During the first round of the French presidential election, the entire nation seemed to shudder as the key concern emerged: will pro-European forc-es succeed in protecting shared achievements, or will anti-European campaigns dominate political realities?That same day, over a hundred artists from the Eu-ropean candidate countries in the Balkans gath-

ered in Brussels’ Grand-Place for the closing ceremonies of the Balkan Trafik festival. It was stirring to witness these ancestral foes, side by side – Serbs, Albanians, Macedonians, Montenegrins, Bosnians, Kosovars – eager to be ad-mitted to Jean Monnet’s “common European home.” The tectonic shifts that have rattled the very foundations of this home over the last few months will doubtless mark world memory. I wonder: who will lead the funeral cortège for the idea of Europe – the large states, or that assemblage of small countries still believing in the viability of the European ideal?This was the central issue debated by a dozen academics who came together during this influential Balkan “extra-mural” event, soon to travel throughout Europe with the SEEFF (South East European Film Festival), now in its second edition in Berlin and in its seventh edition in Paris. The pro-European Balkan dream began to turn into a nightmare when, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, former Yugoslav territories were bloodied by brutal conflicts. Though long anticipated, the vision of a“normalized”, com-mon Europe grew to resemble a mirage. Our world has been profaned by the catastrophes that George Orwell pre-dicted. Today, although the victims of communism and fascism are known and cannot be disputed, there has yet to be a tally of the millions, more likely bil-lions, of victims of neoliberalism. The tyranny of global capitalism, encouraged by the new tenant in the White House, is forcibly dominating and destroying humanity, here and now. And with that, the idea of the construction of Europe. Rather than the Europeanization of the Balkans, a Balkanization of Europe is underway. The occult powers embodied by far right extremist movements de-monstrably threaten to bury the concept of universal love.Such preoccupations are clearly expressed in the choice of full-length feature films, animated films and documentaries from the 15 Eastern European coun-tries, on show during the SEEFF in Berlin (25 – 28 May) and in Paris (31 May – 3 June). I invite you to take this rare opportunity to check the heartbeat of a continent since, according to Nicolas Bouvier, “the heart of Europe is in the Balkans, and the mind of Europe between Paris and Berlin.”This year, as our Festival gains increasing visibility on the international scene, I cannot help but be reminded of the words of the noted Balkan archeologist and art historian, Branko Gavela: “Chained within the body, the human spirit grows out of matter, like a flower from the stone.”

Dear Friends of the South East European Film Fes-tival,

Films are messengers. They cross boarders with the ability of changing prejudice and opening eyes, minds and hearts for other cultures. The South East European Film Festival àBerlin is now in its third year and I warmly welcome you once again to a cinematic journey into the Balkan region of Europe.

It has become apparent that over the last years, that forces against a united Europe have steadily grown. The more important it is, that we focus on the things that connect us with each other and remain open-minded towards our differences. I have the following proposition: when you watch the incredible selection of films we have this year, watch as though you are looking through a window, not merely onto a screen. The films will show you life and culture in a way no other medium ever could.

SEEFF is a platform for exchange. It is a microcosm in which is possible what should ideally be happening all over Europe, all over the world - people learn-ing about each other’s lives and beliefs, without feeling threatened in their own. If we, people from more than 17 countries involved in the festival, reach out to each other and try not to hold on to our projections or judge, then we can make each other stronger in our effort of overcoming boarders and clos-ing gaps.

Help yourself, help others, help Europe in coming together - that is my wish for this year and the future of the festival. I am sure, that if we will be able to do this, others can do it too and so will Europe.

Festival Idea SEEFF à Berlin creates a platform for cultural exchange with South East

Europe. Therefore, film productions from 15 different countries, such as Al-bania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Cyprus, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldovia, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey are being presented in order to focus on a region, where Europe and it’s ideals are constantly questioned and in discussion.

Film as a medium allows a ruthless but also poetical insight of the reality and society life of these participating countries. Local film makers reflect on the people’s living conditions and the life scheme in their country of origin.

Bucharest, 1911. Grigore Ursaru, a nineteen year old actor thrilled with the emergence of the cinema, decides to become a director and make The War of Independence, a reconstruction of the 1877 struggle between the Romanians, Russians and the Turks, which led to Romania achieving its independence.

