Saturday, November 2nd at 9:00 am. We need to spruce up the place for Bishop Goff’s visit the next day! Dear Friends in Christ, This coming Sunday I will be leaving for several days at our diocesan camp Shrine Mont. The first full day will be participating in the “Fresh Start” program for clergy who have recently begun a new pastoral position. The program assists clergy in deepening their relationship with the people they serve in the new congregation. There will be occasional meetings of this “Fresh Start” group over the next year. Immediately following the “Fresh Start” program, our annual diocesan Clergy Conference begins. The agenda for this year’s conference will be exploring the art of “powerful questions” and discovering practical ways to let go of some old paradigms, re-imagine new approaches to forming disciples, and gain new insight for leading thriving congregations . The leader of the conference is Melissa Rau, the Senior Program Director of Leadership at Episcopal Church Foundation. She is responsible for overseeing the ECF Leadership Resources areas, which includes Vital Practices, webinars and training, publications and the ECF Fellowship Partners program. Melissa focuses in particular on shaping entrepreneurial and transformational leadership in churches and the communities they serve. She has written and published curriculum and numerous articles for online and printed publications, and more recently co-authored a book — “Ten Solutions for Small Churches.” Veterans and Active Military Ministry ~ The deadline for the Blue Star Families of Central VA next holiday care package shipment to deployed troops is November 18th. Minutes for St. Luke’s, Simeon Vestry Meeting October 8, 2019 at 6:00 pm, Berberich Hall

Present: The Rev. Randy Haycock, Joe Gieck, Joanne Rawls, Ron Ignotz, Debbie King, Rick Febey, Lou Lamb and Ashby Kindler, Treasurer Absent: Tom Parker

Opening Prayer- Randy

Devotional- Joe Gieck, Revelations and Phillipians, “Be thou faithful until death.” Joe shared memories of his mother making notes and reading from her bible which he now uses daily.

Approval of September, 2019 minutes (sent online separately)- Ron moved to accept and APPROVED

Old Business • Worship Committee – discussed how to have quiet time at the beginning of the service. The gong was used

and Joe said he believes Buddy fixed the bell. Randy also said Rite 3 discusses different ways to arrange the liturgy

• Celebration of New Ministry – Randy is looking at dates. He also will also ask about the possibility of holding it during Bishop Goff’s visit to St Luke’s.

• Diaper Ministry – Lou will call Love INC & Randy will check with Little Learners in Scottsville for diaper needs

• Ed Kilbourne’s Visit – October 20, discussed that it has been undersubscribed and may be cancelled. Joann said a decision will be made at a meeting tomorrow afternoon.

• Name Plates-Joann will ask Joanne Brust about what she has found out from parishioners for new name plates. Joe said he is satisfied with the one he has & maybe we can offer to those who want a new one to talk to Joanne Brust.

• Bishop’s Visitation – November 3, All Saints Sunday. Randy plans to go out to the cemetery and have a prayer out there.

• Babs injured her shoulder-discussion followed about needing to find a sub for Sunday and Randy will find out. Also, Ashby said we need to keep a count of numbers of times she misses for payroll reasons.

New Business • Spiritual Practice and Formation- Randy said at the recent the CREDO conf. they explored their “rule of

life,” how to stay connected emotionally & spiritually. For 80% of Americans today, their only experience

of religion is what they see on TV (like TV evangelists). Discussed bible studies, lots of resources out there. Randy said he is the Christian rep at Yogaville and is doing a workshop on Veteran’s Day.

Rector Report - Randy Haycock asked if he could get a better idea of who does what in the parish. Randy will check out the Annual Report.

Financial Reports – Ashby Kindler • Discretionary acct needs to keep a balance of $500. • Insurance policy (Church Insurance Co. of VT). Ashby said she answered questions about our acct. Joe said

a copy should be kept in the church locked file cabinets. Also discussed workman’s comp which Ashby will look into.

• Issues with multiple billing from Church Publishing for our inserts. Randy will call the company to sort it in addition to discussing with Joanne Brust.

• Make sure to date & initial the offering sheets • Joe moved to approve the budget report, Debbie second and APPROVED

Budget committee: Bob, Ashby & Tom Torrance • Needs a vestry member (Randy said he would like to be included as well)

o Rick suggested Tom Parker and Randy will call him (he is still in Mass. and will return in the next month.)

• Large items to include in 2020 budget o Driveway- $8,000 for possible spring installation

Senior Warden Report- Joe Gieck • Asked who was going off the Vestry – Debbie, Ron and Judy. We need to consider who might replace

them. Randy suggested 2 year terms. Ashby & Joe said historically we have had too many members. Joe suggested maybe 2 years is too short, need institutional memory.

• Gifting- will get together next month, $7800 allocated for this cycle • Pledging-need someone to head it up for the 2020 year from the congregation. Consists of writing a letter

and sending out the cards and people return to the offering plate. Joe will ask Stan Dunn.

Junior Warden Report- Ron Ignotz • Driveway estimates

o First estimate, (Joann’s): extend apron another 12 ft, remove loose gravel and resurface with tar & chips=$15,700

o Second estimate, Williamson Company: extend apron, remove loose gravel & resurface = $6200 o Rick asked if we could see some work that Williamson’s company has done with such a difference in

estimate costs. Joe & Ashby have said they are a well-respected, large company. Rick also asked if Ron could call the first estimate company and see if they might explain their pricing. Joann also asked Ron to email her the information from the Williamson company (minus his estimate) so we could compare the two estimate information.

o Joe said he will also get an estimate for paving with black top • Ron said that the restaurant (formerly SALT) across the street’s loan did not come through & they will not

be opening. Jefferson Winery owns the property. • Ron will call and have our heating unit serviced (annual). Burners replaced last Nov. • Joe asked about the tiles to replace in the sacristy and Ron will check it out.
