The statistics are startling: kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States, causing more deaths annually than breast cancer or prostate cancer. One in nine adults has kidney disease, and most don’t know it. In the Washington, DC area alone, 700,000 people have kidney disease, 7,000 are on dialysis, and 1,700 are waiting for a lifesaving kidney transplant. The National Kidney Foundation is the leading organization in the U.S. dedicated to the awareness, prevention, and treatment of kidney disease. Proceeds from the gala support research, patient services, public and professional education, and organ donation awareness.
