FOY CONTENDERS PUT INFINAL BREEZES
Undefeated “TDN Rising Star” Zulu (Bernardini), Mucho
Macho Man S. winner Awesome Speed (Awesome Again) and
fellow “TDN Rising Star” Cherry Wine (Paddy O’Prado) all
breezed in Florida Sunday morning in preparation for
Gulfstream’s GII Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 27.
Owned by Stonestreet Stables, Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor
and Derrick Smith, Zulu worked a half-mile in :48.21 (4/19) at
trainer Todd Pletcher’s Palm Beach Downs base.
“It went very well,” Pletcher remarked. “He went in 48-and-1.
He breezed by himself with John Velazquez aboard. He got into
a nice comfortable rhythm and clicked off 12s around there all
the way around. He looked good and galloped out well. I’m very
happy with it. All is on schedule.”
A debut winner sprinting at Gulfstream Dec. 5, Zulu romped by
7 1/4 lengths in a seven-furlong optional claimer there Jan. 15.
The bay makes his first attempt around two turns in Saturday’s
test, where he will face a strong field that includes undefeated
GII Holy Bull S. winner Mohaymen (Tapit).
“We certainly could have opted for an easier spot and shipped
out of town somewhere,” said Pletcher, who won last year’s
renewal with Itsaknockout (Lemon Drop Kid) via DQ. “We just
felt like he’s two-for-two at Gulfstream. It’s nice to keep him on
a consistent path where he’s familiar with where he’s running.
We know he likes the surface, but it’s obviously a tall order.”

‘BRILLIANT’ WORK FOR SONGBIRD Undefeated champion Songbird (Medaglia d’Oro) put in what
Hall of Fame pilot Mike Smith called a “brilliant” five-furlong
work in 1:00.80 (20/90) in Arcadia Sunday morning.
“A minute and four-fifths and just as easy as you please,”
commented Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer.
As for the Fox Hill Farm colorbearer’s next start, Hollendorfer
said he had not made up his mind as to whether she will run in
the GIII Santa Ysabel S. Mar. 5 or train up to the GI Santa Anita
Oaks Apr. 9.
An ultra-impressive winner of the GI Del Mar Debutante S.,
GI Chandelier S. and GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies during a
perfect four-for-four championship season last term, Songbird
kicked off her sophomore season with a sensational 6 1/2-length
success in Arcadia’s GII Las Virgenes S. Feb. 6.

FOY Contenders Put in Final Breezes cont. from p1 Also set to line up for the Fountain of Youth is Colts NeckStables’ Awesome Speed, who fired a best-of-45 half-mile bulletin :48.30 at Palm Meadows. “He went great,” said trainer Alan Goldberg, who flew in fromhis New Jersey base to supervise the work. “He got off in :13,went :48 and one or two, galloped out in a minute andchange, and galloped outthree-quarters in 1:14. He cameback fine and not blowing.Everything is all good. We’reready.” Failing to fire when seventh inhis career bow sprinting at ParxAug. 31, Awesome Speedearned his diploma next out with a decisive victory at Laurel Oct.10 and followed suit with a win in that venue’s James F. Lewis IIIS. next out Nov. 14. The dark bay was last seen winning theMucho Macho Man S. going Gulfstream’s one-turn mile Jan. 2. Frank Jones, Jr. and William Pacella’s Cherry Wine also breezedSunday for the Fountain of Youth, covering five furlongs in1:00.11 (2/21) at Gulfstream Park. The Dale Romans trainee took a few starts to figure things out,but put it all together ina big way with a 9 1/4-length romp in asloppy 1 1/16-mile off-the-turfer at Churchill Nov. 28. The grayearned “TDN Rising Star” status last out when unleashing apowerful late rally to score by six lengths in a track-and-tripoptional claimer Jan. 9.
RISEN STAR RUNNERS IN GOOD FORM Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm’s Gun
Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) is in good shape following his victory
in Saturday’s GII Risen Star S. at the Fair Grounds, according to
trainer Steve Asmussen.
G M B Racing’s Mo
Tom (Uncle Mo), winner
of the GIII LeComte S. in
NOLA Jan. 16, suffered a
minor gash to his right
front leg after being
forced to check badly in
the stretch. The bay
rallied impressively to be
a close third and is in fine form aside from the cut, according to
trainer Tom Amoss, who also saddled Venus Valentine
(Congrats) to a 74-1 upset in the GIII Rachel Alexandra S.
Saturday.
“Both horses look good today,” Amoss reported. “[Mo Tom’s
wound] is a non factor. We are very fortunate.”
John Oxley’s MGSW Airoforce (Colonel John) has returned to
Florida after a disappointing effort as the 8-5 chalk in the Risen
Star, finishing 10th of 11.
“He’s fine and he flew back to Florida this morning,”
conditioner Mark Casse said. “We’re going to bring him home to
Ocala and go over him some more and make sure we don’t find
anything. We will see how that goes and go from there.”
Never worse than second prior to the Risen Star, Airoforce
following a debut win at Kentucky Downs last September with a
victory in the turfy GIII Bourbon S. at Keeneland a month later
and just missed when second in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile
Turf Oct. 30. The gray was trying dirt for the first time last out
when capturing a sloppy renewal of Churchill’s GII Kentucky
Jockey Club S. Nov. 28, a race in which Mo Tom finished third
and Gun Runner finished fourth.

