5Director’s Notes

VBS 2016 Director’s Notes Music can lead a child to the foot of the cross. I’ve seen it happen. For one girl I know, now a beautiful young woman, she was oblivious to the gospel message until she rehearsed music for our church Christmas program. While singing “Good Christian Men, Rejoice,” this girl pondered the phrase, “Now ye need not fear the grave.” She wondered if it was truly possible to be unafraid of death. The Holy Spirit convicted her heart of her need for Jesus, and she gave her life to Him not long afterward. We have a tremendous opportunity in front of us. Some children who may never pick up the Bible can have the truth of His Word introduced to their hearts and minds through thoughtful words, fun melodies and catchy rhythms. Leading out in music can and will have an impact on young hearts for eternity. You are an invaluable part of the Lord’s work. Have fun, praise our Savior and your joy will be contagious to these precious children!

Here Come the Conquerors Motions are fun and easy with this tune, and it will get the blood pumping! At the opening line, “Lift your head up to the sky,” have the children look up and shade their eyes as if looking into the sun. At “zooming in,” imitate a plane with arms outstretched. “Adventure calls” is shown by cupping their hands around their mouths like they are shouting. The students should pump their fists in the air and shout, “Let’s go!”

Every time the word “conquerors” is sung, children should place their hands on their hips and strike a superhero stance.

When singing, “There’s not a thing to keep us down,” the children should slowly lower themselves to a squatting position and slowly rise up during “we’re rising straight up off the ground.”

During the bridge, keep the conqueror pose until the group sings, “No enemy can stand against us.” Hold up hand, palms facing outward and push as if trying to push an attacker away.

At the end of the song, children should mimic the motion of a speeding jet with their hands at “Zoom!” yank their hands back into a fist at “Chug!” and push their hands forward, palms out when they sing “Splat!” These words paint the picture of the airship used in the VBS theme.

Shaken Up The part of this song children will love is the “shaken up” moments. Have them shake their hands in rhythm and move their hands upward by increments when chanting “up, up, up, up.” You could even ask the students to knock their knees together as if afraid while shaking their hands if they can pull it off without falling over.

When singing, “When I want to hide,” children should wrap their arms over their heads as if afraid and then move their hands into fists placed over their hearts when they sing, “I will abide.”

When the “shaken up” section repeats at the end, you may also have the students stomp in coordination with the “up, up, up, up” rhythm.

T-R-U-S-T Before starting this song, collect eleven pieces of heavy cardstock or other stiff paper and on each one, using a Sharpie, write just one letter: T, R, U, S, T, A, F, R, A, I, D. Distribute these letters to designated children, lining them up in order to spell the words of the song.

During the chorus, have the appropriate child hold up the sign for his letter when singing either “T-R-U-S-T” and “A-F-R-A-I-D.” Children love having the responsibility of being the letter guy and the task will get harder as the song speeds up! The rest of the children can easily act out the motions of this fun tune. While singing, “When giants come and scare me,” have students lumber side to side, arms outstretched until they come to “have me shaking in my boots.” They can then knock their knees together and look afraid. Likewise, at “I won’t run,” have them place their hands on their hips in a show of courage and cross their arms over their hearts during “my God is with me.”

Songbook6

After singing, “When giants roar,” the children love to roar as loud as they can and then mimic a giant crumpling over. Add in whatever motions that work best for your group.

I Will Call on Jesus This song has a distinct Israeli feel to it, so using light instruments like shakers would work very well. These can either be store-bought or made during craft time using emptied medicine bottles, Tic Tac boxes or other small containers and filling them with dry rice, uncooked beans and so forth.

Take a Stand When singing, “pull you down,” have the children hunch their shoulders and then raise their hands in a questioning gesture when they come to “Who will you listen to?” Mimic the action of ripping something away from another’s hands at “steal that toy.”

Have one child or an adult speak or sing the phrase, “Is that true?” Students should shake their heads and shout “No!” before giving a thumbs down and booing Satan.

Every time the students sing, “peer pressure,” have them lean in, pressing in to the center of the group as if squeezing the middle. Just make sure the children in the middle are not actually suffocating from overly enthusiastic children.

At the end of the chorus, have the children slowly bow at “Don’t bow down” and then stand quickly to their feet and strike a soldier like pose at “Worship God and take a stand.”

Mimic the same action the children used at “peer pressure” when they sing “don’t give in to the crowd.”

God of the Impossible Way This song would benefit from the use of sticks ministry. If you’ve never used this approach before, it’s fairly simple. Each child gets two dowel rods and then uses the sticks to act out the motions of the song. Some churches even spray paint their dowel rods white and use a black light for special effect. If you search “stick ministry,” you will get hundreds of links to videos using them in a variety of ways.

If sticks ministry isn’t a good fit for your church (or if you fear sticks in the hands of rambunctious children would lead to an ER visit), these motions can just as easily be adapted by using arms.

“Sensational”—arc sticks overhead, bringing them slowly down on either side of the body.“Unforgettable”—hold arms on either side of the body (resembling the cross) and slowly bring them toward the center, arms straight.“Obey”—cross sticks over the heart, close to the chest.“Unstoppable”—step one foot forward, holding the sticks out, arms straight and in an X.“Don’t let fear take hold of you”—make small spiral motions above the head, lowering the arms slowly, keeping the circular motion going.“Obey”—cross sticks over the heart, close to the chest.“Courage”—points stick out straight ahead, arms straight and parallel.“Encouragement”—slowly raise sticks to the ceiling from the courage position.“Discouraged”—lower sticks to either side of the body, hanging low. Children should slightly bow their heads.“Predicament”—slowly raise right hand and then the left to chest level.“God”—point sticks overhead in a V.“Impossible”—hold stick in front of the chest in an X.“Way”—sticks out parallel and forward, arms straight.“Trust”—get down on one knee, sticks at their sides.“Obey”—cross sticks over the heart, close to the chest.“You will see”—raise face to the sky, keeping the sticks crossed over the chest.“What God does when you believe”—quickly rise to standing.

Repeat motions as necessary.

Theme Song

Here Come the Conquerors

Lift your head up to the sky. We’re zooming in and flying highAdventure calls, let’s go!Here come the conquerors!

There’s not a thing to keep us down. We’re rising straight up off the ground. The Son is calling out,Here come the conquerors!

More than conquerors through Him who loved us.No enemy can stand against us.More than conquerors through Him who loved us.Conquerors through Jesus.

Lift your head up to the sky. We’re zooming in and flying high.Adventure calls, let’s go!Here come the conquerors!

There’s not a thing to keep us down. We’re rising straight up off the ground! The Son is calling out,Here come the conquerors!

Adventure calls beyondWe’re growing strong, Zoom! Chug! Splat! Here come the conquerors!

Shaken Up

Shaken up, shaken up, shaken up, up, upShaken up, shaken up, shaken up, up, upShaken up, shaken up, shaken up, up, upShaken up, shaken up, shaken up.

Abide, abide, whatever comes my way And when I want to hide, I will abide.Abide, abide, fear will run away,’Cause Jesus lives inside, I will abide.

So when I’m shaken up, shaken up, shaken up,I will just look up, just look up, just look up.My help comes from the Lord,The maker of Heaven and earth,

So when I’m shaken up, shaken up, shaken up,I will just look up, just look up, just look up.I look to Jesus who rescues me.Abide, abide, whatever comes my way and

When I want to hide I will abide.Abide, abide, fear will run away’Cause Jesus lives inside, I will abide.’Cause Jesus lives inside, I will abide.
