Spring

Edition

2017

Rescue is a never-ending mission. As a volunteer, you have your good days and your bad days. Days when you want to yell, scream and shout at the top of your lungs and question yourself why! WHY????

Here are photos of why. Four orphaned babies, their mother hit and killed by a car. They were just a day old. Heartbreaking. This is why! Why, we drop everything and rescue mode sets in. We leave dishes in the sink, our dinners get cold, we get home late and tired; yet we still update everyone that they are safe! We are the voice for those that have none, we are the

angels that drop everything to rush to a rescue, we are the warriors that keep going when we want to give up. These precious babies are now in a foster home with experience in bottle-feeding infant kittens. Hopefully, all 4 will survive and be available for adoption in about 3 to 6 months. Please say a prayer for these precious babies and all the people who rescue animals.

Our wish is that there are hundreds of animals waiting to cross the Rainbow Bridge

with all the dear humans who work so tirelessly to save animals.

Sometimes We Ask Why?

Here’s a poem we printed a while ago that seems appropriate:

A small cat showed up at my door one day looking tired, worn, and weak.

He never left my yard. Pet Friends took him in the following week.

My father asked me why I bother?

Why I waste my time this way? He’s just another homeless stray. Does it really matter anyway?

I said,

It matters to this one.

He deserves a chance to grow. It matters to this one.

I can’t save them all I know.

It matters to this one. I’ll help him live to love and just be.

Because it matters to this one. It matters a lot to me.

Pet Friends set up an Alumni Picture Page on FaceBook! Pictures and comments are coming in from happy furever families. This is always a "pat on the back" for all our

hard work. Stop by FaceBook and check out of some of our happy furtails!!!

It’s annual election time! We will be accepting nominations for Board positions at our April Membership meeting on Monday, April 17th. Open positions are for our

fundraising coordinator and Canine Coordinator. We welcome everyone interested in serving on our Board; but you must be nominated at our April meeting and you must

have been a member in 2016.

Voting will be conducted at our May Membership meeting on Monday, May 15th. Only people who have paid their 2017 membership dues prior to May 15th may vote in our

elections.

It was a wonderful Holiday Season for volunteers and their families. It was also a very wonderful December for Pet Friends because of the kindness, in the form of donations, from so many

of our readers. We sincerely thank everyone who sent in donations, as well as alumni letters, not only in December, but all

through the year. We can’t rescue without YOU!

Another very special thank YOU goes to the Blizzard Family Charitable Fund for the second large donation made to Pet Friends.

So very many animals will benefit from your kindness! We humbly thank you with all our hearts.

We are always in need of both dog and cat volunteers to help us clean cages, walk

dogs, socialize cats, and work at fundraisers. Would you consider helping us for even a few hours once or twice a month or at a fundraiser? Call us. 724-863-7722.

We’d be so happy to hear from you! Special thank YOUs go to our volunteers who recently helped to

clean our kennel, remove all the items that had fallen apart, shopped and replaced needed items, washed every nook &

cranny, and made the kennel look top-notch! You’re the BEST!!!

Pet Friends was once again able to have a Holiday Donation Drive, from November 20th to December 31st at Burton’s

Total Pet, Burton's Total Pet, 8957 State Route 30, Irwin. Thank you, Burton’s for their help and support of our organization, and our committee for all they did to set up: Lisa Smith, Keirstin Rotharmel, Stephanie Flambard, and Faye Kuch. Keirstin designed our 2016 wish list. This information was also on our website and FaceBook.

We received a number of donated Items, including: Copy paper, bleach, paper towels, new bath mats for the cats, pillow cases, packages of cat treats, canned and dry cat food, cat litter, various cat toys, dog leashes and harnesses, canned and dry dog food, dog treats, dog toys, canned pumpkin, peanut butter.

On behalf of the dogs and cats of Pet Friends, and all our volunteers, a sincere thank you to all who contributed to this drive. We appreciate it!

