Hi Members and Friends,
Gilli Moon here, President of Songsalive!, and fellow songwriter just like you. A
little change and good stuff for all of you. Please take a minute (or two) to read
my little note, and hopefully you'll discover some gifts and jewels...
Since 1997, Songsalive! is the largest international non-profit membership
organization and social community for songwriters and composers. We are
dedicated to the nurturing, support, education and promotion of songwriters and
composers worldwide. There's nothing like us. Seriously.
Recently we've made some significant changes to our
website (www.songsalive.org), and we want to share them with you. Our goal is to
create a better user experience with our site, with easier navigation and update to
our programs; as well as build our membership base which helps us grow and
survive as a non-profit organization.
So, the first thing we needed to do was increase our membership rate to $65 a
year, (the first 15 years, we kept our membership rates low ($40-$50). We have
finally had the need to increase our Pro Membership fee to $65 (for New Members
only) to cover our non-profit operational costs. Anyone who joined as a Pro
Member before June 19, 2014 at the $50 rate, and who keep their subscription
active, will remain at $50. Coolness. And for those who've been at the free level,
we hope you've enjoyed feeling out what we do and enjoying the community.
For all of you, we want to give you an amazing NEW list of opportunities and
experiences for you as a songwriter and your songs. That's what we are here
for. You. Plus, we realize that membership needs to be for all types of music
aficianados: singers, musicians, even music industry professionals. The focus, as
always, is about THE SONG.
The Bonus is, for a limited time (just the month of July), we are offering anyone
who isn't a Pro Member yet to join at 50% off (offer ends August 1 so
hurry). Woot! Yep, you get everything we offer, at 50% off. Click here to
join/upgrade: Join as a Pro Member for just $65/year
And until August 1, join at 50% off. (discount will remain in effect as long as you

For those who are new to us, and even those who are already Pro Members, here
are some of our member benefits: we'll go into what's new, and what's changed
(well, for the newbies, it's all new to you!). By joining Songsalive!, you and your
songs are reaching the world stage. Maximize your songwriting career and join
today.
Just so you all know, even though I started this little puppy, 17 years ago, I'm still a
volunteer, like my team mates. We are all songwriters, volunteering to provide
member benefits, programs and services, just for you. I hope that makes you feel
warm and fuzzy.
For Songwriters: Your Membership provides important songwriting craft
and business programs and services that are often lacked in the

Artists, Light and HorsesBy Gilli Moon
One of your thoroughbreds is biting at the bit at the starting gate. She’s really
testy, and wants to start the race. Salivating at the mouth, eyes zealous, mind
going a hundred miles an hour. But the gun has not gone off. There is no start.
She realizes she’s not alone. There are six, maybe ten, other horses also at the
gate, desperate to start: hooves kicking the dust, rump hitting the sides of the
barrier, leg muscles twitching.
Restless…
Then you realize, all of these thoroughbreds are yours. You own all these
horses, and they are all ready to go, as soon as the mark is heard. They’re all
biting at the bit, ready. A few false starts, and back into the barriers. Still, it’s a
waiting game.
Do you ever feel like this? Do you ever feel like the thoroughbred inside you just
wants to get out there and on with it? Are you feeling restless, frustrated,
anxious, and yet: full of energy, desire, passion and ambition?
Do you have too many horses at the starting gate? Are all your
projects/desires/dreams at the forefront of your starting gate ready to be
unleashed? Do you feel like you have false starts and then you’re back at the
starting gate, once again kicking your hooves into the dirt?
You are not alone.
The conundrum of the new creative entrepreneur is that we are not only
passionate and ambitious as the ‘creator’, but also carrying the load of the
‘business startup owner’. You have to do it all, don’t you?
You may also just be that A-type personality who has so many ideas, and you
want to do them all. Now. Or, you just know that inside you, your artistic light
just wants to shine and it deserves to be heard.
Ambition is a curse and a blessing. It provides a wonderful kick in the pants to
make you not only believe you can “do it”, but gives you impetus to get on with
it. But it can also be a detriment. Because you want your light to shine so much,
you can get frustrated if the opportunities and successes don’t come fast
enough. That thoroughbred of yours kicks its hoofs in frustration, eyes jealous of
the next one next to you “making it”.
I have often wondered if my life had turned out differently. If, at the age of 18,
when I felt the ambition rising in my soul, I was “discovered” by a record
company, developed and marketed to the point of, perhaps, top 40 hits, number
one songs, Grammy awards and worldwide acclaim. I mean, my ego could
easily accept that, right? My ego’s ambition certainly saw it that way. But my
road was very different. I couldn’t wait for someone to come along and
determine my fate: I took the ball in my own hands and created my own record
company and distribution channels, thereby circumventing the “system”, using
guerilla marketing tactics and making a go of it on my own. I call it my “warrior
path”. Success? Damn right. It’s my definition of success. Honestly, if I’d waited
around thinking I could be “discovered”, that artist light inside me would have
been extinguished.
The artist’s light is always there. Your creativity, your inner talent, your mission,
your essence. While you are waiting for that long term goal to realize; while you
are working on your big opus, don’t forget to continue to nurture your light.