‘CHATTERBOX’ AIMS FOR APPLE BLOSSOM Eclipse finalist I’m a Chatterbox (Munnings) will likely makeher 2016 debut in Oaklawn’s GI Apple Blossom H. Apr. 15,according to trainer Larry Jones. Stablemate and “TDN RisingStar” Cassatt (Tapit) is also possible for the 1 1/16-mile test.
“Probably only one wouldcome,” Jones said. “We’ll justsee who is the highest caliber atthat time.” Fletcher and Carolyn Grayhomebred I’m a Chatterboxbeat up on her rivals in the FairGrounds GI Kentucky Oaks prepseries last season, scoring
decisive victories in the Silverbulletday S., GIII Rachel AlexandraS. and GII Fair Grounds Oaks. A late-running third behindstablemate Lovely Maria (Majesticperfection) in the Oaks May 1,she was then given a well-deserved breather and did not returnuntil Saratoga. The chestnut crossed the wire first when next seen in the Spa’sGI CCA Oaks July 26, but was disqualified and placed second forinterference. A gutsy second next out in that venue’s GI Alabama S., she finally got her Grade I victory at Parx in the GI Cotillion S. Sept. 19 and was a troubled eighth when last seenin the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland Oct. 30.
I’m a Chatterbox boasts a pair of three-panel drills at the Fair
Grounds since her return to action earlier this month, covering
the distance in :35.40 Feb. 8 (click here for story) and slowing it
down a bit to :38.20 Feb. 14.
“She’s just now back to breezing, but she runs very well fresh,”
commented Jones, who does not plan on running either filly in
Oaklawn’s GII Azeri S Mar. 19, which is the local prep for the
Apple Blossom. “[Chatterbox] runs good fresh, so we are not so
much worried about having to have a prep.”
Fox Hill Farms and Hill ‘n’ Dale Equine Holdings GSW Cassatt
closed out last term with a victory in Remington’s She’s All In H.
Dec. 13. The gray made her seasonal bow last month at Sam

