The Lycoming College Tour Choir Conducted by Dr. Fred Thayer, the Choir has been widely acclaimed as one of the finest college musical groups in the East. Since its inception in 1947 by Walter McIver, the Choir has presented concerts in every state east of the Mississippi River, California, Texas, Louisana, Canada, Puerto Rico and Europe. Foreign tours occur approximately every three years. A tour to Argentina is being planned for May, 2010. The Tour Choir is selected each year by competitive audition from the 105-voice College Choir, which is comprised of students from all academic fields. Forty students are chosen annually to perform in two weekend tours and a ten-day spring break tour. The spring 2010 ten-day tour will begin in York, PA, followed by concerts in North Carolina including Southern Pines, Pinehurst,

Indian Trail, Charlotte, Raleigh, Greenville and Beaufort. In May, the Tour Choir will tour four major cities in Argentina: Buenos Aires, Rosario, Córdoba and Mendoza. In its six decades of music, the Lycoming College Choir has performed hundreds of concerts including appearances at the National Cathedral, the Washington Shrine, the Crystal Cathedral, Coral Ridge, and New York City’s St. John the Divine and Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. The ensemble has sung with the Gregg Smith Singers, the Chieftains and Barry Manilow. The choir has been featured twice in the Holiday Celebrations at the White House. This spring, the choir is releasing its eighth CD, “O Gracious Light.” The Choir’s repertoire consists of both religious and secular music, ranging from contemporary to traditional. The Choir performs for all musical tastes, from listener to critic.

The Conductor and AccompanistsAs professor of music and director of choral activities at Lycoming College, Fred Thayer conducts three choirs: Lycoming College Choir (105 members), Chamber Choir (28 members), and Tour Choir (40 members). He is the recipient of Lycoming College’s Logan Richmond Professorship. Fred Thayer’s graduate degrees are in composition with

a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Cornell University, studying with Karel Husa and Robert Palmer. This year, as a member of ASCAP, he received his 26th annual ASCAP PLUS award. His compositions include two operas, three works for orchestra, two works for band and more than 75 choral works. Having a long association with the professional ensemble, the Gregg Smith Singers, Fred Thayer served as their associate conductor at the summertime Adirondack Festival of American Music in Saranac Lake, N.Y. for 23 years. The GSS and the Adirondack Chamber Orchestra jointly commissioned him to write ten works since 1982. Richard J. Lakey is currently the director of music at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Williamsport. He is a graduate of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ, where he received a Bachelor of Music Degree in Church Music. While at Westminster,

he was awarded the Alexander McCurdy Organ Scholarship, and through his music ministry has given numerous organ recitals. Lakey earned a Master of Music Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He has been a part-time instructor of organ and piano at Lycoming, and for the past 21 years has accompanied the Lycoming College Choir. In previous years, the Choir has performed his Te Deum and

several anthems. His Missa Brevis was performed by the Lycoming College Chamber Choir and the Gregg Smith Singers. Paraclete Press and Shawnee Press have published several of his compositions for choir. Lee Saville-Andree is an experienced solo, collaborative and ensemble pianist. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Susquehanna University,

specializing in piano. After graduating in 2007, Lee accepted a vocal/classroom music position in the Loyalsock Township Schools in Williamsport, PA. Last year, Lee conducted his high school choirs in a performance with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra. This is Lee’s third year as an accompanist for the Lycoming Choirs.

Music Department FellowshipsPerforming a diverse repertoire from vocal jazz to major works, the Chamber Choir is made up of Choral Fellowship recipients. Each member receives an annually renewable $500 tuition remission. By auditioning, students of all majors may qualify for this award.