To realise this highly ambitious project to make «the longest fi lm ever pro-duced» and «to conquer the world», he wages an ideological, political and familial campaign to prove cinema has a promising future and is about to become an art in its own right. In an unequal yet ever changing society with extremes of poverty and opulence, his project is continually held up both by the local authorities and the big production companies like Gammoned. Con-stantly feuding with his father and in love with a frivolous and mercurial woman, the persistent young man does not however let his emotions get in the way of his dream.

Nae Caranfi l was born in 1960 in Bucharest, Romania. He is a writer and direc-tor, known for Der Rest ist Schweigen (2007), Closer to the Moon (2014) and Filantropica (2002).

BP Underground is a documentary fi lm exploring the underground youth subcul-tures of Budapest, Hungary in the 90s and 2000s, right after the iron curtain fell. The underground scene of Budapest and its musical subcultures are a vital and essential part of wider Hungarian culture. This fi lm deals with how these small scenes built bigger communities and how they affected our society – and still do to this day. It uncovers how Budapest contributed to this phenomenon.What were the unwritten rules of these subcultural groups? What were their unique symbols, special uniforms, legendary venues, and heroic fi gures. What’s the personal story behind all this? The directors, Anna Koltay and Esther Turan, as integral parts of these movements themselves, use their insight and access to bring untold stories to light: their story and one they share with many young Hungarians today.

Esther Turan is a founding member of Moviebar Productions; One of Hungary’s leading, award-winning fi lm production companies. As a Hungarian Film Acad-emy graduate and TV directing major she has turned towards producing and became a producer. She is deeply involved in the creative process of every pro-ject. Her experience includes a wide range of productions from auteur-driven no budget features and shorts, through major TVCs for well-known brands to Ameri-can and European feature fi lms and TV series.

Anna Koltay is an actress and director, known for Sacra Corona (2001), BP Under-ground (2017) and Julianus barát (1991).

A documentary about the cello improvisation duo Soma & Lil, based in Den-mark. It follows the discovery of their induvidual style, deviating from the tra-ditional written music for the cello. It shows their unique expression and their personal and ever-changing approach to compositon and music.

Nicolas Iordanou is a photographer and fi lmmaker, born in Paphos, Cyprus. He studied Photography at Columbia College Chicago.

Sylvia Nicolaides is an artist and fi lmmaker, she received her Bachelor’s Fine Arts Degree from Chelsea College of Art and Design (University of the Arts) London and her second Master’s Degree in Audio-Visual Studies in the Acad-emy of Performing Arts, in the Film and Television department (FAMU) in Prague, Czech Republic.

In 2013 they participated in the exhibition ‘Catharsis/Rebirth’ in Paphos, Cy-prus and co-directed a short fi lm presentation from it, which was selected and presented in the Louvre Museum in Paris as part of the Michelangelo Pisto-letto’s exhibition ‘Annee Un – Le Paradis Sur Terre’.

SHawaii is a story on the struggle of inheriting $3 million in communist-era Ro-mania when owning just $1 could already mean losing your freedom. It touches on the theme of how money, if not happiness, could at least buy the freedom to choose unhappiness.

Jesús del Cerro is a writer, producer and director born in Madrid (Spain). He started working in popular Spanish TV series like “Medico de Familia”, “Poli-cias”, “ Compañeros” and “Un Paso adelante” . This one was a huge success all over the world and was sold to more than 70 countries like Germany, France, Italy or Netherlands. In 2008 Jesús directed “Carlitos and the chance of the lifetime” his fi rst feature fi lm, it was a success in the Spanish box offi ce and won more than 20 international fi lm festivals like Giffony fi lm festival. In 2009 Jesús starts to work in Romania, over there he directed eight features fi lms and the documentary “Pregnant in Romania” In 2011 he won with “Nasa” the Gopo award to the most successful movie of the year in Romania. In November 2017 he will launched his last movie “Hawaii” with Dragos Bucur and Cristina Flutur. In 2018 he will launched his fi rst American movie “Attraction” fi lmed in Puerto Rico, Los Angeles and Paris with Chris Atkins, Tara Read and Dina de Laurentiis. Actually he is working in the animation movie “First Goal” that will be launched in 2019.

