Why IoT needs standardization
IoT solutions are developed by a wide range of providers promoting their proprietary approaches. This can severely impact interoperability.
With the expansion of the IoT, there is now an increased need for interoperability of many different systems and platforms.
Fear of vendor lock-in causes hesitation when considering investment in larger systems consisting of non-standardized devices.
Without standards, the IoT will be stuck on isolated islands and this will hamper its expansion.
Security has often been overlooked so far, but it will be crucial in the future. Different security solutions can lead to further fragmentation and even more isolated islands!

SESKO IoT activities
Unlike other ISO/IEC JTC 1 subcommittees, IEC has the lead in SC 41. Therefore SESKO is responsible for organizing the work in Finland.
SESKO has established a national mirror committee for ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 41, called SK JTC 1 SC 41 IoT.
Members can contribute to the international work and influence the content of the standards by
- joining the working groups (recommended!)- commenting on drafts.

Transport interoperabilityISO/IEC 21823-2 ED1 working draft defines network connectivity as the ability to exchange information as bits and bytes, assuming that the information exchange infrastructure is established and the underlying networks and protocols are unambiguously defined.
In the title of the draft “network connectivity” was recently replaced with “transport interoperability”, which is presumably the new goal.

Semantic interoperability
ISO/IEC 21823-3 ED1 deals with semantic interoperability Semantic interoperability is achieved when interacting
systems attribute the same meaning to an exchanged piece of data, ensuring consistency of the data across systems regardless of individual data format.
This consistency of meaning can be derived from pre-existing standards or agreements on the format and meaning of data or it can be derived in a dynamic way using shared vocabularies either in a schema form and/or in an ontology-driven approach.

Trustworthiness
Trustworthiness is the degree to which a user or other stakeholder has confidence that a product or system will behave as intended.
Traditional security model CIA (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) is considered lacking something in IoT applications.
Trustworthiness encompasses security, privacy, safety, resilience and reliability.
