SEA STORIES AND OTHER DIDDITIES

Gary Williams

This is a real, actual, true story. Charlie Hudson can verify it to be true, and Charlie always tells the truth after a double Dewers or two. If you

shipmates remember awhile back that Larry Cox was reported to be on his death bed at Roper’s downtown. Folks were calling Linda with condolences.

Now, Charlie and I, being sort of friends and SUBVET members with Larry, thought ‘Oh, my God, did you hear about Larry? He’s down at Roper in

Charleston. We better get down there right away.’ So, we jumped in my Honda Pilot and headed downtown. Charlie drove because when I drive I

make him sick. We arrived at Roper, pulled in the circular drive and pondered whether to pay valet parking for an additional $4.00 charge. After

discussion, we agreed to pay $2 each for the quick parking so we could hurry in to see Larry before he received his last transmission. Giving the keys

to the valet, we rushed into the atrium. We ask for Larry Cox’s room, and the front desk attendant said, “Oh, he’s already gone”. Well, Charlie and I

couldn’t believe it! We were sobbing and whipping our eyes. Larry’s gone. The desk attendant saw our sorrow and our grief and our submarine hats.

She said, “Maybe you guys would like to see Marvin Miller, a submarine sailor on third floor.” Charlie and I went up to see Marvin. We told him we

missed Larry Cox before he passed away and we did not want to waste our $4.00 valet parking ticket, so we came up to see him. Marvin said Larry’s

demise must have been fast because he just saw him checking out of the hospital about half-hour earlier. Charlie, being nuclear trained deduced* that

the attendant at the front desk meant Larry had checked out of the hospital, not died. As we headed back to Summerville, I said, “Damn that Larry.

What Gaul to checkout before we could see him.” Charlie replied, “The worst part is we’re out that $4.00 valet parking charge.” And, I said “and…at

least 2 gallons of gas, at $2.23 a gallon. That’s $8.46 invested in Larry Cox. Well, you guys will remember Larry’s demise was greatly exaggerated.

Larry lives and is a very High Potentate of the FRA. But, Charlie and I are still out $8.46.

*deduced. For non-nuclear trained shipmates except ETs, deduced means “logically figured it out”

FRA Bowling League

The FRA Bowling League will be starting in September. This is a mixed league and we bowl at

Marrington Lanes. We bowl on Wednesday nights at 1900 hours (7:00pm) starting on September 5th.

We’re scheduled to hold an organizational meeting on August 29th

at 1900 hours (7:00 pm) at the

FRA, Low Country Home to vote in officers and vote on bylaws.

If you have questions or wish to add yourself or team to our league call either Linda Cox at 843-

906-1790 or Darlene Hines at 843-824-2589.

NOTIFYING THE BRANCH WHEN A SHIPMATE PASSES AWAY

Our Chaplin, Bobbi Sutton is very good about searching for the passing of shipmates on the internet and arranging for our Two Bell Ceremony with the family. We want to honor our departed shipmate but sometimes we don’t get the notification from the family until there isn’t enough time to arrange the ceremony and get the word out to all our members. We are just requesting our branch members as they make their final arrangements to advise their wives or husbands to make a note in their wishes to notify our branch Chaplin as soon as possible our their passing so we can arrange for this honor to be performed at the church or funeral home. You can leave a note for her at the Home or call her at (843) 879-9473.

WE NEED MORE SEA STORIES - DO YOU HAVE A SEA STORY OR FIELD STORY TO TELL?

Are you enjoying our shipmate’s sea stories we are putting in our newsletter each month? We have had a great response in our request for sea stories but have come to only having a few left to use. Please send in your sea stories (your own experience, a military tale, poem or song) so we can have plenty to use in our future newsletters.

Please send us a story or two of your best memories and we will print them in our newsletter. Write a short paragraph or two and e-mail them to [email protected] with the subject line SEA/FIELD STORY FROM (NAME). You can also mail the stories to our home address (FRA Low Country Branch 269, Attn: Laurie Bailey, 99 Wisteria Rd, Goose Creek, SC 29445) or leave in the pass down log at the FRA Home in an envelope marked Attn: Laurie Bailey. These stories are history and we want to honor your memories by preserving them.
