Diegetic- Sound that would be heard by the characters in the scene.

Non-diegetic- Sound that would not be heard in a diegetic/artifi cial world.

Synchronous- Sound that fi ts the movement of a scene or character.

Asynchronous- Sound that does not fi t the scene or movement of a character.

Parallel- Sound that fi ts the mood of a scene. Contrapuntal- Sound that does not fi t in with the mood of

the scene in contrast to the scene. Ambient- Background sound usually non-diegetic that fi lls

what otherwise would be unnaturally quiet patches in the fi lm.

Sound bridge- Sound or speech that is used to link shots together.

Sound motif- A sound/piece of music that we associate with a character or place.

Diegetic- A dog barking, or music through the radio. Non-diegetic- Sound track, voice over. Synchronous- Foots steps, speech that is in time with lip

movement. Asynchronous- Speech being heard after seeing the lips of

a character move. Parallel- Slow, quite music at a romantic moment between

two characters. Contrapuntal- Nursery rhyme playing in a horror fi lm. Sound Bridge- Speech that goes over the shots to show

something is happening at the same time.
