The Church and Theosophy.

Theosophy has gained consider-able headway in Honolulu and anumber of people have left theirrespective churches for the pur-pose of dipping into the mysteriesof the doctrines advanced by er-ratic women and cranks, WhiUwe don't beliovo that newspapersas a rule should tako up religiousmatters or open their columns forcontroversies on questions .of faith,we feel that under the presentpeculiar circumstances touchingon thejreligious life of the com-munity,.- that

it is the doty of allpeople interested in propagatingChristianity and Christian moral-ity to help in exposing all attackson those great principles in whatever shape such attacks may beadvanced.

A LIGHTNING DOCTOR.

We have often grumbled at theslowness with which doctors andInu-vor- s handle their clients. Thedoctors generally look wise forfive minutes, ask u lot offoolish (?) question for anotherfive minutes; make an examiuation and get on to some kind ofdiagnosis during the next fifteenminutes, prescribe medicine and ;

It is therefore, a great pleasureto note, that our judgement oftho averaga physician has beenwrong. There is a lightningdoctor in town now, and thepublic will muko his colleaguestoe the mark and cure the sick intho double quik time as used atthe dispensary.

According to tho statementat tho Board of Health yesterdaytho physician of the dispensarypresented the results of his workduring the quarter ending Sept.30th. We take the Advertiserreport:

Dr. Howard submitted a reportof tho Government Dispensaryfor the quarter ending-Septembe- r30th. In that time 3315 patientswere cared for an average ofabout 1100 a month. Ho mado300 house visits, issued 103health certificates ,.und performed103 successful vaccinations. Thodoctor's report gave much satisfaction to tho Board.

Wo should imagine, that theBoard of Health would be satis-fied. Tho doptor spends porhapsfour hours a day at the dispen-sary. With the figures advancedit shows, that ho has devoted lessthan 5 minutes to each patient.Besides that, ho hag yisited 300houses made 103 vaccination andof course given out tho ordinaryamount of medicine. His ownoffice hours detain him at hishomo about fours hour a day audit is to bo presumed that ho oc-casionally eats and sleeps.

Wo don't know tho gentleman,but we must say that he has ourunbounded admiration, and thatwo decidedly if sick, and in ahurry to got well, shall call onhim and try his lightningmethods.

The Church And Theosophy.

It being one of the espressduties of tho Bishop and Priestsof tho Church of Ch'isV'to boready with all faithful diligenceto banish and drive away all er-roneous and strange doctrinescontrary to God's Word," thetimo seems to havo come whouwo should bo justly chargeablewith negloct of duty, if throughwant of warning any should boled away from the Faith of theGospel by tho blind guesses ofTheosophy.

It is in a deep sense of thodanger of tho teaching to which,as it has seemed to us, unneces-sary prominence has of late beengiven by tho Press, that whatfollows is written; its dauger ly--mg in tho subtlety with whichtho anti-Christia- character oftho Theosophy now being pro-mulgated is veiled under tho

that no one is required toabandon the faith that be holdson becoming a member of theTheosophical Society.

I trust to make it clear to all(except thoso who wish.to bo de-ceived) that if any imagine thatthey can become members of theTheQSophical Society withoutparting company with tho Christ-ia-

in unraveling the mystery ofhuman existence be robbed of hisChristian Faith.

First of all. what is Theosonhv?Theosophy claims to be the know

ledge of God and of Divine thingsobtained by special illumination,which gives also the power ofpenetrating into many secrets ofnature. That is. it proposes with-out the aid of Revelation to drawaside the veil that hides from usthe mysteries of the unseenworld. 2owf however much wemay admire the efforts that havebeen made at various periodsamong non-Christ- ian peoples tosolve the mysteries of the Uni-verse, the system that have beenelaborated can add nothing towhat God has revealed to us inHis Holy Word. At best theyare but gropings after truth. Wewho have Theology have no needof Theosophy. Theology is theknowledge of God in His Beingand Attributes, as far as it haspleased Him to reveal Himself,and of the universe in relation toHim. It rests upon the clearlight of Bevelation, the record ofwhich is the Bible. For a Christ-ian therefore to suppose that hecan have a true guide to Truthm Theosophy-- , and abandon whathe has learned fromthe Word ofGod, is as irrational as it wouldbe for any ono in the study of thewujth's surface to repudiate geo-graphical science, and adopt theidea of the ancients that the earthis a plain with the ocean (lowinground it as a riev.

