Workplace Learning Morning Tea

Workplace Learning has proved a very valuable contributor to both the college and the community. To celebrate this continued success, a morning tea was held in the college restaurant, Café on the Green, on Friday 6th September.

Host employers came from businesses: Bunnings Warehouse Belmont, The Good Guys, Coles, Learning Circles Play and Learning Centre, Cloverdale Primary School, Carolyn Hair Fashion, Hospitality Group Training, Total Digital Solutions, Ace Tutoring and 100.9 Noongar FM Radio.

Ascot Rotary have been a major supporter of the college over a long period of time and have been heavily involved in the Mock interview process. This process sees Ascot Rotarians as business leaders in the community acting as interviewers for all Year 11 and 12 Workplace Learning Students. The feedback the students receive is invaluable in helping develop the skills necessary when seeking job opportunities.

The Hospitality Program at Belmont City College continues to offer students opportunities to succeed. Many students each year celebrate a variety of success stories, from Sate Training Awards to National Vet Student Awards.

A recent recipient of a national award, The Australian Vocational Student Prize, is Hannalyn Villamor who graduated in 2012 with many Top Student Awards for various subjects, plus Top Hospitality Student and Top VET Student for Belmont City College. Hanna has continued to study in the area of Hospitality at Polytechnic West and is continuing to produce excellent results

As a Year 9 student at Pinjarra Senior High School, Riley Anderson was selected as an inaugural member of the Pinjarra Football Academy and he stayed with the Academy throughout Year 10 before choosing an individual learning program for senior school.

Riley began a Certificate II Electrotechnology Career Start through Profile with Challenger Institute of Technology in 2012. Riley juggled a part time job, Workplace Learning and his Profile class along with his other WACE courses throughout Year 11 and Year 12.

He had excellent results at the end of Year 12:

• English 2C/D – B grade • Workplace Learning 1 C/D – B

grade • Mathematics 2A/B – A grade • Photography 1A/b – A grade

In Year 11 Riley was one of the first students chosen for the Chevron – Powering into Careers pilot program. This is an endorsed program about careers and in particular, careers in the oil and gas industry. It consists of five endorsed units and one of those units is a camp away along with Chevron and school staff.

Chevron staff were so impressed with Riley’s outgoing nature, excellent leadership qualities and teamwork skills that he was very much sought after when Chevron advertised for apprentices. Riley has now successfully worked his way through the selection process with Chevron and will begin 2014 as a Chevron apprentice electrician.

We wish Riley the very best for his future and thank him for showing other students at Pinjarra SHS what can be achieved

Outdoor recreation is a much valued education program at Kent Street Senior School, with strong links to academic learning and pastoral care. It enables our students to develop confidence, resilience, leadership and adaptability and reinforces the values integrity, respect, teamwork and compassion inherent in all aspects of the Kent street experience.

The year 12 Certificate II course in Outdoor Recreation culminated with an expedition to Margaret River. This camping expedition gave students the opportunity to showcase their skills learnt over the course and from past expedition experiences. Highlights of this trip were mountain biking in the Boronup Forrest, adventure caving in Giants Cave,

canoeing the Blackwood River and the music, stories and laughs around the campfire.

Throughout the course the students worked towards attaining their, Bronze Medallion, Senior First Aid, Recreational Skippers Ticket, Level II Sailing and Community Surf Rescue Certificate. This makes this group of young people some of the most skilled and qualified of all graduates. These skills not only qualify them for the workplace and further study, but provide them with life skills to safely enjoy active recreation for life whilst assisting in preserving our natural environment.

I am so proud of what these students have achieved over the last two years. To witness the growth and successes of these students has very much been a pleasure and highlight of my teaching. I wish them well.

