TRANSCRIPT
Branch President’s Corner June brings us to the installation of our elected officers and the
celebration of our 20th birthday of our branch and unit. Boy, we sure have
grown in the last 20 years and have so much to be thankful for. We are a
very active branch and unit and can’t do all the events and ceremonies
without all the shipmates and auxiliary members volunteering their time to
get it done. Thank you all for everything you do. All elected officers’
names are listed on this page of the newsletter so congratulate and thank
them for serving.
I have been reelected to be your branch president again this year
and am honored to serve you all. I am also running for our regional Vice
President position so this will be an exciting and busy year for me. I will
really need your help so I don’t run myself ragged.
We will not have a monthly meeting in June so our next meeting
will be 1900, 19 July 2018. If you are a new member, please come so we
can welcome you properly.
See our calendar at the end of this newsletter for all events
happening at the Fleet! See you at the Fleet!

Sea/Field story Maureen Gonzalez HMC, USNR-R
My husband and I both joined the new “Volunteer Navy” together and enjoyed it immensely. After 10 years of active duty, our hearts were broken when the Navy decided that my husband must retire due to a major medical condition. Nothing we could do about it.
Now, I always wanted to be a Navy Chief wife, but realized that I would never have that opportunity now. So, my husband turned around and endorsed me to be the USN Chief in the family! From that time forward, I depended on his courage, his encouragement, his love for his family and me and his sacrifices to promote my new endeavor!
It took me 11 more years to retire and I did retire as a Chief.
At my ceremony, I presented him with his own USA flag, his own shadow-box and a fishing rod! I thanked HIM for HIS service, and I told him, he was officially retired since his wife was retiring! I knew he never received a real thank you for a “job well done” while in the Navy nor from the military. The military basically just kicked him out. No fanfare, nothing. Just a piece of paper in the mail stating an honorable discharge. No one from the military nor his command ever really thanked him. So when asked who my hero is, I tell them a forgotten sailor, my husband! This man is my HERO!

NOTIFYING THE BRANCH WHEN A SHIPMATE PASSES AWAY
Our Chaplin, Bobbi Sutton is very good about searching for the passing of shipmates on the internet and arranging for our Two Bell Ceremony with the family. We want to honor our departed shipmate but sometimes we don’t get the notification from the family until there isn’t enough time to arrange the ceremony and get the word out to all our members. We are just requesting our branch members as they make their final arrangements to advise their wives or husbands to make a note in their wishes to notify our branch Chaplin as soon as possible our their passing so we can arrange for this honor to be performed at the church or funeral home. You can leave a note for her at the Home or call her at (843) 879-9473.
WE NEED MORE SEA STORIES - DO YOU HAVE A SEA STORY OR FIELD STORY TO TELL?
Are you enjoying our shipmate’s sea stories we are putting in our newsletter each month? We have had a great response in our request for sea stories but have come to only having a few left to use. Please send in your sea stories (your own experience, a military tale, poem or song) so we can have plenty to use in our future newsletters.
Please send us a story or two of your best memories and we will print them in our newsletter. Write a short paragraph or two and e-mail them to [email protected] with the subject line SEA/FIELD STORY FROM (NAME). You can also mail the stories to our home address (FRA Low Country Branch 269, Attn: Laurie Bailey, 99 Wisteria Rd, Goose Creek, SC 29445) or leave in the pass down log at the FRA Home in an envelope marked Attn: Laurie Bailey. These stories are history and we want to honor your memories by preserving them.
