Sorrento Village is one of those places that it doesn’t matter how long or short your stay, you’ll always feel like you’re a world away. It has great charm with its commanding limestone buildings and breathtaking bay and ocean beaches, but the village is a destination all of its own.Sorrento Village offers an eclectic mix of old fashioned boutiques, galleries, antique and toy stores that are owned and managed by the person who serves you, but you can also get the high end chain stores that you find in the most cosmopolitan of city shopping centres. There is a great choice for foodies and coffee lovers as well, highlighted during the Taste of Sorrento food and wine festival from 1-8 June, as well as accommodation and all basic services within a short walk from town.Sorrento is possibly THE best destination for a girls

weekend away – shopping, eating, shopping, massage, shopping, walking, …and did I mention shopping? No matter what the weather, good friends can enjoy each others company, have a few drinks, a few laughs and not have to drive anywhere as the village has it all in one place.Keep an eye on the website sorrento.org.au for up coming events such as Taste of Sorrento 1-8 June, the Lets Go Cruisin classic car rally on 14 July, and Art on the Beach coming in October. If you’d prefer to be kept up to date by phone, simply SMS ‘sorrento@spcc’ to 0427 800 800 to receive updates by text, or checkout sorrentovillage facebook page.Sorrento – consider a visit this autumn and winter. When I’m low I reach for the good stuff – dark, dark, morsels of soothing bitter sweetness. It’s a case of necessity, (or so I tell myself!)Mornington Peninsula Chocolates understands this overwhelming need to make ourselves feel better and even stimulate our brains and circulatory system along the way. But their hand-crafted chocolate creations are by no means a mere sugar fix, they are organic vessels of pure designer pleasure.Ex Potter Isilda Caldwell brings shape and form to these artisan chocolates, while co-owner ex mechanical engineer Milton Laycock takes care of the technical side. The result is an overwhelming

appreciation for the art of indulgence.‘We fell in love with the idea of making chocolate after watching the film Chocolat’, says Milton. In it Juliette Binoche changes people’s lives (with chocolate) in a repressed French village. ‘We use traditional French, Belgian and Swiss techniques and have worked alongside some of the world’s most famous master chocolatiers and patisserie chefs’, he goes on. Both Isilda and Mitlon have studied in Australia and overseas and are constantly researching the best chocolate making techniques which has resulted in an extensive range of multi award winning chocolates: try honey, orange, or raspberry ganache,

almond cluster or marzipan with cognac or a hazelnut praline - all very sweet, but not so simple. For the finest custom made gifts, delicious delights to share with friends or that unique corporate offering, experience Mornington Peninsula Chocolates, and get oh so wonderfully happy!Mornington Peninsula Chocolates45 Cook St, Flinders Ph: 5989 00405 George St, Sorrento Ph.: 5984 0416Email: [email protected] hours: Monday, Thursday and Friday 12 noon - 5pm. A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME by Liz Rogers

Transport yourself to a time of afternoon teas in rose adorned cups, striking it rich in the gold fields of the 1800’s or promenading the town in the latest mink stole mid 1940’s. Marlene Miller’s store reads like who’s who from the seventeenth century onwards. One hundred year old chests support sharpened Italian tools from the 1850’s. Victorian Cedar bookcases lay in wait for poetry and fiction from as early as the 1680’s to tell their tales.Antiques have the wonderful power to divulge our past so we can look towards the future. Marlene has been part of the antique world for almost 30 years. Her keen eye is personified in her eclectic range of fine jewellery.Viewing the magnificent range of Gold Rush brooches, necklaces and rings is a must. The gold in these early pieces is fluid, almost seeming to spring back into shape when touched. This is the perfect place to find that engagement or wedding ring you’ve been searching for.Step back into a world where craftsmanship is honoured and age is a thing of beauty at Marlene Miller Antiques, where magic really does happen and time stands still.Marlene Miller Antiques - open seven days a week 10am (ish) till 5pm (closed Christmas and Good Friday)128 Ocean Beach Road, SorrentoPh: 5984 1762 M: 0438 537 757

boutique’s stock is the Sketa label,’ she continues. Sketa isn’t a mass market product so don’t expect to see many other women wearing the same design. ‘We create small collections of limited edition individual prints and every design is precision cut by highly skilled craftspeople’ says Adele. But just because quality, style and fabulous fit are part of the Sketa credo, doesn’t mean you’ll have to pay an arm and a leg to own one. ‘Savvy shoppers know they can buy a Sketa garment for roughly half the price of many advertised designer labels’ says Adele. ‘We focus on longevity and value for money’. Catering for women of all ages who want to be fashionable but refuse to be faddish, Adele knows people are tempted to buy cheap imported products. ‘Sketa is proud to be an all Australian manufacturing company; there aren’t many of us left’. Uniquely designed to enhance your individual tastes the jewellery crafted by Jeffery Malesa is exceptional in every way. Each piece is lovingly hand carved using generous amounts of gold or platinum to ensure a long lasting secure mount for your diamonds and precious gemstones. Some clients are initially unsure about following a personal design process through to a finished jewel.“I don’t know what it will look like and whether l will like it.”With over 30 years experience of guiding people through the design process and no unhappy customers, Jeffery can comfortably take you step by step to a great result you will feel truly came from your own heart.“Some folks have no idea what they are looking for at all.” explains Jeffery. “This was a bit daunting until l started the process of elimination. Before long a path or two will open up and the magic begins.”Others have a strong idea and are still amazed at the

results. Often the final bits of inspiration, born out of observation or dictated by the gems, happen at the bench when necessary adjustments are made to enhance the original concept. The results are truly beyond expectation.

