TERMINOLOGY
Diegetic sound- Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of the fi lm: voices of characters sounds made by objects in the story music represented as coming from instruments in the
story space ( = source music)Non-diegetic Sound - Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space. Another term for non-diegetic sound is
commentary sound.
DIEGETIC & NON DIEGETIC
Asynchronous sound eff ects are not matched with a visible source of the sound on screen. Such sounds are included so as to provide an appropriate emotional nuance, and they may also add to the realism of the fi lm
Synchronous sounds contribute to the realism of fi lm and also help to create a particular atmosphere.
SYNCHRONOUS & ASYNCHRONOUS
Parallel Sound- Parallel sound matches the action made on screen and can also be called synchronous soundContrapuntal Sound- Contrapuntal sound occurs when the music and visual elements play against each other, and are in contrast.
PARALLEL & CONTRAPUNTAL
Ambient sound- Ambient sound means the background sounds which are present in a scene or location. Common ambient sounds include wind, water, birds, crowds, offi ce noises, traffi c, etc.
Sound Bridge- Sound bridges can lead in or out of a scene, the sound from one scene is carried into the adjoining scene. E.g. A girl sits in a park, watching her dog run aroundin the autumn leaves, and the sound heard is that of a telephone ringing. The telephone is visible in the next scene.
AMBIENT & SOUND BRIDGE
Sound Motif - A sound eff ect or combination of sound eff ects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation or idea through the fi lm.