A disaffected mechanic and his unemployed wife experience days of uncer-tainty and fear after their teenage daughter suddenly disappears. Suspecting that she has run off with a stranger from the Internet, they begin a frantic yet futile search for her, receiving only perfunctory assistance from the local police. During the search, they are forced to recognize the deep sense of alienation that has separated them from their daughter and from one another.

Ardit Sardiku is an Albanian director and producer, having made several short fi lms, such as Sing in Me, Muse (2016), The War of Waves (2016) and Hapless (2013). Life Between the Waters is his fi rst feature fi lm as a director. He also worked on the visual effects of the 2017 horror movie Get Out.

SWhat’s that saying? The heart is where home is? Home is where the heart is? Vedran fl ed to Sweden alone from a war-torn Bosnia in 1992. Today he sees himself as Swedish, and he had no plans ever to return to Sarajevo. But then he is forced to re-visit his hometown 18 years after leaving it and is confronted with the memories of his childhood. Against his will, Sarajevo is changing him. But he is forced to return, and is confronted with the memories of his child-hood. A journey forcing him thinking about himself - who he really is.

Timur Makarević was born in 1976 in Jajce. He fi nished high school of applied arts and began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo. After the war, he left the studio and started working at the Soros Center for Contemporary Art in Sarajevo, where he still works. He was additionally educated in France and Italy. He has made several short fi lms, art video fi lms and many music vid-eos. His documentary Moderna Bosna won the award for the best fi lm of the Student Film Festival in Belgrade in 2001.Shoes is his third director’s work.

Greece now days. Seven different stories about seven persons who have al-ready reached their limits and fi nally fall apart. Despite their seemingly obvious connection they are simultaneously connected through a common desperate action: the last phone call to the psychological support center called “life line”. It’s their last hope. As no one can really help them, even then, they all remain another part of the contemporary Greek tragedy.

Vassilis Mazomenos is an acclaimed Greek writer, producer, director. Member of both the European Film Academy and the Hellenic Film Academy. Founder and director of Horme pictures, he is the director of eight feature fi lms and the producer of many shorts. Mazomenos works also as a production designer. Considered the most “special” than all Greek fi lm makers of his generation, known for his visual and artistic experimentation and his infl uences from the early German expressionism. His fi lms have been presented and awarded in many International festivals such as Montreal World Film Festival, the Inter-national Film Festival Of India, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, the Cairo International Film Festival, the Puchon International Film Festival in South Korea, the Sitges International Film Festival, the Belgrade International Film Festival, the Fantasporto Film Festival in Portugal, the Chicago Interna-tional Art house fi lm festival, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival , the Hellenic Film Academy Awards and many others.

When Aaron, an ex-fi ghter, turns to music after years of being knocked around and left with permanent mental disabilities, he falls for Jana, an off-centered Bulgarian immigrant living in New York. While he recognizes that she is as crazy as him, Jana does not share the same opinion. But her brother, Bobby, an up-coming wannabe fi ghter, decides to convince her she is, in order to get Aaron in the ring against him.

Niki Iliev is an actor and model, he followed the fi lm path taken by his father Bulgarian fi lm director Boyko Iliev. He was born on October 10, 1981 in Sofi a, Bulgaria and attended the New Bulgarian University, graduating in fi lm direct-ing. However, Niki changed paths and pursued acting instead of directing. Since 2003, Niki has enjoyed a steady run of several fi lm shorts and television outings and movies. He utilized his knowledge of fi lm-making for the 2012 fi lm The Foreigner which he directed.

SOut of the Woods is a black comedy about a particular woman in a particular country. Stojanka (62) lives in a small village in Banat, on the edge of the Deli-blato Sands. As with all her compatriots, her circumstances are wretched – a daily struggle to scrape out an existence and an even worse struggle to make sense of such a life.At one point in her past, Stojanka – like the country in which she lives – stood at a crossroads and took the wrong turning. Today, determined not to cry over spilt milk, she has survived, but has been unable to fi nd any happiness. Through the minutiae of daily life which follow one on another, always defying expectations, Stojanka uses every opportunity she can, to make clear decisions and follow them through in her own eccentric way. Sometimes she succeeds and sometimes she fails.But through all these events Stojanka realises that identity is not set in stone: it is a living process and it is never too late to repair what can be repaired. And not only for the benefi t of those on whom the world depends, but for one’s own.

