Diegetic Sounds

A sound which is made by the visual on screen. Examples;• voices of characters • sounds made by objects in the story

Non-Diegetic Sounds

Non-Diegetic sounds are sounds which the audience can here, and are not created by the visual on screen.Examples;• A soundtrack over an action sequence

Synchronous

Sounds which are synced with the visual which can be ambient (sounds recorded in the sequence of filming a scene) or the sound could have been dubbed.

Asynchronous

Asynchronous is when a sound is created but it doesn’t match up with the visuals. Example;A person talking without there lips moving

Sound Bridge

When the scene begins with the carry-over sound from the previous scene before the new sound begins. This can include the sound of the next scene begging before a scene has ended.Example;a quiet room to a busy street. The noise from the street will be heard before it is seen

Contrapuntal sound

• When the music or sounds used in the scene are inappropriate to what you are seeing.

Examples;Happy music when someone is dyeing in a hospital bed

Parallel

When the music you hear matches the scene you are watching.Examples;Happy music over a scene with people celebrating.

Soundtracks

• Music which is chosen to play along with the film to complement it and give it a certain feel. The music played is often to opposite of what you would expect the narrative to be.

Examples;• Fun music over a sad scene