For the first time this year Rossmoyne SHS was a recipient to the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award for VET. Mac Henderson came to Rossmoyne in Yr 11 from a Private school which wasn’t meeting his needs and he was under achieving. Over the 2 years at Rossmoyne he completed a School Based Traineeship with PCYC across several centres around Perth, gaining a Certificate II and III in Community Services. He completed over 1000 hours in the workplace and was singled out by his employer for the work he did with disengaging youth. “He proved to be a very good role model to the group demonstrating enthusiasm, sound knowledge, and very good communication skills both to the trainees and admin staff. He guided a group of ‘at risk’ students and embraced all aspects of the program to ensure good outcomes. He worked extremely well with his indigenous students”.

Mack was a State volley baller who also completed a Cert I Business, Cert II Sport and Recreation and Cert II Coaching taking home a total of 3 VET awards from SCSA, National VET Awards (shared with students Jessica Beanham and Katie Bordas) and the Prime Ministers’ Award. He did voluntary work for Police Legacy and was involved at community level in local football. In his words he loved “taking on life’s challenges”. In August Rossmoyne won gold in Hospitality for the Worldskills Competition along with Bethany Parkin winning the VET Dux award for 2013

Mack Henderson winner of the Prime Minister’s award for VET in WA in 2013 for his outstanding

work in Sport and Recreation though a traineeship with PCYC.

One of the highlights for 2013 for Kalamunda Secondary Education Support was the successful completion of the YAT funded Certificate II in Warehousing Operations held in Maddington by four of our students. This 15 week course was a great opportunity for our students to learn skills in the warehousing industry which will further enhance their chances of successful workplace learning and ultimately, future opportunities for employment.

“Thank you” to Angela Kiely for her facilitation in ensuring all details of this course were communicated to all the schools and “thank you” to Stirling Skills Training Inc. for delivering this great course.

2013 school year saw Canning Vale College (CVC) commence its inaugural VETiS Hospitality Certificate I Program for students in Years 11 and 12 with Special Needs. While the program was facilitated at CVC, students from within the South Eastern District were invited to participate in the Hospitality Certificate I program from Armadale SHS ESC and Cannington Community ESC. A total of 16 students registered for the Certificate.

The theoretical content was specially adapted to cater for the needs and learning levels of the students without diverting from

the standards and practices

set out by VETIS

Consulting Services. The theoretical content was

broken up into very short 10/15 minute lectures and longer role plays and group work sessions. Group work sessions varied form two, three or four students per group as well as individual work sessions.

At the end of each core and elective units, a theoretical assessment of the students was undertaken. The assessment was broken down into three stages namely; Short Answer Question, Multiple Choice Question and True or False Statements.

The practical content was undertaken in the modern industrial kitchen facilities of CVC under the guidance and watchful eyes of fully trained and highly experienced Industry staff

members.

The program this year was concluded with a conducted tour of Perth’s 5 Star Hyatt Regency Hotel where students obtained a better understanding of the Hospitality Program and exactly how the different units within the program tie into the daily operations of international hospitality

establishments.

With the overwhelming response and positive feedback received from this year’s course CVC will be offering Hospitality Certificate I to the surrounding school again in 2014.

The VET Induction Day took place at the Hillside Church Auditorium on 22nd February. The day opened with a welcome by the VET Manager, Mrs Sandy Jamieson and the Principal, Mr Peter Noack. After the Welcome to Country by Mrs Cindy Garlett, students listened to the Keynote Speaker, Mr Brendon Lazaroo from the YMCA who is in charge of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Perth, a mentoring program for Young People. Yasmine Phillips, the Education Reporter from the Sunday Times provided insight into her pathway into her career in Media. This was followed by Senior Sergeant Walley Brierly, the Officer in Charge at the Forrestfield Police Station, who, in the light of Workplace Learning, discussed issues such as stealing as a servant, safety to and from work, impact of having a criminal record on career prospects.