Marko Kostic, born in Belgrade, Serbia, graduated Film and TV-direction on Faculty of Drama Arts in Belgrade. Director, scriptwriter, producer, lecturer, fi lm theoretician, blogger (www.markokostic.com). He was awarded for many times in Serbia and abroad. His fi rst feature fi lm The Paper Prince was screened at more than seventy international fi lm festival and won a total of thirteen awards. Besides fi lm, he works as director in theater and for televsion.

Müzeyyen is a young woman who lives a drug-fuelled, chaotic life outside the norms of society. Her brother Ali interrupts his own successful, bourgeois life in Bolu, and goes to Antalya to meet with his recently- discovered sister. There, the legitimate child - Ali - will be tested through unguessed - at sins, while the illegitimate one - Müzeyyen - will be tempted in turn by Ali’s hope.

Emre Erdogdu was born in 1990 in Bolu/Turkey. He dropped out college (Istan-bul Marmara University) and followed his goals. He always dreamed about cin-ema. After a few short fi lms and directing experiences, he wrote and directed his fi rst feature medium length fi lm “The First Day of Human History” in 2015 and his fi rst feature “Snow” in 2017.

SPetar is a retired detective and all he has left is his daughter Iskra. His pen-sioner’s days are interrupted when Iskra disappears. The pursuit to fi nd his daughter begins and the investigation takes Petar back to his past.

Gojko Berkuljan was born in Cetinje, Montenegro in 1990. He fi nished el-ementary and high school in that city. Considering his family’s preference for art, before the completion of the Elementary School he is awakened by an interest that will bring him to the entrance exam at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, to the Department of Film and Television Directing four years later. Dur-ing his basic studies, he made four short fi lms, two documentary fi lms, and after graduation a series of video spots and video works. He fi nalizes his fi rst long-length fi lm “ISKRA”, as well as being in the post-production stage of a documentary under the working title “Keepers of Our Treasures”. He is the winner of the Student Prize awarded by the University of Montenegro, as well as the Student Award of the City of Cetinje for 2011.

A story of a family and the pursuit of happiness in the world of business. Boris is a married man and a father. He works as an electricity technician in a large manufacturing company, the only member of his family to have a regular job. His wife, Vesna, is unemployed and cannot fi nd work except for short-term em-ployments. Boris harbours hope that not all is lost yet, dreaming of providing for his family and giving them a life free of worry. He fi nds incentive in the busi-ness model of Cosmica, a new kind of company dealing with sales, consulting and investments in securities. The company promises its members a chance to make some money on the side and a new hope sparks in Boris’ heart. However, success doesn’t come overnight and soon, Boris fi nds himself torn between the elusive idea of success in business and the needs of his family. Boris starts an affair that puts even more strain on his life, jeopardising his marriage.

Marko Nabersnik was born in 1973 in Maribor, Yugoslavia. He is a director and writer, known for Petelinji zajtrk (2007), Sanghaj (2012) and Pavle (2001).

What is the role of the Berlin process and the upcoming EU-Balkan Summit in London in July 2018 for the European integration process of the Western Balkans?

Jakob GašperinJakob Gašperin is researching national identity in the EU law in the light of European legal and politi-cal integration as a doctoral candidate at Humboldt University in Berlin where he also attained his master studies (LL.M.). Prior to that he had been studying at Utrecht University (the Netherland) and University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) where he had completed diploma law studies.Apart from being closely engaged with theatre he was a mem-ber of the amateur »small school of fi lm art« for several years and is continuously bewitched and committed enthusiast of the fi lm art. in American Horror Films of the 1970s (2009).

Nadin Celovic“All my life, I have been interested in the Balkan Culture as my family came to Germany in 1993, flee-ing the Bosnian War. Every single summer I have spent in Bosnia and in Serbia, sometimes in Croa-tia as well. The differences between Balkan Culture and German culture fascinate me to the point where I made that subject a main topic of my academic studies.

I have always loved theatre and all things related to acting. When I was younger, I participated in many drama class activities, from kindergarden to grade 12.”

