    BUILDINGTHEMODEL

    BeforeStarting

    Anoteaboutthephotos:Thephotosweretakenofaprototypeandthepartssuppliedmaylookslightlydifferentfromthem.However,theconceptsillustratedarethesame.

    TheSopwithCamelprototypeswerebuiltbySamLeonardandTimKwasny.Thefollowingisacompilationoftechniquesfromthemandotherbuilds.AerodromeRCappreciatesthecontributionsofthesetwobuilders.

    WINGS

    Buildthetopwinginonepiece.Notethatthetrailingedgesare1/32plywoodandaresuppliedinthekit.Theleadingedgesare1/8diameterwooddowels.Miniribsarealsoincluded.Putsmallscrappiecesof1/8balsaonthenotchesintheribsthataccepttheIPstrutstoserveasreinforcementsandasabaseforcoveringlater.

    Buildtheaileronsandsandtheleadingedgetoshape.

    Choosearoundedshapeforcenterhingingorabevelledshapefortophinging.

    Hereisthewingtip.

    Aileronservosareattachedwithshortthreadedrodsto

    theailerons.Aileronservosarefitinservocompartmentslocatedinthelowerwingswiththesupplied1/32plywoodservocovers.Routeservowiresthroughholesinlowerwingribs.UseaYwiringharnessconnectortowiretheservostoasingleradioconnection.Alternatively,twoRCchannelscanbeusedwhenmixedelectronically.Ifdifferentialaileronthrowsaredesired,rotateeachservohornforwardabout20degrees,whilemaintainingtheneutralpositionoftheaileron.Thisshouldcounteranyadverseaileronyaw.

    FUSELAGECONSTRUCTION

    Thefuselageisbuiltastwoseparateboxstructures,thefrontsheetareaandtherearbuiltupsection,whicharethenjoinedovertheplan.Thissystemnotonlykeepseachstagesimple,butitalsohelpstoensureastraightfuselage.Somemodelersprefertobuildeachsidecompletelyontheplanandthenjoinbothhalvesoverthetopview.Bothsystemshavetheiradvantagesanddrawbacks.Thefollowingisthefront/backmethod.

    Beginbybuildingtworearfuselageframesovertheplanandallowtodry.Selecthardbalsaorlaminatedbalsaforthelongerons.Adddiagonalsforarigidstructure.Repeatwiththeotherside.Somebuildersbuildthesecondsideoverthefirsttoinsuretheymatchperfectly.BesuretousewaxpaperorSaranWrapbetweentheseoryoullnotbeabletogetthemapart.Jointhesidesoverthetopviewoftheplanandaddthecrossmembersandtail

    skidmount.Checkandcheckagaintoinsurethatthestructureissquareandstraightoryouwillendupwithabananafuselage.Finallyaddthewedgeshapedhorizontalstabilizersupports.Waituntilthefrontfuselageisjoinedtoaddtheturtledeckformersandstringers.

    Buildthefronthalfanddecking

    Laythefrontsidesontheplanandgluethemtogether.Thealignmentnotchinsuresthattheymateproperly.Ontheoutsidesurfacesgluethe1/32plywooddoublers.Useaheavyweightandslowsettinggluelikeepoxy.Ifwaterbasedglueisused,warpingmayoccursoallowthegluetodryundertheweight.JointhesideswiththefrontF1andbackF5formersand1/8plyundercarriagemountcrossmembers.Addthedeckingandtopformers,andcarefullytrimtosizeandfit1/16sheeting.Thesidecheekscanbeaddedafterthefrontandbackofthefuselagearejoined.Smallpiecesof1/8balsaareaddednexttothecabanestrutsbeforecovering.ThemachinegunareaortheCamelsHumpismadefromlaminatedlasercut1/4balsasectionsJ1throughJ5.Gluethemtogetherasshownontheplanandsandtoanicesmoothshape.

    CabaneStruts

    Thecabanestrutsarefashionedusingbalsafairingsonlasercut1/8thickplywoodformers.Theformersaredesignedtomakealignmentofthetopwingeasy.Thetopofthecabanesformabarthatfitsintoslotsinthewing.Balsa,bassorscrapplywoodcanbeusedtofairthecabanes.

    LANDINGGEAR

    ThelandinggeararefashionedfromCAhardened1/8plywood.Sand,soakwiththinCAandthen,securely,epoxythegeartothemodel.0.045musicwireisusedtoreinforcethegear.UseKevlarthreadorstrongcarpetthreadandsecurethewirealongthegear.CAinplace.Ashockabsorbingmechanismhasbeendesignedtoletthemodelhavealittlegivewhenlanding.Attachthe3/32musicwireaxletothetopsideoftheLGcrossmemberwithKevlarthreadandepoxyinplace.Smallholesareplacedinthisparttofacilitatethelacingofthisthread.Addshortpiecesof1/8brasstubingasbearings/spacersforthewheels.Userubberbandstoactasshockabsorbersbutmakeeachsideexactlyastheoppositesite.Otherwise,theshockresistanceisunequalandyourmodelwillcanttoonesideoneverylanding.AddingKevlarcrossriggingwilldramaticallystrengthenthelandinggear.

