Besides conventional metal detectors, a fully automatic all-metal-elimination by means of an eddy current system is integrated into the cullet charging. Thus it is possible to improve the quality of the charged cullet and consequentially increase the furnace lifetimes.Additionally, the plant is provided with two mixers, each with a capacity of 1875 liters, as well as a fully automatic pre-mix system.

It is assumed that entrepreneurs in 2018 should process 10% of the packaging from paper and non-corrugated cardboard, and in 2020 - already 20%. Similar standards are approved for polymeric, wooden and cork, as well as aluminium packaging,

Besides the batch plant, EME also delivered fully automatic cullet return systems for both SB4 and SB5.The furnace and batch house are both controlled by a high availability Siemens S7-400.Using a joint SCADA system it is possible to operate the complete process from every computer – from raw material delivery, batch production and melting to glass conditioning and factory cullet return. By using web servers, the customer can use any computer as independent clients – even mobile devices are possible. As a direct result of extensive customer feedback concerning the lack of bottle choice in the global wine industry supply chain, leading glass packaging company, Croxsons, has recently taken over a glass furnace at one of the largest glass manufactures in China to produce antique-green wine bottles.

Australia, New Zealand and the US wine markets, whilst complementing their existing European offering, the move will see Croxsons being able to provide their customers with a collection of new bottles that meet their brands’ needs.Croxsons argue that whilst industry trends have seen the reduction in weight of wine bottles, a strategy which has

It appears however, that there are concerns amongst some of Croxsons’ customers that the industry has moved some bottles away from being super-premium, or even premium, to a lighter, standard weight bottle. Ardagh Group has announced that it is to permanently close its Milford, MA, glass container production facility due to a continued decline in demand from the mass beer market in the United States. The closure of the site, which employs 250 people, is expected to take place on or after 31 March 2018. Affected customers will be serviced from the group’s other North American glass facilities.Ardagh said that although capacity dedicated to the mass beer market will be reduced, it will continues to pursue growth opportunities in stronger performing end markets, including wine, spirits and food. This will involve the conversion of some mass beer capacity to serve these alternative end markets. It added that targeted investments in its North America network, including new inspection equipment, will enhance its competitive position and enable differentiation through a focus on innovation, quality and service. The Milford plant began operations in 1973 and has been producing beer bottles since 1987, and was part of Ardagh’s USD 1.7 billion purchase of Verallia North America in April 2014 from French group Saint-Gobain.

Azerbaijan state plant Azercell will expand its production facilities in 2018 according to Economy Minister Shahin Mustafayev at a conference on the results of the fourth year of the implementation of the State Program on Socio-Economic Development of the Regions of Azerbaijan for 2014-2018. Answering the questions of entrepreneurs, the minister noted that Azersteklo passed under the jurisdiction of the Azerbaijan Industrial Corporation, which examined the plant’s activities and identified its problems. As Mustafayev noted, the corporation will open a new production line at this plant. In particular, we are talking about the production of various types of bottles. In November 2017, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, signed a decree on the establishment of the Azerbaijan Industrial Corporation. According to the decree, the authorized capital of the agro-industrial complex and other assets for its activities are formed mainly due to property owned by Aqrarkredit CJSC (on the balance sheet) received instead of the problem assets (debts) transferred from OJSC International Bank of Azerbaijan and transferred in the property (on the balance) of OAO APK.

INDIAN PLANTS MAKE HIGH-QUALITY GLASS PRIMARY PACKAGINGAt the recently-held Pharma Expo Dhaka trade fair in Bangladesh Gerresheimer focussed on pharmaceutical primary packaging made from glass. Gerresheimer owns two plants at its Kosamba site in India: Neutral Glass and the new Gerresheimer Pharmaceutical Packaging Mumbai factory.Neutral Glass manufactures moulded glass products for the pharmaceutical industry. The plant will soon receive a new high-performance furnace for making type I glass. Gerresheimer’s recently constructed plant manufactures vials and ampoules using tubular glass. It will shortly be awarded ISO 15378 certification.“Our new plant in Kosamba produces ampoules and vials made from borosilicate glass to the same high standards as apply in Europe or the Americas. All of our production and inspection processes are standardized and certified worldwide. In February, we will receive ISO 15378 certification,” says Saibal Sengupta, Director Sales, who will be on hand at Pharma Expo Dhaka in booth 123 to advise customers and other interested visitors looking for a suitable solution for their drug. The new plant is already certified in accordance with the following standards: ISO 9001:2015, US DMF Type III, and Health Canada (DMF). Phase I for certification

