There is one short section of temporary route on the A4012 Leighton Road between Eggington and Leighton Buzzard where there is no provision for cyclists – please take extreme care here. The route can be ridden ‘end to end’ or in parts, perhaps as part of a local circular route. From just south of Airport Way, beside the Lower Harpenden Road (B 653), National Cycle Network Route 6 follows cycle lanes to Parkway railway station at the south eastern fringe of Luton. Plans to construct the entire route from Harpenden to Luton are at an advanced stage and works will be undertaken as and when funding is secured; a small traffic free ‘there and back’ section at Airport Way will be completed during summer 2008. In Luton, the route passes directly through the town centre following traffic free paths, bus lanes and on-road cycle lanes where it forms the central spine of the Luton Area Cycle Network (see associated leaflet 1). To the north of Luton, the route passes beside Wardown Park with formal lakes where an award winning museum depicting the social history of Luton will be found, through Fallow Field County Wildlife Site and along Riverside Way, a riverside parkland where various artworks from the Sustrans ‘Art and The Travelling Landscape’ programme can be viewed. Look out for ‘Layering of Time’ milestones with poetry along the way, and the ‘The Blockers Seaside’ near to Leagrave railway station, both artworks are by public artist Isabella Lockett. There is also an extensive cycle network through nearby Marsh Farm (see associated leaflet 2). After passing under the railway at Sundon Arch, where Luton Borough Council and Sustrans hope to construct a dedicated pedestrian and cycle subway - a scheme within the Sustrans’ Connect project – National Route 6 continues through Houghton Regis and Dunstable. There is a predominantly traffic free link to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital running in parkland parallel to the M1 motorway. To the west of Dunstable, the route joins the Sewell Greenway where this traffic free section provides a delightful route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders to escape into nature.