DIVISIDERO TO RETURN IN CANADIAN TURF
Last term’s GII American Turf S. hero Divisdero (Kitten’s Joy) isscheduled to make his return to the races Saturday atGulfstream in the GIII Canadian Turf S. One of the top turfsophomores last term, the Gunpowder Farms runner has beenoff since finishing a disappointing seventh in the GI BelmontDerby July 4. “He went straight from the racetrack right to the pasture,”trainer Buff Bradley said. “He needed some time to mature. Hechecked out good at the clinic. We felt like there wasn’t a wholelot left in the 3-year-old division for him. He filled out andgained some weight and really looked good when he came backto me. He looked like a different horse when he came back tome. He’d gotten time to mature, which I think is the key forthese horses turning from three to four and facing olderhorses.” A first-out graduate over this course last February, the bayfinished third in the GIII Palm Beach S. in Hallandale a monthlater and came flying late to score an impressive victory in theChurchill’s American Turf on Derby day May 2. He was equallyimpressive last out in winning Belmont’s Pennine Ridge May 30prior to his lackluster effort in the Belmont Derby. “That was the thing with us bringing him back here to get backon the turf course where he started and ran well on,” Bradleysaid. “He broke his maiden in his first race and it looked like hewas going to win the stake race in his second, but he just got introuble.” Divisidero has been working well in preparation for his return, most recently breezing four furlongs over the Gulfstream maintrack in :47.87 Feb. 20. “He’s been breezing well for his comeback and has been doingeverything right,” Bradley remarked. Click here for Steve Sherack’s update on Divisidero earlier thismonth.
LANI FAILS TO SHINE AT TOKYOby Alan Carasso
A trip to Dubai for the G2 UAE Derby and a potential U.S.
campaign to include a start in the GI Kentucky Derby or
GI Belmont S., looms a question mark for Yoko Maeda’s Lani
(Tapit), after the grey colt
finished a lackluster fifth as
the favorite in Sunday’s 1600-
meter Hyacinth S. at Tokyo
Racecourse.
Drawn gate six in a full field
of 14, Lani was slow away
and dropped out to be last
early on, not appearing
entirely comfortable in the kickback over a dirt surface officially
listed as ‘heavy.’ Steered into the clear by Yutaka Take nearing
the end of the backstretch, Lani commenced an impressive,
sweeping seven-wide move that catapulted him onto even
terms with the leaders at the head of the lane and it looked for a
few strides as if the colt would be able to sustain his
momentum. But he soon began to labor while not switching his
leads, was overhauled by 6-1 chance Gold Dream (Jpn) (Gold
Allure {Jpn}) at the 200-meter mark and weakened out to finish
fifth, beaten just under three lengths.

Undefeated Smokey Image (Southern Image) breezed five furlongs in
company in 1:00.40 at Santa Anita Sunday morning in preparation for
the GII San Felipe S. Mar. 12. “I just worked him in company to give
him a little target,” trainer Carla Gaines said. “He did it pretty easily.”

Trio of Gulfstream Jockeys Injured in Melody of Colors:
Joel Rosario and Rafael Hernandez will be sidelined for at least
a month and Edgard Zayas is off until Wednesday due to injuries
suffered in a spill during Gulfstream’s Melody of Color S.
Saturday. Rosario fractured his wrist and will be out for “four to
five weeks,” according to agent Ron Anderson.
“It’s a standard fracture like anyone would get trying to break
their fall,” Anderson said. “They’ll put a plate on it Monday to
speed things up. We’re very lucky it’s not worse. Joel’s helmet
split right in two, so that helmet did its job and probably saved
his life.”
Hernandez suffered a broken collarbone and several broken
ribs in the incident.
“There’s no damage to the spine,” Hernandez’s agent Cliff
Collier said. “He’ll remain in the hospital for three or four more
days just to make sure everything is OK. The ribs are painful. I
would say he’ll be out six weeks at least. Probably more.”
Zayas, like Rosario, walked off the track on his own, but took
off his mounts Sunday due to a swollen ankle. He is expected to
ride Wednesday when racing resumes in Hallandale.
The riders were unseated when Hernandez’s mount Brandy’s
Girl (Posse) fell in the stretch. The dark bay and Zayas’s mount
Hi Holiday (Harlan’s Holiday) escaped without injury, but
Rosario’s mount Kandoo (Kantharos) had to be euthanized.

Off The Tracks, winner of last term’s GIII Schuylerville S.,
successfully returned to the races to remain unbeaten in
Gulfstream’s Sunday afternoon feature. A first-out graduate
going five furlongs at Gulfstream June 13, the bay added a win in
Saratoga’s opening day fixture July 24 before being sidelined for
the remainder of the year. Sent postward as the second choice
as GI Spinaway S.
runner-up and ‘TDN Rising
Star’ Tap To It (Tapit) took
the heaviest support, the
bay was away in good
order and was perched on
the outside tracking the
pace as Ballet Diva (Hear
No Evil) led through a
quarter in :22.97 and a
half in :45.65. Momentarily ceding an extra length to that rival
on the turn, Off the Tracks re-found her best stride turning for
home, collared Ballet Diva in the lane and moved away to notch
a convincing score. Sugar Cone rallied to complete the exacta,
while Tap to It reported home fifth. The winner, who sold for
$50,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, is a half to GII West
Virginia Derby and GIII Iowa Derby winner Concord Point. Her
dam was most recently bred to Awesome Again. “I was very
impressed,” commented winning trainer Roderick Rodriguez,
who added that his ultimate goal with Off The Tracks is the
GI Kentucky Oaks via a likely stop in the GII Gulfstream Park
Oaks Apr. 2. “The pace was so fast that I was afraid it was going
to take a toll on her at the end, and Tap to It closes fast. But,
she’s just an incredible filly. The sky’s the limit with her.” Click