Senior Sergeant Brierly also discussed career opportunities within the WA Police. Ice breaker activities, with emphasis on teambuilding, kept students alert in between presentations. Mrs Kate Sorensen was in charge of a fashion show. Teams were given newspapers and tape with instruction to create outfits. Mrs Sorensen then proceeded to demonstrate how to walk the catwalk like a model (watch out Miranda Kerr!). Each team was then judged and given a score. A round robin of industry representatives from the Defense Forces, Local Government, Logistics Training Council, Building and Construction, Sport and Recreation gave students exposure to their respective industries. The Oil and Gas industry was a last minute withdrawal. Hopefully they will be part of the induction day next time.

Mime artist Darian Le Page showed students the importance of communication through body language, facial expressions etc. Students clearly enjoyed learning from a professional judging by their enthusiastic involvement.

Over 2012/2013 South Metro region saw three winners in the VET Exhibitions. Matthew Loader from Willetton Senior High School in Tourism, Hospitality and Events and Alicia McGann from Darling Range Sports College in Sport and Recreation in 2012 and in 2013 Benita McGinty from Sevenoaks Senior College in Business Services.

Certificates of Distinction in VET were won across a variety of disciplines in our Region. A total of 14 out of the 23 awards came from South Metro schools (over 60%) plus the Certificate of Distinction in WPL was awarded to Bethany Parkin from Rossmoyne Senior High School.

Successful VET Qualifications at Cecil

Andrews include Certificate II Music and Certificate II

Live Production, Theatre & Events

Jeremy Bruce, Cecil Andrew’s Certificate II Sport & Recreation teacher/trainer was named WA Premier’s Secondary Teacher of the Year at the 2013 WA Education Awards on 2 December.

Jeremy was recognised for his academic and community leadership of the lower school Specialist AFL Program which then feeds into the upper school VET qualification of Sport & Recreation that the school auspices with Central Institute of Technology. Jeremy has been at the school for 10 years and has inspired countless students to be proud athletes, develop life skills such as team work and communication. He has forged a strong partnership with East Fremantle Football Club, regularly coordinating football clinics, training, excursions and camps with professional athletes. All these then inform his training of the students.

Three graduating students from 2012 who did a combination of Certificate II Music and Certificate II Live

Production, Theatre & Events were awarded the national Australian Vocational Student Prize. In 2013 Cecil Andrews nominated a student, who combined the Certificate II Live Production, Theatre & Events (VET in Schools) with the Profile course Certificate III Events at Central Institute of Technology.

Many of Cecil Andrews’ students choose to attend Profile and PAiS courses at external providers because it allows them

to specialise early and move quickly into vocational

work or training after completing school.

The majority of students that completed various pre-

apprenticeships this year have walked straight out of school into full

time apprenticeships.

The VET in Schools offerings are expanding next year with the introduction of Certificate II Business, Certificate II Information, Digital Media & Technology as well as a graphics arts focused Certificate II in Visual Arts.

100 Meals a Week for Foodbank

Hospitality students at Sevenoaks prepared over 500 meals as part of the Prepare, Produce, Provide community based project, which was sponsored by the Crown Casino, Food Bank and the Home Economics Institute of Australia.

Sevenoaks was one of 12 selected Perth schools, who offer the VET Hospitality Course, to be given the opportunity to get involved in the event.

The aim of the project is to value add to rescued, donated, surplus and local produce to develop nutritious meals that will assist people in need.

The four week program took place in Term 2 across nominated schools (which included from the South Metropolitan Region, Belmont City College, Willetton SHS and Thornlie SHS) where students, teachers, industry chefs and Crown Perth apprentices worked together to produce nearly 7000 meals to be distributed through Foodbank WA.

Final production was overseen by the Crown Casino’s various restaurant Head Chefs. “This program is excellent for our students because it shows them what a career in hospitality would be like but also they have the opportunity to help the community,” notes their teacher Kate DeKlerk. “The students come in every day with their white jacket on and have such pride in themselves that they are involved in this program.”

The mixed year 11 and 12 classes have cooked a range of different meals including Mexican, chicken and couscous, curry and soups. All this work culminated on July 3.

