What Is Energy ?
Energy is defined as capability to do work.
Energy is required to do anything
Energy has many forms.
It can be changed from one form to another.

Fossil Fuels - COAL
• Scientist believe that coal was made from the remains of plants.
• The energy obtained by the burning of coal is more that of wood
• Coal mainly consists – Carbon• It also consists of – Hydrogen,
Oxygen, Nitrogen, Sulphur.07/03/2014 6SOURCES OF ENERGY

Fossil Fuel• A long time ago, plants animal got
buried into the earth. Due to the effect of tremendous pressure by the layers of Earth above and heat inside the earth the got converted into fuels.
• It takes lakhs of years for fossil fuel to be formed.
• Fossil fuel are found in three form- Solid Liquid gaseous07/03/2014 7SOURCES OF ENERGY

FOSSIL FUEL – NATURAL GAS
• It also forms like the Mineral Oil• It consists mainly methane (95%)
with small quantities of ethane and propane(5%).
• It burns without any residue• Also it does not produce any
smoke

Fossil Fuel – Mineral Oil• Mineral Oil is found nearly 25,000
meters deep in the bowels of the earth.
• Mineral oil is also called as ‘Petroleum’ or ‘Crude Oil’.
• Petrol , Diesel , kerosene , Bitumen are some of the products of petroleum.

RENEWABLE RESOUCES• Renewable energy is generally
defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind.
• In simple word, Renewable Resources are those resources which are unlimited.

1. Solar Energy• Solar Energy is used since thousand
years in different ways like: cooking , drying, heating and now for electricity generation
• It is also used in space where there is no other energy source
• Solar energy is energy that is present in sunlight.
• It is cheaper to make electricity by solar energy rather than coal and other things .07/03/2014 13SOURCES OF ENERGY

2. Wind Energy• Wind power is the conversion the energy
of wind into a more useful form of energy, like electricity.
• The wind has kinetic energy (movement energy) which is changed into mechanical energy by the blades on the turbine. The turbine then turns a generator which creates electrical energy (voltage)

Non Renewable Resources• A non-renewable resource is a natural
resource that is used up faster than it can be made by nature.
• It cannot be produced, grown or generated on a scale which can sustain how quickly it is being consumed.
• Once it is used up, there is no more available for future needs
• For e.g. :-Coal, Natural Gas ,Mineral Oil07/03/2014 17SOURCES OF ENERGY

Atomic Energy• Atomic Energy is the Energy produced by the
bombarding of the uranium atoms.• The heat and energy produced by this is then
converted into electricity.

Conclusion• Energy is required to do any thing.• Resources are limited so we should use it
carefully• We should use more solar and wind energy
than fossil fuels.