3rd Dam: Demi Souer, by Storm Bird
Unified took all the money and delivered the goods in his
career debut, continuing a big weekend for Candy Ride, who
was represented by Fair Grounds graded stakes winners Gun
Runner and Chocolate Ride. Unified, a $325,000 Fasig-Tipton
Saratoga yearling buy, worked
steadily at Palm Meadows dating
back to late December and was
hammered down to 4-5
favoritism by the time the gates
opened. Away to a razor-sharp
beginning, he set the pace
through a quarter-mile in :22.37
and was hawked by fellow
firster--and $500,000 Keeneland September acquisition--
Mutaraamy (Tapit) through a half in :45.14. Unified shook free
from that rival cornering for home, held an open-length
advantage by midstretch and glided across the wire three
lengths clear, stopping the clock in a swift 1:08.95. Mutaraamy
held on to complete the exacta. “He had been doing real good,”
confirmed winning trainer Jimmy Jerkens. “We would have been
pretty disappointed if he at least didn’t run real well. We didn’t
know who we were really running up against, but he had been
training great for the past month. He couldn’t have broken any
sharper today. It looked like they opened his doors before the
others.” Curlins Vow (Curlin), the half to champion Runhappy
(Super Saver), was fourth. Unified, a half-brother to Honkeytonk
Man (Bluegrass Cat, MSP, $101,557), hails from the extended
family of champion MGISW Dehere (Deputy Minister). Union
City, purchased for $260,000 with Honkeytonk Man in utero at

UNIFIED A HORSE IN THE CENTENNIAL MOLDby Jessica Martini
“It’s always a big question mark with a first-time starter, but
we’ve always liked this horse,” Centennial Farms’ president Don
Little, Jr. said shortly after watching Unified streak to an
impressive debut victory at Gulfstream Park Sunday. “He’s
trained with a lot of class, so we were excited. We were
cautiously optimistic.”
Unified gave connections no time to worry once the gates
opened, blitzing out to the early lead and going wire-to-wire in a
sparkling 1:08.95.
“It was a little surprising,” Little admitted about the final time.
“We knew he had some speed, but the way he did it looked
pretty effortless for him. I was really impressed with the way he
broke--he really shot out of there. I almost missed it, he broke
so quick.”
Bidding on behalf of his Centennial partnership, Little went to
$325,000 to secure Unified at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga
Sale.
“There were only two horses that year at the sale that we
liked,” Little recalled Sunday. “We liked his pedigree, but we
really liked the way he walked. He looked around like he was
really aware of what was happening and with a very keen eye.
He had a lot of presence. He had a great walk, great shoulder,
very fluid in his walk. And we loved his pedigree; we knew
Candy Ride was on the way up. He sort of fit the Centennial
mold of a Classic-type horse.”
Unified was training with Jimmy Jerkens at Saratoga in
anticipation of a start last fall, but an ankle injury sent him to the
sidelines.
“He was supposed to start last September, but he had a minor
setback,” Little revealed. “But even before the setback, Jimmy
always said that he looked like he had a ton of ability and could
really run.”
As for where Unified will go next, Little said, “We’ll see what
happens next. I would think he would go in an allowance next
time, but where I don’t know. It might be tempting to send him
back to New York sooner than later because the purses might be
a little bit better.”
Little was busy entertaining partners Sunday afternoon, still
celebrating their colt’s promising debut.
“We are happy to have the people we have involved in this
horse,” he said. “We have some clients who have been with us
for years and a couple of them who are in this partnership were
not in [Centennial’s GISW] Wicked [Strong], so we are hoping we
can have some success with new people involved.” Cont. p3

in her Jan. 23 debut at Tampa Bay. The only runner with
previous race experience in the field, the chestnut filly was sent

lead along the rail, was in hand through fractions of :22.96 and
:46.02 and sailed clear down the rail to score by three lengths.
Just Joking, whose second dam is champion Safely Kept,

