SSOUNDING OFF

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your dedication over the years in bringing Soundings to the community. Your efforts, and those of The Bulletin, provide an important flow of information to Sea Ranchers.

And yet, there continues to be a missing link in communication, since we lack a platform for the Voice of the Members to be heard directly, to discuss issues amongst ourselves and provide response to our Association. Yes, we can have two minutes at the micro-phone when comments are permit-ted at public meetings. But those venues are not suitable for most Members, since 75 percent live off-Ranch. And in such controlled, formal settings most people avoid public speaking — studies show that 98 percent of Americans fear public speaking more than death. Why continue the pretense that we must be physically present at meetings in order to be caring, con-cerned, supportive Sea Ranchers?

We need an official communication vehicle to solicit input from our far-flung Membership. If communica-

tion continues to flow only from the few to the many, without an oppor-tunity for the thousands of individu-als in our Membership to discuss things with each other and respond to our Association, how will we develop community consensus on important issues?

Internet technology now makes it possible to facilitate community-wide discussions in new ways. My mind goes to volunteer no-cost ef-forts such as a Sea Ranch on-line forum (distinct from the unofficial TSRList e-mail group with a civil-ity-challenged reputation). Or per-haps an e-zine for Members’ letters, published on-line each week. But probably others have better ideas, and I would love to hear them.

Without robust two-way communi-cation, we reduce our opportunities for consensus building and devel-opment. Instead, we increase the unilateral promulgation of words, without the heart and soul of mean-ingful communication to foster real community.

CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT JANUARY 5 AND 6By Lee Kosso

Sea Ranchers and all area birders are invited to take part in the 11th Annual Sea Ranch Christmas Bird Count, January 5th and 6th, 2008. Although The Sea Ranch count is unofficial, we join birders in Audu-bon chapters nationwide in counting birds during the Christmas season. We do it for pleasure and to learn more about the birds in our area. It has become a popular event on the Sea Ranch attracting more partici-pants each year. Last year over fifty birders counted 113 species and 6,331 individual birds.

The count begins on Saturday morn-ing, the 5th, at 8:30am. Experienced birders will lead groups in the field to count and record all birds seen or heard on that day. If the weather on Saturday is stormy we will go Sun-day, the 6th. Ten designated areas of the Sea Ranch will be covered: Sea Ranch North Coast, South Coast, Mid Coast, Ocean Meadow North, Ocean Meadow South, East Mead-ow North, East Meadow South, For-est Ridge/Hot Spot, Golf Course and Mid Ranch Transect. On Sunday, January 6th, birders will meet at the Del Mar Center from 1-3 pm, to tally the count and share reports of special sightings.

An organizational meeting is planned for Thursday, December 27, 2007 from 10:30 to 11:30 am at Del Mar Center. It is important for participants to attend to sign up for the group of their choice and to meet leaders and learn starting times and locations for the Saturday count. Those who cannot attend this meet-ing may contact one of the leaders listed below for group sign ups and time and location information.

Everyone, beginners and experi-enced birders are welcome to join the count. Those not going in the

field are encouraged to stock their bird feeders and e-mail Diane at [email protected] so those birds can be included. Be sure to bring your binoculars, water and lunch on January 5th. Also, dress for all kinds of weather -- one year we

experienced sun, wind, rain, hail and thunder in one day and we still had a good time. For more information or questions you may contact any of us below.

See you at the Bird Count!
