Montague Ave. Suite A-200 - North Charleston, SC 29418 Stingrays Host Swamp Rabbits Tuesday In Potential Playoff Clash Coming off a week that included four victories, the South Carolina Stingrays look to continue their winning ways on their march toward the postseason when they host their in-state rival, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Tuesday’s matchup will be the final regular season contest between the two clubs in the Lowcountry during 2019-20. There will be just one other meeting which will take place on the final day of the regular season for SC on April 1 at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. While the Stingrays continue to hold first place in the South Division standings with a record of 38-10-3-1 and 80 points, the Swamp Rabbits have slipped to fourth in the table with a record of 24-25-3-1 and 52 points. Although there are still seven weeks to play in the ECHL’s regular season, the matchup represents a potential first-round playoff series if the two clubs remain in the current positions. SC comes into the week allowing a league-low 2.23 goals per game while boasting the top penalty kill in the ECHL at 89.9%. Rays Complete Perfect Week With 3-1 Win Over Icemen Goals from Andrew Cherniwchan, Matthew Weis and Cole Ully were enough to get the South Carolina Stingrays their fourth win in five days on Sunday in a 3-1 defeat of the Jacksonville Icemen at the Veterans Memorial Arena. Rays’ goaltender Parker Milner made the start for the second straight day and earned the first star of the game with 16 saves to pick up his fourth straight win and 18th victory overall during the 2019-20 season. Weis (1g, 1a), Ully (1g, 1a) and Dan DeSalvo (2a) each registered two points for SC. Rookie forward Liam Pecararo was leadinghis team in scoring before a lengthy call-up with the SpringfieldThunderbirds took him out of the Swamp Rabbits lineup, butnow he has returned to the fold and has 35 points this season on19 goals and 16 assists. Team captain Michael Pelech is leadingthe club with 43 points on the year (12g, 31a), while PatrickBajkov has stepped up his game and has 38 points on 19 goalsand 19 assists. Veteran Nathan Perkovich has also made a bigcontribution offensively this season with 36 points on 15 goalsand 21 assists. Second-year netminder Jeremy Helvig has seenmost of the minutes in goal recently and has a record of 13-13-2in 29 appearances this season with a 0.905 save percentage.

All-Time History vs. Greenville South Carolina has an overall record of 73-37-10-10 in 130 all-timeregular season meetings with the Swamp Rabbits. The Stingraysfinished with a 5-3-1 record against their in-state rivals after nineregular season meetings during 2018-19. The year prior in 2017-18,SC was 9-2-1 against the Swamp Rabbits. Tuesday’s contest isthe eighth of nine matchups between the two during the 2019-20 year, with the Rays winning four of the first six.

Weis Washes Away The Competition South Carolina forward Matthew Weis had 11 points in four games last week on three goals and eight assists, which was the most of any player in the ECHL. His best game came in the team’s 9-1 win in Norfolk on Wednesday when he notched six points on two goals and four assists along with a +6 rating. The 6-point game is tied for the second-highest scoring output from an ECHL player this season. Weis has now posted assists in five consecutive games and has totaled 35 points this season in 33 games on 10 goals and 25 assists.

Cherniwchan Riding 5-Game Goal Scoring Streak Team captain Andrew Cherniwchan is on a 5-game goal streak after scoring in all four of SC’s contests last week and totaling five goals overall. That run is the longest active goal-scoring streak in the league and his 25 goals on the season are tied for second-most in the ECHL. He also ranks second in shots on goal with 178, second with four shorthanded goals, and fourth with a +29 rating.

Ully’s Impressive Week Forward Cole Ully had points in all four of South Carolina’s wins last week, including three multi-point outings. The Calgary, Alberta native is on a 5-game point scoring streak and had big nights on Wednesday in Norfolk (one goal, three assists) and Saturday at home against Greenville (one goal, two assists). During Saturday’s game, Ully batted a puck out of the air and into the net during the second period for his ninth goal of the year and then assisted on captain Andrew Cherniwchan’s tying marker before setting defenseman Eddie Wittchow free on a breakaway for the game-winner in overtime. Overall on the season, Ully has collected 42 points in 43 games on 10 goals and 32 assists.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYLeaders Against Greenville In seven prior games against the Swamp Rabbits this season, defender Tom Parisi leads the Rays in scoring with six points on four goals and two assists along with a +4 rating. Forwards Mark Cooper and Cole Ully have also contributed five points apiece. Cooper has two goals and three assists, while Ully has a goal and four helpers.Goaltender Parker Milner is 3-0-0 against the Swamp Rabbits this season, posting shutouts in his first two appearances on Nov. 8 and Dec. 14. Milner has a GAA of 0.99 against Greenville.

Milner Continues His Excellent Play Stingrays goaltender Parker Milner leads the ECHL with a goals-against average of 2.00 after 25 games played this season. He is also 4th-best in the league with a save percentage of 0.927. After going 3-0-0 last week, Milner’s overall record on the year is 18-3-2-1 and the Pittsburgh native leads the league with seven shutouts.

Wittchow Looking Strong In Return Defender Ed Wittchow was reassigned to South Carolina by the Hershey Bears on Thursday and has been a force on the blueline for the Stingrays in his first three outings since returning to the team. Despite not factoring into the scoring during Friday’s win, Wittchow was noticibly strong carrying the puck while playing a shut down defensive game. Then on Saturday, he had the first assist on Cole Ully’s second period goal before converting on a breakaway in overtime for his fourth goal of the season which gave SC the victory.

Coming From Behind Saturday’s 4-3 win over Greenville was the first time during the2019-20 season that the Stingrays came from behind to win a gameafter trailing at the end of the second period. Prior to Saturday, SChad gone 0-7 when behind after two frames.

Stingrays Fly Past Swamp Rabbits In OvertimeEddie Wittchow didn’t score on his first chance in overtime, but he made his second opportunity count to give the South Carolina Stingrays a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits during Superhero Night on Saturday at the North Charleston Coliseum. Cole Ully led the way on the offensive end for the Rays with a goal and two assists in the victory, while defensemen Wittchow and Tom Parisi each had a goal and an assist and forward Matthew Weis earned two assists. After allowing a late goal with under two minutes left in the third, Parisi responded to tie the game at 3-3 just 44 seconds later off a feed from Weis.

Rays Get Sweet Ending In Valentine’s Day WinAndrew Cherniwchan scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime to give the Stingrays a 4-3 victory over Adirondack on Valentine’s Day Friday night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
