THE VALUE OF SONiCBuilt on top of the popular Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI) specification for common APIs, SONiC is a fully open-sourced, hardware-agnostic network operating system (NOS), perfect for preventing vendor lock-in and serving as the ideal NOS for next-generation data centers. SONiC is built over industry-leading open source projects and technologies such as Docker for containers, Redis for key-value database, or Quagga BGP and LLDP routing protocols. It’s modular containerized design makes it very flexible, enabling customers to tailor SONiC to their needs. MELLANOX OPEN ETHERNET SOLUTIONS AND SONiCMellanox pioneered the Open Ethernet approach to network disaggregation. Open Ethernet offers the freedom to use any software on top of any switches hardware, thereby optimizing utilization, efficiency and overall return on investment (ROI). Mellanox has been an active supporter of Open Ethernet activities such as ONIE, SAI and SONiC as part of OCP and ODCC networking group activities, and deeply involved in the development of SAI. Moreover, as a key contributor to the SONiC OS feature set, Mellanox delivers value to all SONiC layers, therefore, holding unique expertise and the ability to deliver with SONiC.

WHY MELLANOX SPECTRUM AND SONiC?Mellanox’s Spectrum SN2000 switch platforms leverage the advantages of open network disaggregation and the Spectrum ASIC, providing high bandwidth, zero packet loss switching and consistent low latency to meet the growing demands of today’s cloud networks. Spectrum enhances the value of SONiC via a set of unique features including:

SONiC – Software for Open Networking in the Cloud, is a Microsoft-driven open-source network operating system (NOS), delivering a collection of networking software components aimed at scenarios where simplicity and scale are the highest priority.

Mellanox Spectrum family of switches combined with SONiC deliver a performant Open Ethernet data center cloud solution with monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.

Mellanox Spectrum Switches: Ideal Spine and Top-of-Rack (ToR) SolutionsMellanox offers a range of spine and ToR switches that answers the needs of the modern data center, including compact half-width platforms that provide additional space and cost efficiencies built on high-performing silicon technology, robust designs and optimized port configurations enabling high-speed rack connectivity to any server, at any speed. Mellanox spine/ToR solutions deliver the lowest latency and highest density in switching, allowing the maximum flexibility and performance at any scale, with any desired blocking ratio.

Complete End-to-End Interconnect

As a true hardware innovation company, Mellanox is the only end-to-end technology vendor with its own unique silicon for Ethernet switches, network interface cards, cables, and transceivers. The engine for any Ethernet switch is the switching ASIC, and Mellanox’s Spectrum ASIC provides the predictable performance needed for modern data center infrastructures, with best-in-class latency, power consumption, and microburst absorption capabilities. Offering a complete solution comprising NICs, cables, transceivers, and switches, Mellanox provides the best gigabit per dollar value in the industry, and the best overall value proposition for hyperscale and cloud solutions.

INSTALLATIONMellanox SN2000 switches are shipped with built-in support for ONIE (Open Network Install Environment). Once the system boots, ONIE will connect to the management network, download SONiC NOS from a location it was pointed to, and install it. The following boot will load the operating system that was installed.
