1. Engineering DesignCentral Concepts: Engineering design involves practical problem solving, research, development, and invention/innovation, and requires designing, drawing, building, testing, and redesigning. Students should demonstrate the ability to use the engineering design process to solve a problem or meet a challenge.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

1.1 Identify and explain the steps of the engineering design process: identify the problem, research the problem, develop possible solutions, select the best possible solution(s), construct prototypes and/or models, test and evaluate, communicate the solutions, and redesign.

Step 1Identify the

problem

Write down the original problem here.Student - We need to make a robot that an drift with an ultrasonic sensor.

What constraints have been placed on your team? Wednesday

Step 2Research the

problem

Explore other options via the internetStudent: List the internet sites that were helpful.Site 1_www.alpcentauri.info/gear_train_example.htmlSite 2_https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjIEh_8jml8Site 3 _____________________

What did you learn from your research?A We have a lot of possible gear trains to work fromB That a nxt drift car can actually driftC

Step 3Develop solutions BRAINSTORM

COLLABORATION

Student : Share your ideas with your design team. List your ideas below.

1.A fast nxt car with an ultrasonic sensor

2.A regular nxt car with a sound sensor

3.A fast nxt car with a sound sensor and an ultrasonic sensor

Step 4Select the best

Possible solution(s)

Student: Describe which solution(s) best meet the need orsolve the problem. Describe exactly what idea or mixture of ideas your design team decided on for the first robot prototype? Use the next slide for your response.

The Somerset Berkley writing rubric will be used for assessment.

Student : Skillfully and imaginatively describe what your firstprototype will look like.

We need to build a fast gear train that isn’t too fast. It should be compact and be able to hold two gear trains that are parallel to each other as well as an ultrasonic sensor. We need to create wheels that have enough friction to propel the car but not a lot of friction so it wont drift.

Step 5Construct a prototype

Build a robot with your NXT lego kitCreate a computer program for your robot.

Ma.Science and Engineering Framework 2006

Use the next slide(s) for the digital pictures of your prototypes and computer programs.

Step 6Test and Evaluate

the solution(s)

1. Does your robot work? no2. Did it perform as expected? no3. What changes are necessary for the robot and the program? Lessen

the gear ratio4. Does it meet the original design constraints? yes5. Is it safe? Yes 6. Lab work- Modify your robot project and use the next slide to post a picture of your improved robot project.
