This magazine is printed on recycled paper

his is my last column as General Manager of Vegas PBS. I joined your station in 1994. At the time Vegas PBS operated a single over the air channel 10 to 15 hours a day,  plus  four closed circuit channels for public schools from a  17,000 square foot building built for TV productions using film. People used phones just for talking to each other, cameras for photographs and paper maps for driving directions. TV pictures were almost square and, compared to today,  the images were  fuzzy. Dial

up AOL via telephone landline was the dominant email provider, but the US Post Office still delivered the most communications. VHS tape machines were used for home videos that were rented at a Blockbuster store. There was no iPhone, no Netflix, no Google, no Amazon. Today, Vegas PBS operates three over the air channels and another three Cox Cable channels 24 hours a day, plus 29 closed circuit school channels, a consumer internet service with over 3 million local views or streams every month, an online library for teachers with 500,000 digital resources that were viewed by students 28 million times last year, and an online adult education career courses and certification service that served nearly 10,000 people last year. We continue to innovate with informational telephone text messages for young parents, datacasting of building blueprints to first responders and live streaming of PBS KIDS workshops to childcare centers. All these new services originate from the nation’s first LEED Gold “television” building that we now more appropriately call our Educational Technology Campus. The pace of change in our industry over the last 26 years of my service has been as unrelenting as the population growth of our valley. Remarkably, the expectations of viewers remain the same. Our program content must be excellent, educational, thought provoking, inspirational, trustworthy and worth your time whether viewed when we schedule it on TV or cable, or you watch it when you choose on vegaspbs.org, Passport, Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, Roku, or an endlessly evolving array of alternatives. What a joy this job has been. Our community is known as an “early adopter” of new ideas and new technology. Perhaps inspired by CES and other conventions where the future is defined, or by our unparalleled resorts who have perfected the art of responding to changing consumer preferences, the viewers of Vegas PBS have embraced changes in how we deliver programs, and made generous gifts to maintain our program excellence even as it migrates to each new platform. Without such viewers, little of what we have accomplished would have been possible. Five governors have appeared on our debates, thirty  remarkable people have served on our licensing board, and over 100 on our fundraising board. I  am indebted to each of them for their insights, questioning, passion, investment and commitment to the cause of noncommercial, public service, educational broadcasting. Over 300 viewers have included the station in their estate plans and will add to an endowment fund that is ensuring quality programming for future generations. And dozens of corporations and foundations have joined the tens of thousands of members like you, who honor Vegas PBS with your annual support. Without such donors, little of what we have accomplished would have been possible.

As our gifted management team and talented staff welcome my successor, our community can be confident that your continued investments in quality programming will continue to educate, inspire and uplift our great community in good times and challenging times. I am indebted to our employees. So, thank you for being so supportive and encouraging of the station for the last two and half decades of growth and innovation. With your support Vegas PBS will continue to thrive within the remarkable future that evolving technology will create. It has been my honor to serve you. Thank you.

Why I Support Vegas PBS...

With the national and local 2020 elections rapidly approaching, it’s critical that Nevada residents receive the most accurate news and analysis. I rely on such programming as PBS NewsHour, Washington Week, Nevada Week and special programming such as FRONTLINE: The Choice 2020: Trump vs. Biden to help make my election decisions. During September, Judy Woodruff, Robert Costa and Kipp Ortenburger informed me about the candidates and began covering the debates. On September 29 and October 7, 15 and 22, I’m looking forward to PBS NewsHour's coverage and in-depth analysis of the Presidential and Vice Presidential debates. And on the big night, November 3, Vegas PBS will be there with all the election returns. As a viewer on my local channel 10, I look forward to the coverage during this election season. This coverage is among the reasons why I support Vegas PBS. It’s critical that everyone votes this year; as early as possible. Marty Gold is a long-time journalist, now retired and residing in Las Vegas.

The Land Rover Defender story began with the simple thought of creating an exceptionally capable off-road vehicle. Today, the New Land Rover Defender builds on the legacy of previous versions, but it’s a completely new vehicle that can confidently take you to some of the most remote places on earth—and back again.
