Sonnet 116
by William Shakespeare
Let me not to the marriage of true mindsAdmit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O no! it is an ever-fixedmark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips andcheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come:
Love alters not with his brief hours andweeks,
But bears it out even to the edge ofdoom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

Theme of Shakespeares Sonnets
- stories about a handsome boy, or rival poet, and
the mysterious and aloof "dark" lady they bothlove.
Sequence of Shakespeares Sonnets
The sonnets fall into three clear groupings:
- Sonnets 1 to 126 are addressed to, or concern, a
young man;
- Sonnets 127-152 are addressed to, or concern, a
dark lady (dark in the sense of her hair, her facialfeatures, and her character)
- Sonnets 153-154 are fairly free adaptations of two
classical Greek poems.
- most popular Sonnets are Sonnets 018, 029, 116,
126 and 130.

1. You need 7 words (a1-g1) and you need to think of
interesting rhyming words (a2-g2) to each of them.
Lay them out like this on your notes:

2. Sometimes a writer finds that a
later quatrain or line is much stronger
than her first one. Feel free to move itto the start of the Sonnet. Keep
reorganizing the material if it helps
you come closer to what you feel and
believe and want to communicate.

3. Check that you have
followed all the features of
your form, thus proving thatyou have power over language
instead of it having power
over you.

4. As with all formal poemsnowadays, it is vital that the
form does not "drive" your poem.
If the rhyme scheme and form
begin to feel forced, then you
must assert the poem's content.Be friend with your dictionary!

5. Traditionally, you keep the same linelength throughout a Sonnet (unless you
are Gerald Manley Hopkins). The
traditional length centers around (but
does not obsessively lock-step with)
iambic pentameter in English. That gives
the rhythmic repetition that the ear
associates with music. It also gives apleasant appearance on the page.

6. Sometimes a writer varies linelengths in order to challenge the
listener's or reader's expectations:
that is fine if you do it deliberately.Just don't be lazy and cut lines short
or let them run long because you
can't be bothered to fix your poem'sproblems.

7. The less you follow a traditional
Sonnet form, the less you can claim
to have written a Sonnet. Again,
only break a form's rules becauseyou choose to, not because you lack
the skills and devotion to make
your poem work in a traditionalform.