GIII Arlington-Washington Futurity at seven furlongs, but was
well beaten when ninth in the Nov. 1 Street Sense S. at Churchill
Downs and Jan. 18 Smarty Jones S. at Oaklawn Park, both over
the dirt at a mile. Cutting back to 6 1/2 furlongs and returning to
a synthetic surface, the bay colt controlled the pace through
fractions of :22.19 and :45.02 and held sway late for a confident
tally. “I wanted to see what I just saw,” said winning trainer
Scott Becker. “Maybe it was a little quick early, but he likes to
run a little more free like that. He had some trouble in his last
couple races, and I think this surface is more kind to him.”
Becker labelled Shogood “probably 50-50" to return in Turfway’s
1 1/16-mile Battaglia Memorial. “I think the distance limitations
will probably keep us from it,” Becker said. “I’m not positive at
this point. We’ll see what happens.” Click for the Equibase.com

LIGHTNING’S IMPRESSIVEROLL OF HONOUR
by John Berry
The Lightning Stakes at Flemington, Australia's principal 1000m
weight-for-age race, has been won by some great horses since
its inauguration in 1955. As its current title the Black Caviar
Lightning Stakes suggests, arguably the greatest (and definitely
the most celebrated) of its winners has been Black Caviar (Aus)
(Bel Esprit {Aus}), the mighty mare who went undefeated in a
25-race career between April 2009 and April 2013.
For much of its existence, the Lightning Stakes attracted
minimal attention outside Australia, even though some its
winners rank as all-time greats. Sky High (Aus) (Star Kingdom
{Ire}), who took it in 1961 and '62, remains the only horse to
have won both the Golden Slipper and the VRC Derby. He is also
the permanent record-holder for 10 furlongs at Flemington,
having won the 1961 Mackinnon Stakes in 2:00.7, a record
which was still standing 11 years later when Australia replaced
the imperial system with metric measurements.
Subsequent champion sire Century (Aus) (Better Boy {Ire}) was
superb in 1974 when winning for Bart Cummings; while the
Colin Hayes-trained Desirable (Aus) (Without Fear {Fr}) became
a rare two-year-old filly to score at weight-for-age when
20-year-old New South Welsh apprentice Malcolm Johnston
rode her at a nowadays-unimaginable 43 kilos in 1976.
In 1987 Placid Ark (Aus) (Arkenstone {Aus}) became the first
horse to complete the Lightning Stakes / Oakleigh Plate /
Newmarket Handicap treble, thus earning Horse of the Year
Honours. Cont. p3
NY-BRED MOANIN SETS FEBRUARY S. RECORD New York-bred Moanin (Henny Hughes) won for the sixth time
in seven career outings, establishing a new Tokyo track record in
taking out Sunday’s G1 February S. by 1 1/4 lengths from
favored Nonkono Yume (Jpn) (Twining). Asukano Roman (Jpn)
(Agnes Digital) was another head back in third and narrowly
ahead of Best Warrior (Majestic Warrior) in fourth.
Favored in each of his six previous trips postward, Moanin, a
$90,000 graduate of the 2013 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Sale
at Saratoga, breezed an eighth of a mile in :10 flat and was
hammered down to Emmanuel de Seroux’s Narvick
International for $335,000 at the 2014 OBS March sale. De
Seroux was doing his bidding on behalf of his client Yukio Baba,
who 12 months earlier had bid $230,000 through de Seroux for
another colt by Henny Hughes. Cont. p4