in accordance with the ISO standard 15378 has been completed. The final audit will be carried out by the end of January, meaning that the plant’s certification will run from February.ISO 15378 applies to primary packaging that comes into direct contact with medication. The standard covers all materials commonly used to make primary packaging such as glass, rubber, aluminium, and plastic. ISO 15378 gives all contract manufacturers and all manufacturers that package such materials themselves an opportunity to secure a high GMP standard and gain international acceptance at an early stage. Suppliers of primary packaging for pharmaceutical products benefit from the fact that the standard incorporates all the relevant GMP requirements and facilitates compliance with international, European, and national law. Vials are amongst the world’s most popular pharmaceutical packaging solutions and Gerresheimer produces versions in clear and amber glass that can hold between 1 and 50 ml. The range of tubular glass vials on offer in Asia includes clear and amber glass types I and II. All manner of different shapes are available, either with or without blowback and compliant with either international standards or the customer’s own specifications.

    10TH WORKSHOP FOR NEW RESEARCHERS

    IN GLASS SCIENCE AND APPLICATION

    LIBBEY

CELEBRATING 200 YEARSLibbey Inc. has several significant milestones in its history, including when the glass manufacturing company established its roots in Toledo in 1888, and again in 1892, when Edward Drummond Libbey changed its name from the New England Glass Company to what it is today. But it was two centuries ago, 1818, that the company first established itself, and it is that benchmark – and the company’s successes since – that will be celebrated this year with both private and public events on 4 and 5 May.“For us to still be making the same product as when we started is pretty profound. This is definitely our big anniversary,” said Jamie Burt, company spokesman. “This [event] has more of a global aspect because we do have a presence in multiple locations and, also, there are very few American companies who have reached 200 years.”Libbey plans to host an invitation-only event the evening of 4 May, which will include a Toledo Symphony Orchestra performance, cocktails, and a video about the company, Mrs. Burt said. There will be a public event at different locations in the city on 5 May, which will include hands-on painting, drawing, and sculpting activities and glassblowing demonstrations at the Toledo Museum of Art, tours of the Edward D. Libbey House and shopping spree incentives at the Libbey Glass Factory Outlet. In conjunction with the celebration, the art museum in late April will open an exhibition of Libbey glass featuring both contemporary pieces and late 19th and early 20th century works from its permanent collection of 650 Libbey pieces, including the popular Libbey punch bowl that was cut by

a craftsman at the Toledo plant for the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, said glass curator Diane Wright.“The museum has quite a few works from the days of the New England Glass Works that date to the beginning of glass production in Cambridge,” Ms. Wright said. “Of special importance here is the tremendous encyclopedic glass collection, one of the few collections of its kind in this country. The impact of the Libbey Glass company on the city of Toledo really cannot be understated.”Libbey has already started its internal celebration, coined Toast to 200 Years, Mrs. Burt said, and employees have been asked to raise a glass in its two US manufacturing plants here and in Shreveport, La., as well as plants in China, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Portugal.“One of the things we are asking associates to do, whether with customers or suppliers, is to take a picture toasting to Libbey, and we will be creating a collage” that will be shared during the May events and also on social media, she said.Libbey was actually founded as the New England Glass Company in East Cambridge, Mass., on 18 February 1818, by William Libbey. His son, Edward Drummond Libbey, moved the company from the Boston area to Toledo in 1888, building a plant on farmland northeast of the downtown area. It was the beginning of what would be Toledo’s legacy as the Glass City. Headquartered downtown for more than 125 years, the company produces glassware, flatware, and dinnerware for restaurants and consumers. Significant events in the glass company’s history include being the first to develop machine-blown glass in 1907 and its patent of the first one-piece press and blow stemware process in 1970.Libbey has about 6,200 employees worldwide, and it claimed net sales of USD 793.4 million in 2016.