Artists, Light and Horses (continued)
In fact, artistry is a life long journey – it’s about the day to day process. Let your light emanate on a daily basis, even if, in your heart, you’re
waiting for that “big thing”. Getting to that big dream takes a while, to do it right. And often it turns out differently than you initially expected,
which is OK. Maybe, just maybe, you might discover that the little things you achieve, are way cooler than that vision of what that “big thing”
may be, or never be.
Many artists who get the Grammy, or actors who get an Oscar, ask themselves, “what next?”
You see, once you get some kind of recognition, or reach a milestone, you’ll only want MORE. What’s next, what else? And even worse,...”is
this all there is?”
Don’t be deceived by the Holy Grail, that magical destination you’ve set your sights on. Yes, the grass is always greener, they say, but let’s just
imagine the grass is green right where you are, right here and now, right with what you have in your hands.
Take a look at your thoroughbreds right now. Go pat your favorite one, and give it some hay and water. Give it the love and power. Focus on
that talent of yours, and find little wins you can appreciate on a daily basis. They are the ones you’ll look back which will create a sea of wins in
your life, and that is a life well lived.
Go shine your light!
~ love and light, gilli moon

Chicago Songsalive! May Workshop - Chicago Songsalive! hosted another
songwriters workshop on May 10th at the Beat Kitchen. One attendee, Neil
FitzPatrick, performed his song for critique. It was a well-written indie/folk/rock
song about finding yourself and finding your way. The guest speaker was
Vice-President of CHIRP Radio, Micha Ward. He talked about the history of
low power FM and how after many years of trying to get legislation passed to
open up the frequencies to non-commercial educational broadcasters, the
legislation was finally passed in 2010 and signed into law in 2011. Micha also
talked about what that means for musicians trying to get their music out to a
larger audience. CHIRP Radio is currently an Internet radio station, but is in
the process of becoming a low power FM station. -Mary Lemanski
Orange County Songsalive! Showcase - In spite of fires and firey heat,
music continues in Southern California! Mike V returned to Sam Ash Music
Store in Westminster, this time with his new band Red Shift Echo. The base
and drum player fit right in with Mike’s tried and true blues-rock style, and he
of course belted out his well-known songs with a passion. The Conlons were
up next, with a more acoustic sound but no less passion. As usual their
playing and singing fit together flawlessly, even as Doug Conlon switched to
various instruments as they went along. Several of the performers brought
along members of their families, which we always highly recommend — it
helps to fill up your audience, and that looks good! Bring the spouse and kids!

Los Angeles Songsalive! May Showcase – It was an emotionally
charged night as we honored our late songwriter friend D.Whitney
Quinn. Performances were a high with Patricia Bahia, Dharmika,
Debbie Opp, J.Walker, gilli moon, and Jimi Yamagishi. Special
appearances from songwriters who sang in tribute to Whitney in the
open mic section was a lovely feeling, especially Craig Harris, who
wrote more than 30 songs with Whitney and sand a touching co-write.
Tom Bishel also gave us his sensitive rendition of a Neil Finn song,
plus we enjoyed newcomer Katie Scarlett, backed by Grammy award
songwriter and Songsalive! patron, Alan Roy Scott. Paul McCarty
also sang a lovely Whitney song too. Lovely night, lovely venue, lovely
and touching showcase. Thanks to Songnet for collaborating with

NEWSChicago Songsalive! June Workshop - On June 14, Chicago Songsalive!hosted another songwriters workshop at the Beat Kitchen. Songsalive!Chicago host, Mary Lemanski, performed her alt-rock song, “Pretty Pictures,”on guitar. The song was well-received, and she got some helpful feedback.Songsalive! PRO Member, Greg Giebler, performed an incredibly amazingcountry song that he had written with his sister for his mother’s birthday, entitled “The Quilt.” It told the story of all of the patches in a patchwork quiltand the significance of each one. It was a very touching song about hismother’s life. Wonderful workshop! -Mary Lemanski
Los Angeles Songsalive! June Workshop - The Los Angeles chapter ofSongsalive! Workshop series continued on Sunday, June 15th at TheCahuenga General Store with long time professional and award winningsongwriter, Alan Roy Scott. Alan guided the songwriter audience through an11 songs critique offering each songwriting a chance to sit down and get afirsthand, in depth perspective on how to improve their songs while focusingon his topic of Craft Still Matters.
Orange County Songsalive! June Showcase - Two veterans of our stagereturned to entertain Sam Ash Music at our monthly Songsalive! OrangeCounty Songwriter Showcases. Both of them have joined us several timesbefore and once again they did not disappoint the crowd! R. Scott began withhis patented combination of roadhouse piano and soulful R & B, his growltaking us through a roller coaster of loss, longing, and redemption. MichaelVanags came up next with his beautiful Taylor guitar, giving us a set of chattyyet heart-felt songs about real people — and Michael himself there, chattingbetween those songs ABOUT those real people, letting us know exactly whomit was he was singing about. He even phoned a lady-friend — from the stage— and left her voice-mail letting her know that he was premiering a brand newsong about her for us. The crowd was tickled. -Rod O’Riley
Orange County Songsalive! June Workshop - …The discussion for theevening, as with last month, dovetailed off of Pat Pattison’s excellent book“Songwriting Without Boundaries”. In this case we spent time discussing theconcept of metaphor in your lyrics, and the possibilities it opens up. Webrought in some of our favorite examples of songs where something is used torepresent something else. Songs like “Fishing” by Richard Shindell, wherefishing becomes an allegory for a frightening interrogation. Or the grand-daddyof them all, “American Pie” by Don McClean, where EVERYTHING stands forsomething else — and there are college courses to help you figure out what.Metaphor not only brightens your lyric, but it opens up endless possibilities. -Rod O’Riley
