WELCOMETOSOUTHCURLCURLNIPPERSThishandbooksetsoutinformationabouttheNippersprogramatSouthCurlCurlSurfLifeSavingClub.Itisusefultobothparentsthatareconsideringsigningtheirkidsup,aswellasrenewingnippers.SouthCurlCurlSurfLifesavingClubwillbeturning100yearsoldin2018andisstillgoingstrong!OurNippershaveenjoyedwonderfulgrowthoverthepastfewyearsandwecurrentlyhaveover400blue,yellow&whitecapsrunningaroundourgloriousbeacheachSunday.Likeallsurfclubs,SouthCurlyisveryfamilyorientedandthefocusisprimarilytoensurethatourNipperprogramissafe,funandeducational,notonlyforthechildrenbutalsofortheMumsandDadswhojoinusonSundaymornings.WeprideourselvesonmakingNippersaccessibletoallandprovidingopportunitiesforallNippersregardlessoftheirabilities.Weencouragekidsto“haveago”atNipperssessions,trainingandcarnivals(ifwehaveenoughofficials,anyeligiblechildcanentercarnivals),andwehaveanAdditionalNeeds(Rippers)groupthathasbeenrunningsuccessfullyforanumberofyears.Sociallyweareveryactive—lookoutforourinfamousBBQ’sonthedeck,TwilightSippersonthedeck,LakeTabouriecampingtrip,andotheroccasionstogettogetherandhaveachat.

Theagegroupforyourchildiscalculatedfromtheagetheyare,onorpriorto30Sept.Forexample,ifyourchildis11onthe30thSeptember,theywillbeintheUnder12agegroupfortheseason.

13 Under 14 Whilstweunderstandthatthekidsliketoparticipatewiththeirmates,SurfLifeSavingstatesthateachchildshouldparticipateandcompeteintheircorrectagecategory.Regardlessofachild’sskilllevelorability,theymaynotbecoveredbyinsuranceiftheydonotcompeteintheircorrectagegroup.Thisalsoaffectsyourchild’sabilitytoreceivecertificationsofachievementandattainmentduringtheseasonastheSurfguardSystemwillonlyrecognisethemintheircorrectagegroupcategoryandtheclubwillnotissueawardstothosenotinthecorrectagecategory.So,weaskthatyoupleaseencourageyourchildrentomakenewfriendsintheircorrectagegroup.

PARENTSRUNNIPPERS!TheCluboperatesentirelyonvolunteerhelp.Therearemanyjobs,andformostoftheseyoudon’tneedsurflifesavingexperience!Itisourexperiencethatthemoreyougetinvolved,themoreyourchildwillenjoyNippers.Rolesthatparentscanhelpwithinclude:

BRONZEMEDALLIONANYONE!Atthebeginning,andduringtheseason,trainingisarrangedforanyparentinterestedinobtainingtheirBronzeMedallion.TheBronzeMedallioncoursecanbeoneofthemostrewardingcoursesyoucanattempt.OncequalifiedithelpsusmeetourwatersafetyrequirementsasSLSAmandatesthatnipperswatersafetymustbeperformedbyproficientBronzeMedallionholders.

SPEAKINGOFAGEMANAGERS!IfyouwouldliketohelprunSundaymorningevents,pleaseletusknow—wealwaysneedkeenpeople.Anylevelofinvolvementisusefulbutparentswhocanregularlyhelpoutaremuchappreciated.Ifyouhavepreviousexperienceand/orBronzeMedallionthisisanadvantagebutnotessential.

SOUTHCURLYALLABILITYRIPPERNIPPERSPROGRAMRuninconjunctionwiththeCerebralPalsyAllianceatAllambieHeights,SouthCurlyisveryproudtoofferamodifiednipperprogramforchildren&youthwithadditionalneeds.Theprogramhasbeendevelopedtoallowinclusionforallchildren&youthaged5to15andaimstoteachthefollowingskills:

• surfawarenessand• beachsafety

The sessions will also include fun activities such as:

• beachraces, • flags, • wadeandswimraces.

As members of this group become more confident in the water, they learn skills to be able to use nipper surfboards and catch a wave or two to shore.

TheRippersgrouparesupportedbyvolunteersfromSouthCurlCurlSurfLifesavingClub,howeverfamilymembersareactivelyencouragedtoparticipatewiththeirchildsoeveryonehastheopportunitytoshareintheexcitementaseachmembermastersnewskillsthroughouttheseason.

SouthCurlCurlencouragemembersof‘Rippers’tojoinintheiragemainstreamgroupiftheywishandarewelcometoparticipateinbothgroups.Ourmainfocusistomakesuremembersareactivelylearningwhilsthavingfun!

TheteameventslikeBeachRelay,BoardRelay,CameronRelay,andBoardRescueareagreatwayforthekidstogetinvolvedasagroup.Wedon’thaveselectioncriteriaforcarnivalteameventsbutyourattendanceatregularnippersandteamtrainingmaybeconsideredifwehavealimitednumberofteams.Theonlyrestrictiontoenteringnippersincarnivalsisthatweprovide5officials.Roughlythisequatesto1.25officialper10nippersweenter.Asmanytheclub’scurrentofficialsnolongerhavingkidsinnippers,theyhavestoppedofficiatingatjuniorcarnivals.In2017/18weURGENTLYneedmorecarnivalofficialsforournipperstocontinuetobebenefitingfromtheseorganisedevents.Thecarnivalofficialcoursehasnopre-requisitesandisopentoanyone.Furthermore,youcanpicktheareainwhichyouwishtoofficiateonthedayandyouhavethebestbeach-sideviewofwhat’sgoingon.Withregardstootherinformationoncarnivaleventsandentries,pleaseseeourNipperSurfSportsManual.Toensurethatthisisasmoothprocessforallinvolvedweallhaverolesandresponsibilities,sopleasereadthemanualtocheckwhatyou(asaparentofacompetitor)arerequiredtodo.

Family is assumed to be up to 2 adults and their children who are Under 18 or full-time students.

Bronze Medallion Course Fee includes probationary membership, manual, medallion & training.

New Gym Memberships are only available to patrolling members and subject to availability.