to the structure and properties of bioactive glasses, hybrids and composites, for the design of new materials for health applications. Compatibility with human body of prostheses and scaffolds, will be discussed. The interactions with drugs and molecules with glass, adsorption, delamination problems of glass containers for pharmaceutical products, will also be treated. In the sessions where the two threads overlap, all participants will cross two bridges: one between science and application, the other between academia and industry. The lecturers will be world experts in their fields. A significant aspect of the workshop will be student-centred projects that will help participants to develop their understanding by applying what they know to specific issues.Pre-registration: Deadline 15/04/2018 by email to: [email protected]; registration deadline 15/05/2018. Participants will be limited to: 30 (Glass Science); and 20 (Glass Applications).A more complete programme will appear soon on the ICG web site (www.icglass.org).

  • Leading glass packaging manufacturer Beatson Clark is once again investing in the future of its Rotherham plant, covering all areas from glass melting and production to inspection, packaging and IT. This latest investment of over GBP 2 million is in addition to the GBP 20 million that has been spent on improvements over the past decade and is part of the company’s commitment to improve quality and maintain excellent customer service. XPAR Vision contributed to the discussion about the future of the worldwide glass industry, through a keynote by CEO Paul Schreuders at Glassman Asia, January 2018 in Bangkok, Thailand. In Schreuders’ presentation, entitled ‘Container Glass Forming in 2020/2025: Dark Factory’, he addressed the need to focus on improving glass forming process stability and at the same time on reducing human dependency

    XPAR VISION

CONTAINER GLASS INDUSTRY CAN DO UP TO 25% BETTER THAN TODAY

in order to improve efficiency, quality, weight, speed, price and profit. Dramatic improvements are necessary in order to remain competitive with other packaging materials, according to Schreuders. Schreuders’ keynote presentation was part of the Future Glass Forum, that focused on Industry 4.0 in container and hollow glassmaking. “Although we work and live in the 21st century, the container glass industry seems to be

stuck in the past, caused by conservatism and the fear for new developments and/or changes in general”, according to Schreuders. “As a result, as of today and especially in comparison to other industries, the container glass industry is not nearly effective enough and is slowly but surely losing their competitiveness to other packing materials. Only a clear and convinced focus on sensor technology, closed loops and robotics, especially

in the hot end forming phase, can improve the industry. I am convinced that the container glass industry can do up to 25% better than today: making better bottles, being less dependent on employees, using less energy and less raw materials. My plea is not about future developments: we are doing this right now, in several factories in the world already. It is all about proven technology.”

