HIGHSCHOOL HOCKEY The Souris Sabres were in a tournament on December 8th and 9th. They got the early draw on Saturday, playing Melita/Waskada at 9:30 a.m. and came out with a 2-1 victory. Lance Bartel opened the scoring and skilled sniper Seth Walker took over from there, netting the game-winning goal. In the second game of the day they played the hometown Killarney Raiders. A handful of dedicated fans made the drive out to support the team and the Sabres played very well. But, with a minute left Killarney got the go-ahead goal and handed the Sabres a 3-2 loss. Brayden Rolfe and Lance Bartel scored for the Sabres. Sunday was another early morning game, this time against a very strong team from Kenora. The Sabres played one of their best games of the season but again gave up a costly goal late in the game, this time with 3 seconds left. Rhett Dodds scored the lone Sabres goal in the 2-1 loss.

The Sabres dropped a pair of league games on the December 14th weekend. The Sabres gave the Rivers/Elton Rage their first win of the season. Lance Bartel and Matt Williams got two goals each in the 6-4 loss. On Saturday night the Sabres came out much stronger against Crocus Plains. Lance Bartel and Matt Williams provided all of the offence, earning their paycheques for the week!! In the end, the Sabres lost a nail biter – 4-3 in overtime. BASKETBALL Varsity Boys The Varsity Boys played Hamiota Huskies on December 12th. They played a great game losing 52-47. Our top scorers were Colin Carr and Tyson McRae with 10 points each. Great job guys! The Varsity Boys lost a tough one Tuesday night to Boissevain 60-49. They were a little cold on the free throw line, sinking 5 out of 25 shots. Our leading scorers were Micheal Gohl with 17 points and Blair Penno with 14. Our top rebounders were Colin Carr with 11 defensive rebounds and Nathan Greig with 7. Good try guys! On Wednesday the team defeated the Hamiota Huskies 59-41. The top scorers were Sebastian Gohl with 16 points and Tyson McRae and Michael Gohl with 14 points each. Our leaders in defensive rebounds were Nathan Greig with 6 and Sebastian Gohl with 4. Great Job Boys! Next action is January 8th when the boys face the Virden Golden Bears at home. Varsity Girls The varsity girls basketball team were in action last weekend in Brandon. The competition was stiff in the round robin event as the girls faced Neelin, Hamiota, and Massey. The girls played well and improved throughout the weekend although

Page 3: Souris School Newsletter Dec. 21, 2012

they dropped all three games. Emily Tuttosi averaged 9.3 pts/gm, while Chanel Becker averaged 6 rebounds/gm.

On Tuesday the team traveled to Killarney to open up Zone 9 league play where they posted an impressive 79-8 victory. Sara Palsons 15 points led the ladies and 4 blocks, while Emily added 14 and 8 steals. Mac Rowat, Jessie Robbins, and Alissa Swaenepoel all chipped in with 8 points. The girls are off for the holidays before hosting their home tournament, The Sabres Shootout, January 11/12.

JV GIRLS On December 14th the JV Girls Basketball team defeated the Neelin Spartans. The Sabres played an outstanding game, which included 37 steals, and great shooting from the field. Jamie Sherritt led all scorers with 30 points while Kaylee Butterfield led the team in rebounding with 8 boards, Jaedon Cooke posted the team’s first double double, with 12 points and 11 steals. The team travelled to Neepawa last weekend to compete against some of the top JV teams in the province. The girls started off their weekend strong, with a 61-11 win against Neelin. Top scorers in the match were Niamh McKenna with 12 points and Courtney Roy with 10 points. Player of the game was given to Jaedon Cooke. The girls then faced rival Grandview Spartans. Despite great play, the girls just couldn’t get by a tough zone defense, and lost the match 54-45. Jamie Sherritt received the Player of the Game award in that match. On Saturday, the girls played in the 3rd place game against a strong Virden team. It was a great battle but the Sabres came out on the losing end, giving them a 4th place finish for the weekend. Niamh McKenna was named player of the Game in

the match Congrats girls on a well played weekend.

Ed's Garage Coming to Souris!

“Wry, witty, and wonderfully funny” –The Beat Magazine "The perfect remedy for whatever ails audiences.” –Wellington Advertiser

Ed can fix just about anything – an old truck, a stubborn boat motor, even people’s problems. The folks of Port Petunia flock to Ed’s Garage for oil changes and sage advice. Everything’s running like a well-oiled machine until a psychotherapist from the city sets up shop next door, throwing a wrench into the whole business. Actor Rod Beattie, writer Dan Needles and director Douglas Beattie (of the Wingfield series) return with this light-hearted comedy. For over 40 years, MTC has taken live theatre to communities throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. This season MTC and Manitoba Lotteries proudly present "Ed's Garage".