In addition to this I am working with the UN Human Rights organisation ‘THINK EQUAL’. The organisation aims to bring human rights education to primary and secondary Schools. Brigitta MantheyAfter graduating in English / American Studies and Theater Studies, Brigitta Manthey was a longtime freelancer for the television play of Sender Freies Ber-lin and subsequently directed the fi lm department of the Literary Colloquium Berlin (LCB). She also worked on publications, as well as a lecturer, journalist and documentary fi lmmaker.Since 1995 Brigitta Manthey has been a speaker for fi lm promotion of the Medienboard Berlin-Branden-burg, responsible for co-productions with Eastern, Central and Southern Eu-rope and for the German-Polish Film Fund. Brigitta Manthey shared her previ-ous expertise as a long-standing member of the Talent Development Board of Kuratorium junger Deutscher Film (KjdF) and Filmförderung der Bundesr-egierung (BKM), as an expert on the European training program for fi lm pro-ducers EAVE, as well as in national and Eastern European festival juries. .

Nadine Micic Nadine Micic is a young actress from Sarajevo, who graduated from the Academy of Performing Arts Sarajevo in 2017 with her rendition of Lars Norén‘s “Demons’“, currently part of the Sarajevo Chamber theatre 55’s repertoire. During the course of her studies, Nadine took on roles in ‘“Drunks“ by Ivan Viripaev, Milan Ogrizovic’s “Hasanaginica’“, L.N. Tolstoj‘s ‘“Ana Karenina’“ and many more. Her pro-fessional cinematic debut was in Timur Makarevic’s fi lm “Nothing but the wind“‘ . Althought she is in the begining of her career, Nadine also secured a leading role in a feature lenght fi lm, Timur Makarevic’s “The lake“, the fi rst Bosnian horror. The fi lm is currently in post production. Loving acting and children made her lead several courses in theatre for chil-dren. Currently she is working on three theatre plays , wich are Fassbinder’s „The bitter tears of Petra von Kant“, Koljada‘s „Murlin Murlo“ and Nusic‘s „Folk deputy“‘.

Tzvetana Maneva She is one of the most famous Bulgarian actresses off all time. She was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Her father, George Manev, is an actor, too. Maneva fi nished her education in 1966. Her debut was in ‘Kaloyan’. First mar-riage was with the operator Nickolay Penchev. That relationship produced one daughter - Nadejda, born in 1969. She is known for movies like: ‘Avtostop’, ‘Dami kanyat’, ‘12 miga ot Tzvetana’ (which is a documentary movie about her), ‘Opasen char’, ‘Voynata na taralejite’, ‘Edna kaloriya nejnost’, ‘Izpepelyavane’ and so on. Mrs Maneva has also played in the theatre. Her famous appearances are in ‘Opera za Tri Grosha’, ‘Svekurva’, ‘Nora’, ‘Albena’, ‘Medeia’ and so on. For her 60th birthday the theatre director - Margarita Mladenova invited Tzvetana and another famous Bulgarian actress - Maria Kavardjikova to play in David Hare’s play ‘Breath of Life’ - ‘I Chovekut Stana Jiva Dusha’.

In memoriam Lucian Pintilie09.11.1933 - 16.05.2018

With grief we experienced the death of the Roma-nian cinema veteran Lucian Pintilie. A loss for the fi lm world and especially for our cur-rent edition SEEFF # 3, where Lucian Pintilie should be awarded as „See fi lm legend 2018” at the open-ing event. Now the award will hopefully keep awake the memory of him . The prize is awarded to him post mortem. The eulogy is held by the Ambassador of Romania H.E Emil Hurezeanu.

Lucian Pintilie was a Romanian fi lm director, actor and screenwriter. Pintilie stud-ied at the Bucharest Theatre and fi lm School and, after completing his stud-ies, staged numerous pieces at the Bucharest theater Bulandra. As an actor, he worked 1963 in the fi lm Valurile Dunării by the director Liviu Ciulei. His debut as a fi lm director was the movie „Duminică la Ora 6“.Reconstituirea” was his second fi lm in Romania. Directors such as Pintilie and Radu Gabrea represent the short but internationally acclaimed departure of the Romanian fi lm at the end of the 1960s. EV

He is principal investigator of projects on gender, language contact and language politics in the Balkans fi nanced by German Research Foundation and founder and editor of the series “Studies on Language and Culture in Central and Eastern Europe”. From 2008 until 2016 he served as vice-dean at the Philosophical Faculty II at Humboldt University.