    BORMIOLI PHARMA

    PACKAGING INNOVATIONS OFFER

    SOLUTION TO UNSTABLE DRUG FORMULATIONS

This year’s Pharmapack Conference (7-8 February 2018) saw Bormioli Pharma, one of the world’s leading glass and plastic packaging manufacturers for the pharmaceutical sector, make a bold commitment to guarantee safety with simple and precise reconstitution of oral drug products. The adoption of innovative packaging solutions, like Bormioli Pharma’s AccuRec revolutionary dual-chamber system for oral reconstitutable medicines, is a step-change towards eliminating the adverse side effects of excipients in oral drugs.AccuRec’s dual chamber system design maximizes drug stability by eliminating the need to include excipients with the active ingredient; a promising high-tech solution to a growing safety concern in the industry. The inclusion of excipients in pharmaceuticals is traditionally used to make drugs more stable, but can also contribute to additional adverse effects from direct toxicity, allergy or intolerance. Considering this additional risk, the use of excipients requires justification to ensure they are not being used to disguise poorly formulated products or inadequate packaging. AccuRec has the capability to circumvent the need for excipients because the chambers avoid active ingredients contacting and interacting with the solvent until the moment of administration. Reconstitution is usually complex but AccuRec’s dual-chamber system is an easy to use system enabling the user to reconstitute oral drugs in just a few easy steps. AccuRec helps to eliminate the chances of human error by providing pre-dosed solvent and drug powder chambers ensuring easy self-administration and effective mixing.“Unstable drug formulations are a growing concern for healthcare professionals and drug developers,” says Elena Piazza, Business Development and Marketing Manager, Bormioli Pharma. “Our AccuRec system has drawn on Bormioli Pharma’s heritage in reconstitutable medicines and completely redesigned the powdered oral drug concept. The revolutionary design makes reconstitution simple and accurate, helping to ensure efficacy of treatment and ease of use for the patient. At Bormioli Pharma, we are excited about what AccuRec can offer stakeholders in the healthcare provision: from payers to patients.”AccuRec was exhibited at Pharmapack 2018 and available from February 2018. Bormioli Pharma expects the first at-scale commercial roll out of its AccuRec system with a drug manufacturer in the second quarter of 2018, and anticipates wide horizons as it grows throughout 2018.

After 18 years of responsibility as a Managing Director and member of the Executive Board, Christian Jatzwauk has officially retired from the Executive Board of Horn Glass Industries. Jatzwauk is leaving the company at his own request in order to face new professional challenges. During his work at Horn, he has contributed significantly to the development and success

Mould swabbing operation is key for the glass forming process. Swabbing lubricants are a combination of different chemicals and the use of them combined with the high temperature creates undesired effects on equipment, on glass and on people: corrosion and smoke. Glassline® lubricants reportedly offer the best compromise. Swabbing lubricants do contain sulphur; this chemical is necessary as it plays a role as lubricating improver when extreme pressure (EP) is present. EP conditions is definitely present when the gob is formed to a glass bottle through the different processes (blow/blow, press/blow or NNPB). Unfortunately, sulphur (and for sure excess of sulphur) has a metal corrosive impact, especially on bronze and bronze/nickel moulds; this negative effect will directly impact the quality and lifetime of mould equipment but also indirectly, glass bottles defects can occurred. In 2016, VDV Lubricants decided – in partnership with a specialised Belgian research institute (BIL) – to identify and quantify the corrosion effect of swabbing lubricants during their application on heated metal surfaces; the objective was to come out with at least 1 solution.Without going in details, some basic data from this study:- Swabbing lubricants tested:

    - Reference = typical swabbing formulation containing standard base oil, a package of additives (including sulphur based products) and graphite.

of the company.Although the separation was mutually agreed the company greatly regrets the departure of Jatzwauk. In order to improve a globally expanding business in the areas of container/special glass, as well as in the area of technological turnkey plants for container and float glass of Horn Glass Industries, which will continue to be led by Mr. Stephan Meindl, has, therefore carried

out a restructuring and expansion of its leadership.Mrs. Firsova and Mr. Imhof have been working as authorized signatories for the two main business areas since 1 October 2017.In future, Mrs. Ekaterina Firsova will be responsible for the business unit technological glass plants. Since 2003, Mrs. Firsova has played a key role in the development of the turnkey plants/float business unit at Horn

    - Reference containing five different selected anti-corrosive agents

    - Test conditions: - Copper plated heated at 500°C. Copper has been

selected as it is the most sensitive material to observe corrosion.

    - During 10 days and each 20 minutes, application of swabbing lubricant droplets on the heated metal surface.