Recognition of all the numerous organizational efforts by stakeholders to complete such an enormous but worthwhile event was enjoyed by students and participants at the Celebration Expo held at Crown.

South Metro performed extremely well in the WorldSkills competition in 2013 with some students getting the opportunity to compete further. Automotive Services Liam Brown, Tammeeshya Vukojevich and Nathan Lazzarini from Sevenoaks Senior College winning two gold medals and a bronze Commercial Cookery Hongxi Li from Rossmoyne SHS won gold and Zac Barnes from Applecross SHS won silver. 2013 Hillside Farm Rural Skills Tucked into the foothills of Martin between two blue metal quarries is 150 acres of land used by Kelmscott SHS agricultural students and a program managed by Yule Brook College known as the Rural Skills program. Ten local high schools send Year 10 students one day per week to experience the hands on program of farm maintenance.

Most students qualify for a Certificate I in Agrifood Operations by the end of the year.

Machinery maintenance, construction projects, vegetable growing, fencing, stock management (cows, sheep, chickens and fish) and qualifying for a farm driving license are some of the activities at the farm. There are three qualified teachers who run the course and they have an extensive range of farming and practical skills. The farm is very well equipped with a mechanical workshop, plant nursery, rotary hoe, welders, Utes, trucks, tractors, ride on mowers and many portable hand tools for the students to learn with.

Ten Yule Brook Year 10 students (six boys and four girls) have been attending every Tuesday and have experienced a huge range of activities including planting native vegetation at HOLCIM quarry, tailing lambs, feeding livestock, growing and harvesting vegetables to take home, carting hay, qualifying to drive various vehicles, learning to weld and maintaining equipment.

One student had a perfect attendance record and one only missed one day. Six of

the ten excelled in all areas and completed

their Certificate I in Agrifood Operations.

The staff at Hillside agree that the students

from Yule Brook College are a pleasure to teach as they are willing to tackle

most tasks, are friendly, well-mannered and genuinely interested in the

farm’s activities.

Canning Coalition

The Roadshow to Employment pilot program, facilitated by Leah O’Brien was aimed at disengaging or disengaged students in year 10. Their aim was to address the barriers students face in gaining and maintaining meaningful employment and to enhance their capacity in managing their own career development by delivering a series of brokered workshops to students.

Public schools that participated include Belmont City College, Kent St SHS, Southern River College, Kelmscott SHS and Kalamunda SHS.Stakeholder involvement in developing these workshops came from a variety of areas including Polytechnic West, Central Institute of Technology, ARAFMI, Start Smart, Holyoake and DrugArm, Wridgeways Removals and the AFRA partners.

There was also representation from the South Metropolitan Region in facilitating mental stillness sessions for students to give them tools to manage stress, achieve mental clarity and resliance.

CCI-SMYL

The Work Inspiration framework was adopted by CCI-SMYL Partnership Brokers after schools, industry and community stakeholders highlighted the need to re-think the existing work experience model. The Partnership Brokers utilise the framework to customise work experience on behalf of industry stakeholders and schools. Programs have been developed and are being delivered in the Fremantle - Peel region by Shell Prelude, Stocklands and Aged Care residential facilities. CCI-SMYL are also working with TNT, Transfield Services and have engaged several local governments in the South Metro Region to develop programs for schools in the Fremantle to Peel area.

For more information on the Work Inspiration Framework go http://www.workinspiration.com.au or contact Partnership Brokers at CCIWA on 0438 953 307.

Internships at Yule Brook

Year 10 and 11 students at Yule Brook were encouraged to further their real world knowledge and skills by taking on an internship in an area that interests them. Under the guidance of a mentor, students learnt new skills and applied themselves to their internship as they would a real job.

Students undertook work in areas such as hospitality, construction, retail and many other areas.

An internship with Silver Trowel gave year 10 student Alan Sime opportunities to learn skills in carpentry and bricklaying whilst year 11 student Jason Jackson did his internship with Bunnings developing skills in stock handling, displays and team work

Outside of our school based program in 2013 we had one Aboriginal School Based Trainee in Graphic Design and we also have a Business and Hospitality Trainee who will complete in 2014. A couple of students completed Cert III in

Education Support and a very successful student completing a Cert IV in Preparation into Enrolled Nursing.

