Black Velvet, led by Yohan & Honorine,continue to make their presence felt inthe music scene here – performing at
dances, weddings, private functions, etc.They count many years of experience, hav-
ing done their thing in Australia, Seychelles,South Korea, the Middle East, the Maldives, andIndia.
The band revolves around Yohan &Honorene Fonseka. The rest of the membersare Ayesh Jayawardane (bass guitar andvocals), Dylan Biyanwila (drums and vocals),
Udara Jayakodi (keyboards and vocals), andVasantha Fernando (lead guitar and vocals).
Ayesh Jayawardane, they say, is a very talent-ed musician and the youngest son NihalJayawardane, who was a former member ofBlack Velvet.
Ayesh started his music career as a key-boardist and played in several leading bands,including his father’s band Staccato. They per-formed at a luxury hotel in Maldives.
Drummer Dylan Biyanwila is a very experi-ence musician. He performed as a frontlinevocalist with several bands and has also toured
Europe and the Maldives Udara Jayakodi, the keyboardist, performed
with Staccato, in the Maldives, for quite a fewyears.
Vasantha, the guy who plays lead guitar, hasbeen around for more than 15 years in the fieldof western music and has toured Europe andMaldives in the recent past.
Black Velvet has a repertoire which includescovers from the 60s to the current songs, takingin Sinhala, Hindi and Tamil as well.
They will be seen in action at several dancesand weddings over the next few months.

lost her battle withlung cancer at actressTippi Hedren’sShambala Preserve inrural California.
The big cat, namedThriller, used to live atthe King of Pop’sNeverland ranch inSanta Barbara,California, with herbrother Sabu.
When Jacksondeparted the ranch,after his child molesta-tion court case in 2006,his veterinarian askedHedren to take the tigers in at her sanctuaryin Acton. Thriller had lived there ever since.
She was 13 when she died on June 11th,
2012. The tiger hasbeen crematedand Hedren andher staff are plan-ning to hold a pri-vate service tosay farewell tothe big cat.
Hedren says shehas alwaysthought it strangethat Jacksonnever called tocheck on histigers or offer tohelp with the ani-mals’ upkeep.
She revealsshe sent a pack-age of photos ofSabu andThriller and t-shirts and othermemorabilia toJackson’s chil-dren a year afterthe big cats
arrived atShambala, but heard nothing
back.She says, “I just think it’s odd.”

The Melbourne scene,Down Under, seems to beoozing with Sri Lankan

Karunaratne, they say, is anemerging young talent. Herservices are sought by two out-fits in Melbourne – the bandTharanga, led by CameronColombage, and Solid Sri, ledby Samitha Jayathilleke.
Asuntha made her debut, onthe Australian stage, at the ageof 10, and that was in 1993, atSunil Edirisinghe’s“Sandakada Pahana” concert,singing “Monawada Mutthe,”with music maestro RohanaWeerasinghe.
Thereafter, she participatedin several other musical eventsheld in Melbourne, as a soloperformer, and was also fea-tured, singing chorus, formany popular artists from SriLanka, including W.D.Amaradeva, Victor Ratnayake,Nanda Malini, LakshmanWijesekara and NiroshaVirajini.
“Onna Sanda Payala,” asong well-known to the Sinhalacommunity in Melbourne, wasAsuntha’s first original song tobe released’ together with herdad’s (Rohana Karunaratne)song compilation – “MalYahane” – in 2000. She has alsoreleased her own Sinhalamusic album, “Sidanganawan”in 2005.
Her involvement inthe Melbourne band-scene began in early2001, with the band“Melbourne Ceylonese,”led by George Rodrigo.She is now a permanentmember of Tharanga(since 2002), while alsoperforming with SolidSri, singing English andSinhala classics andpop, as well as baila,Hindi and some Tamilsongs as well. Asunthahas also done her thingon stage with renownedsingers, like MariazelleGoonetilleke, KeerthiPasquel, Desmond deSilva, Ronnie Leech,and Rajiv Sebastian.
While she may havebeen busy, expandingher music portfolio,Asuntha Karunaratnehas graduated with aPhD in the field ofmedical researchethics from MonashUniversity.