Pet Friends once again held their annual Photos with Santa on December 10th. As they did last year, Bob Massie Toyota Scion, 12204 Route 30, North Huntingdon, helped us out immensely by not only making a large donation, but by letting us hold this event at their showroom. Special thanks go to Sammy Smith for being our Santa and Jeff Hines for being our photographer. Additional thanks go to all our elves who helped plan, decorate, direct participants, and for working so hard to make the event go so smoothly. Pet Friends earned over $2,300 on this event and had a great time talking with all the wonderful people who brought their pets and children for this past Season’s photograph!

In December, Pet Friends finalized our Steeler Jersey raffle, which was framed and signed by Antonio Brown. We sold tickets through the months of October through December and earned over $2,600 on this event! Special thanks go to all our volunteers who took care of obtaining the signed shirt and framing it, as well as everyone who sold tickets. Thank you, so very much, for all you did to make this fundraiser a success!

Our volunteers enjoyed our annual Holiday Party on Monday evening, December 5th at Jacktown Ride & Hunt Club. It was a very nice evening where our volunteers got to relax and enjoy the company of other volunteers without animals needing attention. (All food, drinks, and raffle prizes were paid for by our volunteers.) Thank you to all of you who came to the dinner and especially to those who donated the raffle prizes! If you missed it, hope you can come this year.

Apply Sunscreen: You should apply sunscreen on your pets if they spend more than just a few minutes outside, every day, in the summer sun. Pets with light skin and short or thin coats are particularly prone to sunburn and skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in dogs and the second most common in cats. Even though fur provides some protection from the sun, you should apply a pet sunblock every 3 to 4 hours to the least-hair-covered spots: Bellies on dogs (especially ones who like to lie on their backs), ears, and around eyes on cats (which are also areas where malignant tumors are likely to show up.) The sunscreen should be fragrance free, non-staining, and contain UVA and UVB barriers similar to sunscreens made for humans. Look for sunscreens made specifically for pets. Dehydration and Heat Protection: Dehydration in dogs and cats is a real possibility during the summer, especially if your pet is the type to run and play outside for extended periods. Telltale signs of dehydration include dry or bright red gums, loss of skin elasticity, heavy panting, excessive drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and wobbly legs. If your dog shows signs of heat stress, don’t place her in ice cold water (which can put her into shock.) Instead, move her to a cool place, drape a damp towel over her body, rewet the cloth frequently, and get her to the vet as soon as you possibly can. A dog's normal temperature is between 100° and 103°F, so once she hits 104°F, she's in dangerous territory. 106°F Or higher can be fatal.

Never leave a dog in the car. You may think leaving your pet in a car for a few minutes is no big deal, but it can quickly lead to heat stroke in both dogs and cats. Even if windows are cracked, in bright sunshine, your car acts like an oven, becoming much hotter inside than the outside. In fact, on a sunny 70-degree day, your car can heat up to over 100 degrees within minutes. So, either take your pet with you or leave him at home during shopping trips.

Don't walk your dog during the day's highest heat and humidity, which is usually between 1 and 4pm. This is especially important for dogs with short snouts, such as bulldogs, who can't pant as efficiently in humid weather due to their narrowed nostrils and windpipes.

Keep your dog’s coat long. While it may seem logical to cut your pet's coat short, resist the urge. If hair, even long hair, is brushed and not matted, it provides better circulation and helps regulate body temperature. Burn Relief: If your pet does get burned, apply a thin layer of pure Aloe Vera twice daily to soothe the irritated area. (Check the brand with your vet first, for your pet’s safety.) Watch for Unknown Grassy Knolls: Pets love to run, play and just investigate grassy areas. But do you realize how many lawns are treated with fertilizers and pesticides during the summer? Keep your pet safe this summer by keeping them off unknown grassy areas. Find a safe spot in your neighborhood or city, like a dog park. Avoid Antifreeze: Even though antifreeze is something to watch out for year-round, cars tend to overheat more and leak antifreeze during the summer. Pets find it delicious and even in very small amounts, antifreeze is poisonous to animals. So be attentive when walking your dog around the neighborhood or letting your outdoor cat roam the streets. Be safe in/near water: Have your dog wear a life vest of a bright color in any type of water to help her stay afloat and ensure that she can be seen by swimmers and boaters. Make it easy by leting her get used to wearing it in your yard first.