RYAN EXACTA IN ST MORITZ Michael Ryan, a Waterford based breeder and property
developer enjoyed his day in sunny St. Moritz on Sunday when
his homebred Eagle Valley (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) lead
home fellow Ryan homebred Duchess Andorra (Ire) (Duke Of
Marmalade {Ire}) to give the owner a 1-2 in the Grand Prix
Schlossatelier over four furlongs on the snow. The winner is
trained by Curragh based Tracey Collins and was ridden by
Ronan Whelan and celebrations in Switzerland were likely to be
lively if the owner/breeder is
true to form. Ryan is best
known for topping the Orby
Yearling Sale when his
homebred Ol’ Man River (Ire)
(Montjeu {Ire}) fetched
€2.85m at Goffs in 2013.
Bought by MV Magnier, the
colt, out of Ryan’s Classic
winner Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr
Greely) won the G2 Beresford
S. as a juvenile. A year later, also at Goffs, Ryan had further
cause for celebration when a Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) filly foal
out of Finsceal Beo made €1.8m when bought by Dermot
Farrington at the November Sale.
Ryan has enjoyed great success as an owner; in addition to the
exploits of Finsceal Beo who won three Group 1 races when
trained by Jim Bolger, Ryan also owned the prolific winning
hurdler Al Eile (Ire) (Alzao). This homebred, trained in County
Waterford by Ryan’s neighbour John Queally, won five Grade 1
hurdles including the prestigious G1 Aintree Hurdle on three
occasions. Such was Ryan’s affinity with the horse that he
named his stud after him. Michael Ryan also has the distinction
of standing a homebred stallion at his Al Eile Stud. Finsceal Fior
(Ire) (Galileo {Ire}–Finsceal Beo (Ire), by Mr Greely), a 6-year-old,
was unraced due to injury but his pedigree is top class and his
first crop are due to hit the track this year.
The TDN has solicited the opinions of some prominent figures on
the European bloodstock scene to answer three questions about
the upcoming Flat season. Today’s installment features the
thoughts of Sonia Rogers of Airlie Stud.
1) Horse you are most looking forward to seeing this season?
Jack Hobbs (Halling), because I think he will make a good 4 y.o.
He had a long season last year, winning the Irish Derby and
being 2nd to Golden
Horn in the English
Derby. He was a top 3
y.o. and is trained by a
master. Also his sire
Halling, who died
recently was very under
rated.
2) A stallion who could
feature prominently (doesn’t have to be first season)?
Zoffany, he has two 2.y.o.'s in the top twenty, a colt and a filly -
Foundation and Illuminate.
3) Positive change you would like to see for the industry in
2016?
I would like to see the number of mares bred to each stallion
each year be limited to 140. This could only be beneficial to the
breeder and also long term to the stallion.