So far 1 have spoken of Theos-ophy in general, for there havebeen a great variety ot ineoscphical systems at different pe-riods, but our present concern iswith the system now being pro-mulgated. And the first point Ihave to show you is ihut directfalse hood is used in order to winattention to its doctrines. It ismaintained (1) that what istaught is of the very highest antiquity, and has been handeddown "from tho earliest times, and(2) that no one need give up hisChristian Faith by becoming amember of the Theosophical Society.

No doubt thos,o whq assertthese honestly believe them. Butthat does not make them lessfalse. In all ages false teachershave been deceived themselvesbefore t)oy set out to deceiveothers.

As to the first point, aro thogrounds on which antiquity isclaimed for the doctrines of Theo-sophy reliable or not? In supportof this pluim they point tp theKabbalah, ono of the sourcesfrom which their doctrines aredrawn, and assert that the teach-ing of the Kabbalah has beentransmitted interruptedly by themouths of patriarchs am pro-phets ever since the creation ofthe world, and was finally gathered by up a celebrated Rabbi in awork called Zohar in tho first cen-tury pf tbo Christian era. Butthis cannot bo uiaiiitajnec). jthas been proved that this workwhich pretends to have beencompiled at tho beginning of thoChristian era was not producedtill the beginning of t'h four-teenth eentuiy, and its pretendedcommunications ihade to Adam,and handed down by patriarchsand prophets are found to bo thomystical speculations of the Mid-dle Ages, palmed off on a credul-ous ago, uhen the Bible wss seal-ed up from the people in a deadlanguage, as the traditional Rev-elation made to mankind. Sumuch for the claim of antiquity.

As to the second pninp, the at-tempt to reconcile Theosophy andChristianity fails on the outset.In a pamphlet explaining thoposition of Theosophy, which be-gins wjth tho statement that aChristian is not required to giveup what he believes, the state-ment immediately follows that ofcourse ho wpuld havo to modifysome articles of tho orthodoxcreed. See what this apparentlymild demand amounts to. It is afundamental article of tho Christ-ian Faith that God has made Him-self known to man as One EtermllSpirit of infinite power, wisdomand goodness, the Maker andPreserver ot all things, both vis-ible and invisible, in the unity ofwhoso Godhead there aro ThreePersons of ono substance, powerand eteruitv, the Father, theSon, and the Holy Ghost. Thismust be modified. Theosopb-doe- s

not allow you to believe inOno to whom you may kneel andsay: "Our Father which art inheaven" Foritknowsno Per-sonal God. Tho God of Theoso-phy is impersonal, a Divine affla-tus, of which everything in natureand we oursolves are manifesta-tions.

With thisfirst modification of thefirst article of the Creed, there isno room left for she second whichwith the first, is tho foundationof tho Faith, viz , that in the per-son of Jesus Christ, tho SecondPerson of -- the Godhead becameincarnate, in order that afterleading a sinless life on earth,Ho might offer Himself a Per-fect Sacrifico for the sins of thewhole world, and so bring man-kind back to God from whomthey were separated by the fall,uniting all races in "UniversalBrotherhood with himself astheir Elder Brother both fortime and eternity. This faithcannot be retained, for lof aChrist, who is both God andman, Theosophy knows nothing.

The Christian Faith having

d sappeared under these modific-ations, the speculations as to thefuture substituted for the truth ofRevefatinn are of comparativelysmall importance.