Beware of currents and riptides. If a dog gets in trouble in one of these in the ocean, whether while swimming or fetching a ball, she can be swept out to sea in minutes. The same goes for rivers. You need to watch out for currents, even if they're not readily visible, because your dog can be easily carried downstream. Also, be on the lookout in lakes. If your dog steps in a sinkhole, she may panic and need you to help her swim to where she can touch ground again. Avoid lakes and ponds with blue-green algae, signified by scummy water and a foul odor. Algae can produce a toxin that may cause severe sickness or seizures quickly if your pet ingests the water, by either drinking from the lake or licking tainted fur.

Summer Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe

Page 7

Teach your dog how to get out of the pool by practicing to use the stairs with her 5 to 10 times in a row. This will help her learn where the stairs are, whether she's swimming or accidentally falls in and panics trying to climb out. In the deep end, consider putting in a pool ramp. Send parasites packing: Hookworms and heartworms are more prevalent during the summer and can infect your pet through the pads of his feet. Ask your vet for a prescription for Heartgard Plus or Interceptor Flavor Tabs, which will help keep parasites at bay. Opt for pet-friendly, human insect repellents. Don't share: Barbecue scraps and fatty leftovers can give your pup pancreatitis, causing severe abdominal pain or death. Corn on the cob and peach pits are also a huge no-no because they can lodge in a dog's intestines. Skip the azaleas: These common backyard shrubs can be toxic for dogs and cats if ingested, resulting in drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, heart arrhythmias, or an abnormal heart rate. Limit the lilies: Daylilies and Asiatic, Easter, or Stargazer lilies and their pollen can cause acute kidney failure in cats. Ingestion of as little as two to three leaves can be fatal, so remove these plants from your yard if you let your cat out.

Easy toy to make for your dog: The Sock ‘n’ Ball

You will need: 1 sturdy sock and 1 old tennis ball Place the ball inside the sock to the toe-end, and then tie a knot just above the ball to seal it

inside. Probably the cheapest, easiest, and handiest pet toy you can make!

Easy toy to make for your cat: Ring Ball

You will need: An empty cardboard toilet paper roll, Scissors, and Treats Mark four, 1/4-inch (or finger-width) marks on the side of the cardboard roll. Use the scissors

to cut each ring. Insert the first ring into the second ring, then continue with the third and fourth, until you’ve formed a ball. Then put the treats inside the ball and enjoy watching your

cat have a great time!

Fun Summer Game to play with your Dog

Why not build your own outdoor agility course? Teaching your dog to maneuver over jumps, into tunnels, up and down a-frames, around poles is a great way to challenge a dogs mind and body, as well as forge an even greater bond

between the two of you. Be creative – use old kids’ toys or exercise equipment to build your own tunnels, bridges and obstacles. The possibilities are endless!

Fun Summer Game to play with your Cat

Bouncing a ping-pong ball into an empty bathtub will bring your cat running. Take all soap, shampoo and other products out of the way, and close the drain to keep the ball from settling there. Cats will enjoy chasing the ball as it rolls from

side to side. They'll hit it with extended paws, kick it with hind feet or knock it off the edge to see it fly high. More than one ping-pong ball turns your tub into a kitty arcade as the balls cross paths and the cat does his best to follow both. If

the rocketing sound of a ping-pong ball is too loud for you, substitute one of those plastic Easter eggs that cats also love. Lighter in weight, these oval shapes will spin and tumble as your cat bats them back and forth. The eggs also come

apart, and cats enjoy capturing the halves between their paws, or picking one up in their teeth, making Kitty look like he's wearing a colorful surgical mask.

