WINTERCESSION 2018 Program Guide and Course Catalog
March 12th – 16th, 2018
Welcome to Wintercession 2018!
Wintercession is a week-long program for sophomores in which groups of faculty and students explore a specific topic or
theme, project or adventure, in an experiential manner. Course offerings include studies in specialized skills, academics,
community service, field studies, culture, and outdoor adventure.
On the pages that follow you will find brief descriptions of the exciting courses offered this year. Course offerings are
designed around the interests and expertise of tenth grade faculty members, as well as the interests of the students in the
class of 2020.
The scheduling of Wintercession is strategically placed; it minimizes conflict with sports seasons, school
productions, and other extracurricular activities, allowing for participation of all students.
Following Wintercession week there will be class time devoted to debriefing experiences and participating in a
sophomore class culminating conference. All courses run Monday through Friday, unless stated otherwise in the
course catalog.
For more information, please contact Dave Jasinski at [email protected]
For questions regarding financial aid and payment please contact Kelly Driscoll at [email protected] or Maren
Petropulos at [email protected]

Wintercession Course Selection Information
Behavioral Expectations
The behavioral expectations for students during Wintercession are outlined at the back of this brochure and include
information which is available in the student planners, as well as online. Take time to read these documents and
discuss their meaning. While this will be done with students in Advisory, it is also important that parents understand
the meaning behind these documents. We encourage you to have these conversations with your child.
Course Selection
The tenth grade has designed a wide array of courses to meet the needs and interests of all students. We strongly
recommend that you read through each course description with your student to assist him/her in making the strongest
choices. Students must pick the top five courses they would like to participate in to ensure they will be placed into a
course to best match their interest levels.
Once courses have been selected, students will be placed into the lottery system for course selection. **Students must
submit all forms and deposit to be included in the lottery system. **
The Lottery
In an effort to be equitable, we have chosen a lottery system to assign students their Wintercession Courses. Each
student that turns in his/her paperwork on time will be randomly assigned a number. This number determines the order
in which students are assigned their courses. It is important that you guide your student carefully in choosing the top
five courses to assist us in placing them in courses that will maximize their interests.
To be eligible for the Wintercession Lottery, student must turn the following paperwork by October 25th:
1 Signed Behavior Contract
2 Course Selection Form (with TOP FIVE choices selected)
3 Signed Parent Permission Form
4 $100 deposit (except those requesting financial aid)
If interested in the Independent Study Option
1 Behavior Contract for Wintercession
2 Course Selection Form with “Independent Study” option clearly selected as the number one choice (and 2-5 also selected)
3 Parent Permission Form
4 Typed Independent Study proposal that meets the criteria described in this Course Catalog
*No deposit is required for Independent Study candidates
**$10 Dollars from each student’s course cost will be used to help cover the cost of running the Wintercession
Program.
***Since budgets are determined by the number of students in each course, a switch is only done in extreme
circumstances. In the case of a move to independent study, the $100 deposit will be held to ensure every course can
provide the optimal experience for all students.
Financial Aid
Some Financial Aid is available to those who need it. Please check the financial aid request box on the course
selection form. This information will be kept strictly confidential. You will be contacted by Kelly Driscoll to discuss
what financial assistance plan is best suited to your needs.

However, the price increase this year represents our need to respond to operational increases as well as
including trip insurance. As you may or may not be aware, last year severe weather threatened cancellation of
the trip. In order to protect all against the unlikely (but clearly possible) impact of a weather event, it is
important to include travel insurance for these courses.

Cost per student: $300 Number of students:10 Location: Souhegan High School, Boston and Cape Cod, Massachusetts Type of course: Marine Biology and Conservation
What can I expect to be doing during this course? It seems as though sharks are in the headlines, on social media and the subject of blockbuster movies with increasing frequency, but what do we really know about them? Shark Week is your opportunity to learn to separate fact from fiction to better understand these fascinating animals. During this course you will find opportunities to immerse yourself in the study of marine science, shark biology, and conservation. During our Wintercession week, we will spend a few days in Souhegan’s very own Marine Lab, where we will team up with SHS marine biology classes to learn more about shark biology, anatomy, physiology and ecology through lectures and close examination of shark specimens. Students will conduct a shark tracking activity using online interfaces, such as Ocean Tracks (oceantracks.org) and Ocearch (ocearch.org) and explore how technology is changing what we know about these mysterious creatures and how this knowledge can be applied to specific conservation efforts. We will study the portrayal of sharks in film/media and discuss its impact on sharks worldwide. We will learn about the increase in the white shark population on Cape Cod and meet with shark scientists on the Cape, visiting Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and staying overnight in Falmouth, MA. From there we will go to Boston to visit the New England Aquarium and their new exhibit, the Science of Sharks. Over the course of the week, students will work together to create an outreach project (a short film, an infographic, a blog, etc) that they will use to communicate information about sharks and their conservation to the public. What will I learn from the experience? Our main goal is to learn about the biology of sharks, the science involved with learning about them, and to explore conservation strategies to protect them. This will include being skilled information processors as we separate the facts vs. the fiction in the media, analyzing authentic data sets related to their ocean migrations, and exploring the methods used for studying sharks in the field and the laboratory. Students will also be effective communicators, developing their own media to challenge the public perception of sharks and ideas on how to prevent their extinction. How does this learning connect to the Souhegan curriculum? This course targets ecological concepts in the 10th grade science curriculum. In addition, students will be employing several of Souhegan’s science practices such as analyzing data and obtaining, evaluating and communicating information.

alongside their engineers and designers as they review the company’s latest innovations.
This is a great extended learning opportunity as well as a chance to visit college campuses. Part of our initial
work will be to hear everyone’s areas of STEM interest and then as a group, finalize our destinations. We will
take an official campus tour of each of the colleges we visit. There may also be the opportunity to connect with
some of our Souhegan alumni at these institutions if our timing is right! We will split the week up into 2 single
day trips to Boston and an extended 3-day trip which includes two overnights in the Boston/Cambridge area.
While on the trip, we will work on collaboration and problem-solving skills, which will be especially important
as we take on an exciting real-world gaming environment called questing at Boda Borg in Malden, MA., where
we tackle a variety of mental and physical challenges as well as playing several rounds of laser tag, as we learn
how lasers actually work.
The STEM-focused week will undoubtedly be memorable, informative, and inspirational as the group meets
physicians, engineers, and research scientists who are utilizing cutting edge science and technology on a daily
basis. Our goal is to offer students an opportunity to experience science, technology, engineering and math in
the real world.
