns or meat. Others are killed by pollution and global warming, which changes the climate and affects the animals’ survival rates. Humans have also introduced new species into some countries that don’t belong there. These new species can bring diseases and kill off the native population.
Over the next few weeks, you will be doing work on endangered animals as part of your English learning.

Wednesday Reading Retrieval: Non-fiction
.
Giant Pandas are very popular animals because of their unusual and beautiful appearance. However, their numbers are falling and there are only around 1,600 left in the wild.
Appearance
These mysterious creatures have the same body type as other bears. They have thick black and white fur, which helps to disguise them in the snowy and rocky surroundings where they live. An adult can grow up to 1.5m. They might look cute but they have razor-like claws and a powerful jaw.
INTERESTING FACTS
Giant pandas are good swimmers
Panda cubs are usually born in August
They poop up to 28 kg per day - that’s about the size of a large dog!
Habitat
Giant pandas live on the mountainous slopes in western China Their habitat is filled with fir trees and bamboo which attracts the panda as bamboo is their favourite food.
Diet
In the wild, their main diet is bamboo. To survive, they need to eat for most of the day. In fact, they eat 15 to 30 kilograms of food every day and spend 10 to 16 hours feeding. In zoos, they have a specially prepared diet of bamboo, eggs, fish and honey.
ENDANGERED One the main reasons that panda populations have declined is habitat destruction. As the human population in China continues to grow, the pandas' habitat gets taken over which leads to food shortages. In the past, pandas were also often hunted by humans for their valuable fur.

Thursday Acrostic Poems
An acrostic poem is a type of poem. It uses the letters in a word to begin each line of the poem. In an acrostic poem, all the lines should be related to the word. Acrostics do not have to rhyme.
For example:
Panda Bears
Paws pointed inward,
Always walking slowly.
Nocturnal eyes glow as they roam in the dark,
Daytime dozer!
And a misty mountain dweller
Bamboo eaters,
Endangered ….
At risk to be gone!
Rare, not many out there.
Shy, lonesome and beautiful bears.
Your Task
Write your own acrostic poem about an endangered animal of your choice. You can choose any animal that you are interested in.
After writing down your ideas, write your poem out neatly and read your poem out loud to an adult.
