IntroductionThe Sound Librarian Ambient Spaces Collection is a unique approach to ambient and atmos sound effect libraries. This document provides details on each space recorded to assist production teams in selecting the most suitable sounds for their projects. Each entry includes

• An image of the recorded space• The dimensions of the recorded space• The filename of the recording associated with the written material

Each ambience recording is approximately 5 minutes long captured at 96KHz, 24 Bit. These recordings have been captured with a quad array of DPA 4023 microphones routed into a Sound Devices 788ST SSD. Each recorded space also includes an impulse response recording generated by firing a started pistol in the recording space. The impulse responses are also captured in 4 channel surround, but because of the extreme output levels of the starter pistol in some instances in the very small spaces there may be peaking in some channels, but there is always a clean example for each space.

The SpacesSound Librarian gained access to some incredible historically significant spaces that provided a wealth of potential for capturing ambient environment recordings. Each facility allowed for a range of different spaces to be recorded and some basic information about each location is included to provide context.

Pick-a-SpaceOne of the primary purposes of this document is to provide an easy way of selecting the sound files you might want to use. By browsing through the images and information in this document you can see spaces that might suit your purposes and select them based on what you see rather than having to audition hundreds of sounds to find the one you want. Your ears will always provide the best guide as to which sound sis the best for any particular purpose, but these images can go a long way to providing some inspiration for where to start.

Aradale AsylumOriginally known as the Ararat Lunatic Asylum, Aradale was commissioned to accommodate a growing number of “lunatics” in the colony of Victoria in the mid-1800s. Construction on the oldest buildings began in 1860, and over the years until it was closed in 1998, various additional buildings were constructed, creating a fascinating eclectic range of buildings from different eras.

Regent TheatreThe theatre was originally built in 1938. The design was one which was used nationally. The cinema comprised of 1 screen and seated 2100 people. During the war years there were a number of American troops who were stationed in Ballarat,

and in early 1939 the Theatre incurred a major fire which burnt the theatre to the ground. Rightly or wrongly, the blame for the fire was levelled at the American troops.

However with the aid of the troops the Theatre was fully restored to its glory, and continues to operate as a cinemacomplex to this day.

Note: Because of the large size of many of the Regent’s cinema spaces there are sometimes two tones and two impulses recorded to provide variation on mic placement

Daylesford ConventIn 1891 Archbishop Thomas Joseph Carr of Melbourne envisaged a "source of light and edification" for the Central Victorian community of Daylesford, Victoria. In 1892, the building was deemed appropriate for nuns and boarders and the Holy Cross Convent and boarding school for girls was opened. It was the first Victorian establishment outside of Melbourne by the Presentation Sisters. In 1904 the new chapel was completed and in 1927 the parlour, dormitory and music rooms were added.

Daylesford Convent is now an art gallery.

Mayday Hill AsylumMayday Hills Lunatic Asylum was the fourth such Hospitalto be built in Victoria, being one of the three largest. Mayday Hills Hospital closed in 1995 after 128 years of operation.

The asylum was surrounded by almost 106 hectares of farmland, making the hospital self-sufficient with its own piggery, orchards, kitchen gardens, fields, stables and barn.