Manyung Gallery in MtEliza has been the peninsula’s home of contemporary art for the past 44 years. Now also in Sorrento, the galleries’ walls constantly change with inspiration coming from Manyung’s stable of over 150 artists. Manyung Gallery Group’s art consultants are friendly and easy to work with and have unparalleled expertise in introducing beautiful paintings to your home, one wall at a time, in an enjoyable way.Manyung’s art consultants can visit your home, digitally record the areas requiring attention, measure critical spaces, review artificial and natural lighting affecting hanging or display areas, and assess the current layout as well as tonality of the target environment. They can then superimpose images of paintings you like onto photographs taken of your walls and email a ‘new look’ back to you.The next step is to organise a trial delivery so you can view the pieces you really like in your home, assist with the final choice, placement, installation and, most importantly, ensure you are totally happy with the ‘fit’ of your artworks. If you have recently come to the realisation that your home needs artwork on empty, plain walls, or

refreshment and updating with contemporary art, here’s some initial advice from Manyung’s experience art consultants.ASSESS YOUR SPACES Have a wander around your home with a ‘critical’ eye, as if you are visiting for the first time. What wall spaces jump out at you as being especially plain and needing artwork?Which areas are first seen by you and visitors when you enter a room, particularly at the front entrance and the family areas where everyone usually clusters to socialise?Often a couple’s private areas, particularly the master bedroom, also are singled out as needing a special painting or sculpture.PRIORITISE YOUR NEEDS After determining those areas that you would like artwork in, prioritise the ones to address first. At this stage you may also wish to consider reframing some of your existing artworks in a more contemporary way. If you are now wishing to look for new artworks for one or two ‘high priority walls’, start some basic research.RESEARCH ART GALLERIES, SERVICES Visit or look at the websites of local galleries. It is hard to believe but there are over twenty art galleries and studios on the Mornington Peninsula. Manyung Gallery in Mt Eliza, established in 1968, has over 150 artists and about 2000 images of artworks on its website www.manyunggallery.com.auSelect some artists or images that you are drawn to and contact the gallery to discuss sizes, availability and prices. Some galleries, like Manyung, offer interest free payment plans, home trial, free delivery and will assist with installation. As Directors of Manyung Gallery, Sharyn and David Wemyss-Smith have developed a positive reputation for providing practical and creative consultancy and service for clients wishing to receive experienced input to their creative choices.Call Manyung on 9787 2953 to arrange a chat at your home, or visit the gallery soon.

Taking a walk anywhere on the Mornington Peninsula is a joyous experience, but the Millionaire’s Walk along the clifftops from Sorrento to Portsea is simply thrilling.Besides being gobsmacked by the awesome views across Port Philip Bay and beyond, one gets to step into the backyards of the Peninsula’s rich and famous. As well as marvelling at their beautifully landscaped gardens, you’ll get an insight into how Melbourne’s elite spend time at their summer mansions with their private jetties. The two kilometre walk is relatively easy and usually takes about two hours.Start your walk at the Sorrento Beach rotunda and stroll along the Esplanade towards Portsea. You’ll pass the historical stream train terminals before mounting the clifftop and ambling through the Millionaires gardens. On a clear day you can see Queenscliff on the other side of

the bay and you’ll also observe the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry coming and going. You’ll even spot the Millionaires out in their leisure craft.Sorrento was the location of the first white settlement in Victoria.Just before you finish the walk in Portsea, you will come across a white trig station and a stone monument. This is the place where on the 9th of March 1802, Acting Lieutenant John Murray, commander of ‘HMS Lady Nelson’ took possession of Port King, which was later renamed Port Philip Bay, for the British Crown..He marked the spot by hoisting the Union Jack – the first time the flag was hoisted in Australia. If you’re thirsty after the walk, you can always drop into the Portsea Hotel for a refreshment or two!Millionaire’s Walk isn’t the only great walk in the Sorrento area, there are plenty of others. For more information contact the Beachside Visitor Information Centre on 5984 1478.

