2013 Chief Executive’s Report

Introduction

The first Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1599 in Marseille, France.i

Currently, there are about 13,000 chambers registered in the official World Chambers Network registry, and the chamber of commerce network is the largest business network globallyii.

The Chamber movement was founded in 1919 to serve world business by promoting trade and investment, open markets for goods and services, and the free flow of capital. The organisation's international secretariat was established in Paris and the ICC's International Court of Arbitration was created in 1923.iii

The South Canterbury Chamber is one of 29 in New Zealand which represents over 22,000 members around the country iv and elected its first president in 1906.

The strength of the Chambers is reflected effectively in New Zealand as we enjoy member organisations with strong supportive businesses. The strength of the National, Southern Cluster and even the single South Canterbury Chamber should not be underestimated. Its strength in advocacy work, its networking offerings and other services are very effectively leveraged; creating an unprecedented range of opportunities for businesses. Every year our board reviews the South Canterbury Chamber offerings, gathers feedback and sets direction for the following year. The 2012/2013 year has again been extremely busy and in this report the key areas of business are reported on. Membership At a four year high, Chamber membership stood at just over 470 members ranging from the smallest sole traders through to large corporations; herein lies the challenge to provide added value to each industry and each business. Events Networking remains one of the main reasons for joining the Chamber; hence opportunities have been created at many topical forums including:

BA5’s (Business after 5’s) – Goanna Design – ANZ Bank – Craighead Diocesan School – Heartland Technology – ASB Bank and Tennis South Canterbury – Aoraki Polytechnic – The Governor General visit – C-bay.
