Soothing Touch began in 1977, in a small garage in Los Angeles, California. The late Yogi Bhajan (Founder), was a Kundalini Yoga teacher and master from India who had moved to the West to teach yoga, meditation, and healthy eating habits. His students were from all walks of life, and they were learning how to live the life of a householder and maintain their yogic lifestyle in an ashram / group environment. In their quest to find a way to support themselves, Yogi Bhajan gave them the formulas for ancient Ayurvedic oil blends that had been used for centuries in India for differentbody therapies. He knew the value and need for a high quality oil blend for the body and the impending popularity of the massage and holistic markets.

Thus began the business of Soothing Touch, very simply, with hopes that enough money could be generated to live on. Little did they know that the business would not only provide a small but steady income for a group of young, eager, starry-eyed yoga students, but also one day provide over 150 natural, premium quality massage and spa products for therapists and consumers around the world.

Over several decades, Soothing Touch continued to grow and prosper. They expanded their product offering to include Ayurvedic creams and lotions, topical pain relief gels, body butters, organic sugar and salt scrubs. The scrubs quickly grew to become some of the fastest selling items of their category in the US market.

Fast forward to December of 2006, Soothing Touch was sold to the current owners and the business was relocated, lock, stock and barrel, to Santa Fe, New Mexico - the Land of Enchantment. A new production facility was established and offices built from the ground up. What was about to take place was the rebirthing of a long for-gotten hidden jewel, Soothing Touch. Once the dust settled, the team was organized and we began the process of helping Soothing Touch realize its true potential.

Soothing Touch began in Los Angeles in the nineteen seventies, under the direction of Yogi Bhajan, a master of Kundalini Yoga. The Ayurvedic formulas for oil blends he brought with him from India had been used for centuries, and the mission of Soothing Touch was to make them available to us, too.

This is great news for me, my skin hates winter; between the cold outside and the heat indoors, it just seems to give up. It is not only uncomfortable, it also doesn’t do me any favors appearance-wise. I’m not interested in looking perpetually twenty, but I can’t pretend I’m not a little bit vain.

This winter I decided to try something new. Hari Kaur Khalsa of Soothing Touch helped me choose some wonderful oils, and suggested a simple morning routine to wake up my skin: one, yoga or any other kind of regular exercise; two, dry-brushing my skin, which helps with circulation; and three, a three-minute cold shower.

My first three-minute cold shower lasted about three seconds. It's a start. And really, the oil blend I used felt great. Hari says customers who try Soothing Touch products almost always come back for more, and I can understand why.

These oils are blends of sunflower, safflower, grape seed, avocado, apricot kernel and almond oils, plus natural vitamin E. They’re made in Santa Fe and distributed all over the world. Soothing Touch also makes fantastic bath salts, brown sugar scrubs, and lip balms, all using Ayurvedic recipes. They’re on sale this month, and Hari will be at Nob Hill on February 4th from 12-3pm, in Santa Fe on February 11th from 12-3pm, and at the Valley Co-op on February 25th from 12-3pm, so stop by and talk to her about how to make your own skin feel and look better. —Samantha Gill