Sorrento has many fine examples of early limestone buildings with the versatile stone playing a significant role in the development of the historcal seaside resort. The three hotels in the township – Continental, Koonya and Sorrento - are built from the beautiful limestone. Overlooking the bay, Hotel Sorrento, built in 1872, is classified by the National Trust.Made famous by the movie bearing its name, it is a favoured hotel amongst visitors and locals alike. The Continental Hotel, in the main street, is also classified and was for many years the place to stay for the well to do.In 1904, an annexe was built opposite on Constitution Hill and used as a ballroom. The Continental Hotel is believed to be the only four storey limestone building in Australia.Koonya Hotel, which has great sentimental value to the community, was a thorn in the side of the other two hotels owners who opposed its construction.Kooyna is an aboriginal word for seagull and the property was owned and operated by the well known Clark family until 1952.St John’s Anglican Church, built as the earliest church

on the Mornington Peninsula, is once again heritage listed. A beautifully proportioned neo-Gothic building, construction of which commenced in 1873 on land donated by the headmaster of Geelong Grammar. It was added to in 1889 and later 1908-11 and houses the unique stained glass Prince Consort window. Limestone beauty below is Nepean Historical Society.

If you’re looking for that perfect “once in a lifetime experience”, you can’t go past swimming with the beautiful wild bottlenose dolphins and fur seals in Port Phillip Bay. Starting their season each October, Moonraker Dolphin Swims offer a range of swimming and cruising options to suit your needs.Sandy Mackinnon and her daughter Torie have been operating Moonraker from Sorrento Pier for the last 22 years, but recently have opened at 7 George Street Sorrento. Their commitment to sustainable environmental tourism was recently recognised when they won the coveted Qantas Australian Tourism Award for “Best Eco Tourism Business in Australia” and also the Victorian Tourism Award for “Best Eco Tourism Business”.

Flagship vessel “Moonraker” leaves Sorrento Pier daily at 9am and 1pm for a variety of tours. A second vessel “Blue Wing” was added to the fleet in 2010 to offer smaller personalised tours with a strong educational focus on the marine environment. The popular ‘Dolphin and Seal Swim Tour’ will take you on a 2 or 3 hour adventure where you can swim alongside friendly fur seals and wild dolphins. All equipment is provided and the crew give full demonstrations to those on board. Returning to Sorrento, you can enjoy delicious morning or afternoon tea while

enjoying the crystal waters of our beautiful bay.For those who’d rather stay dry, the “Dolphin and Seal Sightsee Cruise” is an experience to remember. Point Nepean National Park is truly one of Victoria’s beautiful natural and historical landscapes.Offering free entry, the park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay, highlights of which are now accessible from the top of the recently opened Monash Light Tower. The entrance to Port Phillip Bay was the most heavily forted port of the British Empire and was known as the ‘Gibraltar of the South’. Visitors will enjoy discovering Point Nepean’s remarkable history through exploring Fort Nepean’s extensive network of forts, gun

emplacements and tunnels. The Quarantine Station, established in 1852 is another ‘must do’. Here visitors can explore history through visiting the hospitals, a disinfecting complex, a morgue, and cemetery. To best plan your visit, head towards the Quarantine Station first. There, Information Centre staff will direct you to linked walking trails, an all weather shuttle bus service, self guided and audio tour options, and the extensive network of tracks to cycle, with bike and tag-along carriages and helmets available for hire in the park. Point Nepean National Park. Located at the end of Point Nepean Road, Portsea. Park entry is free. For more info visit www.parks.vic.gov.au or call 13 1963

When this circa 1886 building came up for sale around twenty years ago, the Fairlie family couldn’t resist. ‘We had another business in town already’, says Helen, ‘but we fell for this one straight away’. Take the night off this winter with a delicious casserole, curry, lasagne or soup made from only the highest quality ingredients sourced locally. A dreamy dessert will complete the deal. The main floor houses a café, liquor store and IGA. Think coffee and cake and wines from throughout the region. There is also a deli crammed full of delightful dips, crusty baguettes and mouth-watering cheeses all ready to jump into a picnic basket for those on the go, or stay put in the cosy courtyard or be street seen out front. A downstairs cellar houses a select range of vintage wines.‘We only stock produce we love’, says Helen, and it’s a family affair - her husband Warwick and their daughters Nina and Lucy are on board. ‘We love to cook, and we love to eat!’Whether it’s your weekly shop or a gourmet treat you’re after, what the unique Stringers Stores hasn’t got, you don’t need. Pavarotti knew what he was talking about. He believed that ‘one of the nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop and devote our attention to eating’. LOqUAT follows this simple motto with operatic panache, and after almost ten years in operation, it is pleasing to report they have kept up the good work!Chef / owner Paul Manning knows his stuff. Starting front of house before planting roots in the kitchen, he and co-owner Tracey have worked and travelled in Far North Queensland, North America and Europe. Combinations like Duck Confit with Anise Jus & Sous Vide Salmon with Miso Butter stand testimony to his prowess. If Paul is not curing, corning, smoking or pickling something, you’ll find him fishing or in the LOQUAT garden tending to his micro herbs. He is ever looking for ways to make food taste better. This year LOQUAT was part of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival Regional World’s Longest Lunch on the Sorrento Foreshore. Their entree of gin & dill cured salmon with crisp skin, capers, grapefruit and micro-herbs was a hit. The great

tenor would be pleased. And so will you. Take the plunge a few steps down off Point Nepean Road in Sorrento and you’ll come up trumps.