Dear Pet Friends,

My husband and I adopted our Lab mix in August 2014. My husband picked her out and loved her at first sight. Little did I know that a year later I would lose my husband. I don’t know what I would have don’t without Storm (aka Pepsi). She has been an absolute comfort to me. I love her very much. Thanks to all of you for this dog. God Bless all of you. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to all of you.

Jean

Dear Pet Friends,

My cats were adopted in December 2008 when they were just four months old. They’re now eight years old and remain healthy, active, ornery, and affectionate. Rocky is my buddy, likes to play with me, and still likes to ride around on my shoulders. Lucy spends a lot of time on my lap and she sleeps with me. They are great little companions.

Larry

Hello & Merry Christmas to everyone at Pet Friends!

Just wanted to send our annual update on Cub & Jewel, who we adopted from Pet Friends in August 2010 (they were named Henry & Hilary at that time). Cub is pictured in the middle and Jewel is on the far right. Their sister Allie is on the far left. Cub & Jewel are doing wonderfully! Jewel is attached at the hip to my husband and Cub loves to snuggle with me all hours of the day. They have brought such joy to our lives and both are so good with our almost 2-year-old daughter. They will have another little human to play with come May! We know they will continue to be the best pets. Thanks for all you do at Pet Friends. Without you, our family would be incomplete!

Dear Pet Friends,

Merry Christmas to All! Zack is 14 years old and cannot hear anymore; but he can see and smell and walk. He has a good appetite and has his morning and evening mealtime down pat!

Hi Pet Friends,

We adopted Casey 7 years ago, when he was 9 months old. He goes everywhere with us. In this photo, we were at Ridgeway Wood Caverns in February 2016. Love & God Bless for all you do.

Dear Pet Friends,

Enclosed is a picture of Scrappy. Once again, I can’t thank you enough for helping me with Scrappy. I trapped him and your organization helped to have him neutered. It has been almost three years now and Scrappy is thriving. My husband built him a two-story condo outside, which is insulated and he loves. We also put a cat door in our garage so when it is cold he can come inside. We have a couple of beds, food and water for him there also. He is still very nervous and needs an exit even when he comes inside our cellar but he is very loveable and spends much time with us. I do not like having an outdoor cat because we worry about him constantly but so far, he is always there or comes as soon as I call. He has a bad eye which I would like to have looked at but I don’t think it would be feasible to take him to the Vet right now. Hopefully in the future we can have him checked out. Anytime we are outside he is there with us. He will even lay on my lap! We love him very much! Thanks again for your help.

Nadine

Dear Pet Friends,

Wanted to send you a picture of Buddy (AKA Bear). Have a wonderful Holiday. We will stop by soon.

Dear Pet Friends,

I adopted my Ky-Lie (AKA Pink) over two years ago, and she has been a wonderful pet and is my shadow. I love her beyond measure. Special blessing to all of you who devoted time and caring to these helpless babies. Thank you! Wishing all of you special grace for your work.

In Honor of: Morris (big orange kitty at top) who came to Pet Friends as an owner surrender due to a divorce. During the time that Morris was with Pet Friends, his mom kept in very close contact with the foster home in hopes of one day being able to have her baby back. As time passed his mom realized she needed to make the hardest decision and that was to permanently surrender him to the rescue so he could have a stable and permanent home. Morris is a gentle giant of sorts. He is as sweet as he is large and fluffy and has the patience of a saint. He lived nicely in his foster home with multiple other cats, dogs and children but never had the chance to shine and show who he really was until the day he was adopted by an amazing and loving family! Since then Morris has blossomed even more and has made himself right at home. He enjoys laying around with his new fur siblings and helping his new dad do school work. They say memories are golden. Well maybe that is true. I never wanted memories. I only wanted you. A million times I needed you, a million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died.

In life, I loved you dearly. In death, I love you still. In my heart, you hold a place that no one will ever fill. If tears could build a stairway and heartache make a lane, I'd walk the path to heaven and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same; but as God calls us one by one, the chain will link again.
