These identifications codes use only alpha character so as to prevent confusion with the Product Item Number when placed on parts. 4.1. Establishing Supplier Identification Codes 4.1.1. Cummins Inc. Entities Cummins, Inc. entities shall use the three alpha (3) character designation established for that entity by the Common Code Board. (Examples of these designations are CEP, CIC, CDC, MCP, etc.) 4.1.2. Non-Cummins Entities Non-Cummins entities shall be given a four (4) or five (5) alpha character identification code. These codes will be established for each entity based on that entities name and location. All entities requesting a new Supplier Identification Code will be given a five (5) alpha character identification code based upon the procedure defined later in this specification.     The following specification defines the rules and methodology for supplier identification codesthat are placed on Cummins Product Items for use by Cummins Engineering, Manufacturing andSupplier Quality.

    2. Applicable Documents

    3. Definitions

    There are no unique terms in this standard. Terms used in this standard that have a generaldefinition for usage in Cummins Engineering Standards are defined in CES 10056, Glossary.

    4. Specification

    This Administrative Specification defines the rules and methodology for the establishment and useof Supplier Identification Codes. These identifications codes use only alpha character so as toprevent confusion with the Product Item Number when placed on parts.

    4.1. Establishing Supplier Identification Codes

    4.1.1. Cummins Inc. Entities

    Cummins, Inc. entities shall use the three alpha (3) character designation established for that entityby the Common Code Board. (Examples of these designations are CEP, CIC, CDC, MCP, etc.)

    4.1.2. Non-Cummins Entities

    Non-Cummins entities shall be given a four (4) or five (5) alpha character identification code.These codes will be established for each entity based on that entities name and location. All entities

    requesting a new Supplier Identification Code will be given a five (5) alpha character identificationcode based upon the procedure defined later in this specification.

    4.2. Use of Supplier Identification Codes

    4.2.1. Critical Product Items

    For Product Items having a noun name controlled by CES 10012 - Approved Supplier Listing ofCritical Items, a Supplier Identification code must be established for all approved sources andplaced on all Product Items.

    4.2.2. Non-Critical Items

    Non-Critical Cummins Product Items do not require a Supplier Identification Code be establishedfor each source. However, if a supplier or Cummins wishes to have an identification codeestablished for that supplier, it is permissible.

    4.3. Procedure for Establishing Supplier Identification Codes

    The following procedure shall be used for establishing the five (5) character Supplier IdentificationCodes for Non-Cummins entities. The responsibility for the issuance of these codes is within theEngineering Standards organization of Cummins Inc.

    4.3.1. First Four Characters

    The first four (4) characters shall be unique to each supplier by the supplier's location. The alphacharacters used within the first four places will be issued randomly with no significance to thecharacters starting with 'AAAA'. The Engineering Standards organization will keep a log as towhich code is given to each supplier. The letters 'I' and 'O' will not be used in the establishment ofany code to prevent confusion with the numbers '1' and '0.

    4.3.2. Fifth Character

    The fifth character of the Supplier Identification Code will identify the supplier's country of origin.The following listing defines what letters shall be used for the supplier's country of origin.

    4.4. Supplier Identification Code Listing

    The list of the supplier codes can be accessed through the IMS Screen (EFED CEC). This screenwill provide users with an electronic listing of supplier names, their addresses, and theiridentification codes.