    COVERING

    Anylightweightcoveringmaterialcanbeused.PolyspanwithdopeorMinwaxPolycrylicmakesagoodchoice,Litespanisalsopopular.

    WHEELS

    Gluingtheplysidesonthe3/8balsacoremakesthebasisforthewheels.Usethebrasshubforalignment.Epoxythehubsinplaceandaddasufficientamountofepoxyaroundthebaseofthehubtoreinforcetheconnectionofthehubtotheply.Plywoodreinforcinghubsareprovidedthataretoslipoverthebrasstubingasshown.Next,CAgluetheneoprenecordingtogethertofromatire.UsethinCAsparinglyastheCAbondsveryaggressivelytotherubber.PresstheCAwettedendstogetherforaninstantbond.Thebestwaytoaligntheendsistogluethemwhiletheyareinplaceonthewheel.ThenattachthetirestothewheelsandCAinplace.AthinbeadofCAaroundtherimmakesforasecuretire.

    Paperconesarecutout.Useaballpointpentoscoreeachlineonthebacktomakeanimpressionofspokes.Itishelpfultodothisoperationonapapertabletsothatthepenmakesagoodcrease.Foldthepaperalongthecreaselinestoexaggeratetheraisedlines.Oneofthesectionsformingawedgeiscutout.Makecutstothecenterofthecirclealongapairofthespokes.Closethepapercutouttoformaconeandtapethejointinsidethecone.

    Theinsideconesmaynowbeattachedtothewheels.Theoutsideconesmaybeattachedatthispointifwheelcollarsaretobeused.Alternatively,afterinstallingthewheelsonthelandinggear,awashermaybesolderedtoholdthewheelinplaceandthentheconeisattached.Thismethodmakesaverynicescaleappearance.

    COWLING

    ThecowlingisofbuiltupconstructionusingC1andC2.Constructfrontcowlringbygluing2C1smakingsurethattheyareoverlappingcompletely.Makeacardboardtemplatefromtheplanasaguideforsandingthebalsaintoshape.

    Thecowlshouldnowbesealed,sandedandprimed

    untilnowoodgrainisleftshowing.Baby(Talcum)powderincleardopemakesanexcellentbalsasealer.Talcumpowdermixedinwhitegluemakesexcellentfillerforgapsorgouges.Sanddownafteritdries.

    FittingTailSurfaces

    Attachtheruddertotheverticalstabilizerusing1/8stripsofCAhinges.Similarly,attachtheelevatortothehorizontalstabilizer.Gluethehorizontalstab/elevatorassemblyontothefuselage.Thengluetheverticalstabilizerandrudderassemblyintotheslotinthehorizontalstabilizer.SincetheCamelhasaveryshortnose,pullpulltailsurfacecontrolsaremandatory.

    AileronServos

    Afterassembly,connecttopaileronstobottomaileronswith1/16musicwirepushrods.Connectthemtothesmall1/16plywoodcontrolhornsfittedinthetopofthebottomaileronandthebottomofthetopaileron.

    FittingtheRiggingWires

    UsestrongthreadorKevlarfishinglineorelasticbeadingcordingtosimulateriggingwires.Usesmallscrews,fishinghookeyes,straightpinheadsorsmalleyeletstoattachthelines.Thesewirescanaddadegreeofstrengthtoyourmodel.

    HereisanexcerptofTimsmaiden:

    WellaftermuchdelayandfrustrationIfinallyhadthemaidenflightoftheCamelthismorning.Iamveryhappytoreportthatitisnolongeranorganizedpileofbalsawood,itisanairplane.Itsfinalallupweightcameinabout36oz.withhavingtoaddabout6ozofleadtothenose.IamusingtheAXI2808/20with3cellLiPosand8X5prop.Ishouldprobablyusea10propbutIwasworriedaboutoverheatingthemotor.TheplaneflewverywellbutseemedlikeitcouldusealittlemorepowersoIwilltrythe10X4propIstartedwithandseeifthereisanyproblemswithheat.Therewasalightbreezeandithandledthewindfine.

    Takeoffwasniceandsmooth,theplanetrackedstraightandtrueonthegroundandwasairborneinabout30ft.atthrottle.Iclimbedoutatabout20degreesuntilabouttwomistakesupandthendidacoupleofturns

    aroundthefield.Theplaneflewniceandstableandtheturnsweresmoothwithoutanyadverseyaw.Ineededjustalittleupelevatortrimanditwasflyingprettymuchhandsoff.LikeIsaidinmyearlierpostIfeltitwasalittleunderpoweredbecauseitseemedtostrugglealittleheededintothewindupatthehigheraltitude.ItestedthestallanditdroppeditsnosealittlefasterthanIexpectedbutrecoverywasapieceofcake.IthinkIwilltakealittleoftheweight
