Taking a walk anywhere on the Mornington Peninsula is a joyous experience, but the Millionaire’s Walk along the clifftops from Sorrento to Portsea is simply thrilling.Besides being gobsmacked by the awesome views across Port Philip Bay and beyond, one gets to step into the backyards of the Peninsula’s rich and famous. As well as marvelling at their beautifully landscaped gardens, you’ll get an insight into how Melbourne’s elite spend time at their summer mansions with their private jetties.The two kilometre walk is relatively easy and usually takes about two hours.Start your walk at the Sorrento Beach rotunda and stroll along the Esplanade towards Portsea.You’ll pass the historical stream train terminals before mounting the clifftop and ambling through the Millionaires gardens.On a clear day you can see Queenscliff on the other side of

the bay and you’ll also observe the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry coming and going.You’ll even spot the Millionaires out in their leisure craft.Sorrento was the location of the first white settlement in Victoria.Just before you finish the walk in Portsea, you will come across a white trig station and a stone monument. This is the place where on the 9th of March 1802, Acting Lieutenant John Murray, commander of ‘HMS Lady Nelson’ took possession of Port King, which was later renamed Port Philip Bay, for the British Crown..He marked the spot by hoisting the Union Jack – the first time the flag was hoisted in Australia. If you’re thirsty after the walk, you can always drop into the Portsea Hotel for a refreshment or two!Millionaire’s Walk isn’t the only great walk in the Sorrento area, there are plenty of others.For more information contact the Beachside Visitor Information Centre on 5984 1478.

Sorrento has many fine examples of early limestone buildings with the versatile stone playing a significant role in the development of the historcal seaside resort. The three hotels in the township – Continental, Koonya and Sorrento - are built from the beautiful limestone. Overlooking the bay, Hotel Sorrento, built in 1872, is classified by the National Trust.Made famous by the movie bearing its name, it is a favoured hotel amongst visitors and locals alike.The Continental Hotel, in the main street, is also classified and was for many years the place to stay for the well to do.In 1904, an annexe was built opposite on Constitution Hill and used as a ballroom.The Continental Hotel is believed to be the only four storey limestone building in Australia.Koonya Hotel, which has great sentimental value to the community, was a thorn in the side of the other two hotels owners who opposed its construction.Kooyna is an aboriginal word for seagull and the property was owned and operated by the well known Clark family until 1952.St John’s Anglican Church, built as the earliest church

on the Mornington Peninsula, is once again heritage listed. A beautifully proportioned neo-Gothic building, construction of which commenced in 1873 on land donated by the headmaster of Geelong Grammar.It was added to in 1889 and later 1908-11 and houses the unique stained glass Prince Consort window. Surf’s up at SorrentoSorrento SLSC has more than 400 members. Each patrol season club members perform between 10 and 20 rescues and over 200 preventative actions on the main ocean beach.Sorrento SLSC is an active member of the local community, patrolling the back beach, providing sport and recreation, water safety training, skill development and offering frontline first aid and emergency services.Their website contains information for visitors to the area, people intending to get involved in surf lifesaving, and operational information (patrol times, rosters, events) for club members.

Some tips to ensure your visit to the beach is safe and fun.Always swim between the flags.Read and obey the signs.If you are unsure of surf conditions, ask a lifesaver.Don’t swim directly after a meal.Don’t swim under the influence of alcohol or drugs.Never run or dive into the water, even if you have checked before. Point Nepean National Park is truly one of Victoria’s beautiful natural and historical landscapes.Offering free entry, the park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay, highlights of which are now accessible from the top of the recently opened Monash Light Tower. Since it opened last November the Whispering Vines Café has been the talk of the town.Each day there is a buzz at the Café as visitors are surprised at the quality of the food on offer at very reasonable prices.Manager Lori Smith, previously Sommelier in some of Melbourne’s finest and most iconic venues has set about delivering big city standards in an unpretentious atmosphere. “I just love talking to people about wine and introducing them to styles and flavours they may have never tried or even heard of before”, she said.The style is relaxed and the service is warm and friendly.“I have to say, I’ve been pleasantly surprised, I never expected anything like the numbers we have seen in our first year, and even more pleasing is the number of regulars we have attracted, it’s clear a café like this is what people here want” said owner, Jim Manolios.Sue and Ian Smith live at Dromana

Chef Farid Rachedi was trained in Toulouse, France and worked for some of the prestigious catering companies in London, he made the move to the Mornington Peninsula because his wife, who is also a chef, lives here.He is highly trained in pastries and has a great knowledge of regionality and using local produce from his training in France.Most of the Whispering Vines produce is grown organically in the owner’s next door garden.Whispering Vines is the centrepiece of stunning, Trofeo Estate, a local vineyard run on biodynamic principles and producing wine in imported terracotta amphorae to promote the purity of the fruit.Cellar Door is open from 10-5pm 7 days a week, the cellar door not only provides wine tasting and sales direct to the public but also offers a range of Trofeo Estate produce and products for sale, from Olive Oil grown on olive groves in Samos Greece to fruit and preserves made from local produce.
