History South Africa declared itself a republic in 1961. In 1960, 70 black protestors were killed in a
peaceful demonstration in Sharpsville. The African National Congress(ANC) was
banned. Leader Nelson Mandela was jailed in 1964. The ban on the ANC was lifted. Nelson Mandela
was seel after 27 years i.e. On Feb, 1990. Blacks were not allowed to vote.