The results expected were very present and can be summarized as follows:- Surface damaged = metal losses and irregular surface- Without anti-corrosive agent the average damage is:

    - 120 to 212μm metal losses or 13 to 23% of original surface depth

    - With anti-corrosive agents is the average damage:- 28 to 166μm metal losses or 3 to 18% of original surface depthThe best result is only an average of 3% metal loss/depth damage. The main technical conclusions from this study are the effective impact of corrosion damage of metal surfaces during swabbing operation and the existing option to considerably limit this negative effect. Putting this within glass manufacturing activity, it is clear that mould metal losses and surface damages are potential risks to create glass inclusions, metal contaminations of the inner content of the bottle and so leading to quality claims. Additionally, the lifetime of the moulds is reduced and will generate cost

in various functions, including as project manager. Mr. Ulrich Imhof will be responsible for the container/special glass business unit. Mr. Imhof began his career in the container glass industry in 1989 and joined Horn in 2012. Since then, he has been the sales director responsible for the Asian division and, from 2015, also head of the container/special glass division.

    FUTRONIC

WOLFGANG LACHMANN RETIRES; NEW HEAD OF DEVELOPMENTWolfgang Lachmann, aged 63, Managing Director at futronic together with Michael Preuss for about 30 years, has retired from active professional life on 1 February 2018.Michael Preuss will continue as the sole Managing Director of futronic GmbH. To enable him to concentrate more on his duties leading the company in future, Preuss handed over responsibility for sales to Stephan Pies at the turn of the year. Lachmann’s successor has already taken over – Frank Ebersbach was appointed Head of Development with responsibility for all of futronic’s software and hardware development activities starting on 1 December.

Frank Ebersbach, aged 38, recently joined futronic as new Head of Development. He will be responsible in the future for all of futronic’s software and hardware development activities in the container glass division as well as for automating customised applications with embedded systems. He previously worked for ten years as an engineer at a major international supplier of sensor and automation solutions based in Tettnang.Ebersbach’s duties will include the further development and optimisation of futronic’s successful controls and drives for container glass machinery and equipment.

at maintenance and purchasing levels. The good news is really that solutions exists and VDV Lubricants is now able to update on request its Glassline® swabbing lubricants to offer glass plants a controlled and limited corrosion impact on its mould equipment. In fact, this is the most important challenge as it concerns directly the health of production operators; let’s also not forget that air contamination in the production area influences the inner content of produced bottles as well. Swabbing lubricants are a combination of a liquid phase composed of a base oil with lubricant additives, and a solid phase composed of graphite. As soon the swabbing lubricants comes in in contact with the heated mould surface, the main part of the liquid phase, for sure the base oil, will almost instantly convert to a gaseous phase, this phenomena is unavoidable. In order to limit the generated swabbing smoke, the only option is to reduce the use of lubricant; this can be achieved by a manual ‘dry’ swabbing or even better, by automatic swabbing. As soon the quantity of smoke is controlled, it is a priority to look then closer at the content of it … as you cannot always see or smell what’s in there! VDV Lubricants, as a responsible chemical manufacturer, has taken the initiative to have a complete and representative study (performed by Vito Research Center, Belgium) about the smoke quality generated during swabbing operation. The conditions of this study are:- Heated metal surface – avg. 450°C Weight-controlled lubricant dosage system- Closed atmosphere to collect the entire gaseous components- Gas-analysis equipmentFor this project one swabbing lubricant from competition was selected, 1 standard Glassline® swabbing lubricant and VDV Lubricants’ latest innovative product, Glassline® SwabPharma: this latest product has been developed by VDV Lubricants and patented for its properties towards a high level of safe and clean swabbing. Some conclusions:- Swabbing lubricants are chemicals; when in contact with

heated mould surface, they will burn off and always create smoke that contains chemical components

    - Swabbing smoke (also called oil mist) usually contains components that are subject of healthy high concerns, as inhaled by production operators all day long

    - Depending on the air recirculation in the production area, limited exposure values established by national authorities are exceeded

    - Glassline® SwabPharma is the first product on the market that offers reduced risks of air contamination.

The mission of VDV Lubricants, through its Glassline® lubricants, is to serve the glass people with the safest and most efficient technology of today and tomorrow. Last but not least, remember a basic rule when using chemicals that can impact your life or your job: use the right ones and use them as less a possible.