Lightning Hero on Ascot Radar cont. from p1
Special (Aus) (Habituate {Ire}) chased him home in that Lightning
Stakes before winning the race the following year in the record
time of 55.5. Shaftesbury Avenue (Aus) (Salieri) took the
Lightning Stakes in the same year (1991) in which he won the G1
Caulfield Stakes over 2000m and finished third in the G1 Japan
Cup over 2400m.
Schillaci (Aus) (Salieri), winner of the Lightning Stakes in 1992
and '93, was a superstar; while Mahogany (Aus) (Last Tycoon
{Ire}), who won it in 1994 and '96 (aged four and six
respectively), was a champion in the Sky High mould, having
won both the VRC Derby over 2500m and the AJC Derby over
2400m at three.
These champions, though, received minimal international
recognition. The situation changed utterly, however, when
Choisir (Aus) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) won the King's Stand Stakes
at Royal Ascot in June 2003 at
25/1. Who was this massive
chestnut upstart, English
race-goers asked, and what
had he won? Well, he
appeared to have won a race
called the Lightning Stakes at
Flemington four months
previously.
Subsequently, the Lightning
Stakes continued to loom
ever larger on the international radar. Its 2005 winner Fastnet
Rock (Aus) (Danehill) came to England later in the year, but
travel sickness prevented him from lining up at Royal Ascot.
Next came Takeover Target (Aus) (Celtic Swing {GB}), Miss
Andretti (Aus) (Ihtiram {Ire}) and Scenic Blast (Scenic {Ire}) who
all completed the Lightning Stakes / King's Stand Stakes double
(in 2006, '07 and '09 respectively).
Black Caviar has subsequently become the only horse to win
three Lightning Stakes (2011, '12 and '13). The extent to which
the international sprinting landscape had changed in merely a
decade is shown by the fact that when Choisir had scored at
Royal Ascot as the reigning Lightning Stakes winner, he had done
so at 25/1--but when Black Caviar followed up her 2012
Lightning victory with triumph at Royal Ascot, she did so as the
1/6 favourite.
Connections of this year's Lightning Stakes hero Chautauqua
(Aus) (Encosta De Lago {Aus}) are currently being courted by
Ascot's representative Nick Smith, who was at Flemington to see
the grey five-year-old gelding win a thrilling race by a centimetre
or two. Even though putting a Royal Ascot victory on the CV
holds most appeal financially for prospective stallions, there is
still plenty of incentive to travel a gelding (as Takeover Target
and Scenic Blast reminded us) particularly as the Lightning
Stakes is the first leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, which series
makes a million-dollar bonus available for international high
achievement.
The irony is that, while the record books show that
Chautauqua is the winner of Australia's premier 1000m
weight-for-age race, he is far from an undisputed champion.
Would runner-up Terravista (Aus) (Captain Rio {GB}) have
beaten him if ridden more vigorously over the last 150m?
Probably. Would fourth-placed Exosphere (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus})
have beaten them both but for the bizarre decision to race him
down the far side of the track (bearing in mind that a
two-year-olds' Listed race earlier in the afternoon had been
dominated by two of the only three horses to come to the
stands' side)? Very possibly.
Chautauqua, though, has his name in the record books and
this, his third Group One victory, ranks as his best to date. He is
now clearly the most distinguished member of his family, having
surpassed the achievements of his dam Lovely Jubly (Aus) (Lion
Hunter {Aus}). Her biggest payday came when she landed the
Magic Millions Two-Year-Olds Classic at the Gold Coast in 2002,
although her most prestigious victories came later that season
when she completed Brisbane's G1 juvenile double of T. J. Smith
Classic and QTC Sires' Produce Stakes.
Overall, this is a decent family of good, professional racehorses
who have compiled solid
racing records on either side
of the Tasman Sea. Lovely
Jubly was one of two Group
winners produced by her dam
Jaboulet (NZ) (Vice Regal
{NZ}), along with Sir Howard
(Aus) (Alannon {Aus}) who
scored at Group Two level in
New Zealand. The multiple winners just a bit farther back in the
pedigree include Real Vision (NZ) (Vision Quest {NZ}) who won
11 races including the Winter Cup at Riccarton, and Royal Dell
(NZ) (Royal Ridge {Fr}) who scored 10 times and was placed in
both a Wellington Cup and a New Zealand Cup. That
Chautauaqua and Lovely Jubly both became specialist sprinters
speaks volumes for the influence of their sires, the excellent
Encosta De Lago (Aus) (Fairy King) and the ill-fated Lion Hunter

(Aus), a very fast horse whose sire Danehill and dam Pure Of
Heart (Ire) (Godswalk) were both top-class sprinters.
The thoroughly admirable Chautauqua, who was passed in at
$300,000 at Inglis' 2012 Easter Yearling Sale when he was
offered with a $400,000 reserve, should certainly be tough
enough to cope with the challenge of a trip to Royal Ascot--and
he might also be good enough to complete this mighty double.
February S. cont. from p1
That purchase, subsequently named Asia Express, would cap a
perfect three-race campaign with a victory in the G1 Asahi Hai
Futurity en route to divisional honors in Japan and graced the
cover of the 2014 March catalogue.
Settled in mid-division for the opening stages after jumping
from gate 14, Moanin pulled Mirco Demuro into a forward
position about three wide with some cover entering the turn.
Traveling well in
upper stretch, the
4-1 chance came
off heels, hit the
front 200 meters
from home and
was never in
serious danger as
Nonkono Yume
made some late
headway. The final
time of 1:34 set a
new course record.
“I was aware of his strength and had every confidence in him
so I’m truly happy we were able to win,” said Mirco Demuro.
“The trainer warned me of his bad breaks, but he actually
jumped fine and after we were positioned well, I knew the title
was ours. I’m glad that he stretched well in spite of losing
concentration a bit after taking the lead rather early in the
straight,” added the Italian rider.
Moanin is one of three of his dam’s produce to be domiciled in
Japan, joining the 5-year-old Cosmo Zig (Stephen Got Even) and
3-year-old Niagara Roll (Bluegrass Cat). Giggly is the dam of the
2-year-old filly Silly Sister (Broken Vow), but passed away in
2015 at the age of 10.

CLASSIC CUP LIVES UP TO ITS NAMEby Alan Carasso
What promised to be a contentious renewal of the Hong Kong
Classic Cup, the middle leg of the 4-year-old series, proved to be
that and a whole lot more. No fewer than five horses came from
any part of the track to settle the finish, with Sun Jewellery
(Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) finding the line just ahead of hot favorite
Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) under yet another masterful piece
of reinsmanship from Ryan Moore.
The questions heading in to Sunday’s feature were many.Could Sun Jewellery and Blizzard (Aus) (Starcraft {NZ}) continueto defy their speedier pedigrees and see out this 1800m trip?Would Werther cement a spot at the top of the division off hisrunner-up effort behind Sun Jewellery in the Classic Mile Jan.24? Was Giovanni Canaletto (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})’s solid finish inthe Classic Mile a fluke or a harbinger of things to come? IsEastern Express (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), rated just 81, really

this good? There were answers to be found after 108 fascinatingseconds on an overcast afternoon in the New Territories. Green Dispatch (War Front) won the break and, with blinkerson, raced freely to set the pace in advance of Eastern Express, the rare 4-year-old with a win over the course and distance--
albeit in Class 3. SunJewellery, drawn three, and odds-on Werther, who left gate six, racedtogether from midfield, with Hugh Bowmantracking his market rivaland seemingly holding allthe cards from a tacticalstandpoint. The outposted
Blizzard raced deep for the opening 600 meters, but GeraldMosse ultimately allowed him to stride along to be a forwardfactor from third, a decision that ultimately would allow thegelding to play a role in the finish. Green Dispatch continued to bowl along up front, but the plotwas thickening behind, as Bowman pulled Werther into thethree path, but was flushed deeper by California Disegno (Ire)(Fastnet Rock {Aus}) while Moore followed the move of Blizzardinto the stretch, able to save some ground. A spot to the insideof Werther failed to materialize for Sun Jewellery, but one didunderneath Eastern Express, who had taken over with a furlongto race. With Moore hard at work, his legs swinging in the irons,Sun Jewellery fought on gamely at the rail and managed to gethis nose down ahead of Werther for a second straight time. Thecamera could not split Eastern Express and Blizzard for third, while Giovanni Canaletto and Friends of Ka Ying (Aus) (Al Maher{Aus}) got home eye-catchingly from the tail of the field to sealtheir spots in the 2000-meter Hong Kong Derby. Sun Jewellery isthe first since Floral Pegasus (Aus) (Fusaichi Pegasus) tocomplete the Classic Mile/Classic Cup double. No horse hasswept the series, which concludes with the HK$18-million(US$2.3 million) domestic centerpiece Mar. 20. “He’s got an awful lot of courage,” said Moore, “and that--aswell as his attitude--are the two things that stand out about himmost. I did always feel that I was going to get up. Wertherstarted moving early and I wanted to keep tabs on him--he gotaway from me a bit but my horse dug in very well.” It was the third Classic Cup score in the last four seasons fortrainer John Size. “Like most good horses he does a lot of things right and histemperament helps him a lot,” said Hong Kong’s seven-timechampion trainer. “He’s manageable in a race and he’sdetermined in a finish, so all those attributes you’d love to havein any horse.”

TJ SMITH NEXT UP FOR EXOSPHERE Trainer John O’Shea plans to give Exosphere (Aus) (Lonhro
{Aus}) a short break following his close up fourth to Chautauqua
(Aus) (Encosta De Lago {Aus}) in Saturday’s G1 Black Caviar
Lightning S. at Flemington. O’Shea will target the G1 TJ Smith S.
at Randwick April 2 with the Godolphin Group 1 winner and was
ruing the tactics employed on Saturday feeling it was the
difference between winning
and losing. “He jumped left
and then he sort of got
following Va Pensiero (Aus)
(Stratum {Aus}), who was
always going to be the early
speed and by the time he
looked up and realised the
chances had gone to the
other side and it was game over,” O’Shea told racing.com. “I was
very proud of the horse, but I think tactically we come up short.
I’d say there was probably a two to four length disparity
between the inside and the outside at Flemington on Saturday. I
don’t think that’s unrealistic. We’ll bring him home now and run
him on tracks where the bias doesn’t have a major impact on
where we finish,” the trainer concluded.