Finally we partnered with Challenger Institute of Technology to deliver Cert I in leadership Development to our Aboriginal year 10 students. This was very successful and we have engaged them to deliver again in 2014.

The best news for 2013 was that Armadale came 21st in the Top 50 VET Schools for Achievement, and if you take out the private schools and the agricultural schools we were the 5th public school on the list. This means that we have set up some wonderful pathways for our students. The hard work and dedication of our VET teachers needs to be commended as well as they have done a wonderful job making sure that all our students reach their potential.

So we at Armadale are well placed for the changes to the WACE from 2015 and 2014 will be another incredibly busy year with all the extra VET being delivered.

STUDENT WINS GOLD IN VETiS WORLDSKILLS COMPETITION IN ELECTROTECHNOLOGY

Students from Comet Bay College in Secret Harbour entered the VETiS Worldskills competition and won Gold, Silver and Bronze. The Winner of the Gold Medal was Luke Norman, his pathway started in Year 10 when he attended a Try a Technology funded by the School Pathways Program and run by Challenger Institute in Beaconsfield.

Even at this early stage of his career his dedication and enthusiasm was on show when he attended and completed the short introduction to the world of electronics - even with a broken arm. The program inspired Luke enough to continue to focus on Electronics and Engineering in Years 11 and 12.

Luke has continued to excel and gone on to complete a Certificate II Electronics Traineeship at Raytheon and is now also a finalist in the Challenger Institute’s VET Student of the Year. Currently Luke is in Year 12 and consolidating his qualifications through

the inclusion of Physics, Mathematics a Cert III Engineering - Technical as part of his VET Program that also includes his continuing work placement at Raytheon.

Adam Keilor is also a success story completing a Certificate II Electrotechnology in Year 11 he has won Silver in the same Worldskills competition and is focussed on achieving his goal of becoming an Electrical Apprentice. The Bronze went to a Year 12 student Blake Turner, another aspiring electrical apprentice.

The VET program continues to go from strength to strength with a significant increase in the number of students applying for a competitive place. The College offers qualifications at school or via flexible learning arrangements with State and Private Training Providers.

The Building Inclusive Learning Directions (BUILD) program continues to grow. This program focuses on students from Year 8 to 12 who will be able to access more School Curriculum and Standards Authority Endorsed programs. In our Year 11 Vocational Pathway programs, (BUILD) students attend school for 3 days of the week, attend TAFE for one day and undertake a work placement on the day they do not attend TAFE. Students were able to access a variety of courses which include: Cert II Community Services Cert II Electrotechnology Cert IV Preparation for Entry into Enrolled Nursing Cert IV Business Cert III Hospitality Cert II Process Plant Operations. Cert II Health Services Cert II Construction

In Years 11 and 12 Vocational students have access to School Based Traineeships which allows students to commence a traineeship while also attaining their WACE certificates. Under these arrangements students are both full time students and part time employees, with the same employment and training responsibilities as other trainees. In 2013 two Year 12 BUILD students successfully completed a certificate IV through Central TAFE in Business and Prep Entry into Enrolled Nursing. This is an outstanding achievement and one that both the school and students can feel justly proud of achieving. Never before has a student at Melville achieved this certificate level. Vocational courses continue to expand with more and more teachers identifying that these certificate courses provide more relevance to students and provide better outcomes.

In 2013 83% of students in Year 12 undertook VET as either stand-alone or as integrated programs, complementing their WACE course studies. A credible 119 students (96%) of these completed a Certificate II or higher. This placed Melville SHS as 14th in The “First 50 VET Schools” for Participation and 17th in the “First VET Schools” for Achievement.

In 2013 Melville SHS achieved an outstanding Attainment rate of 99%, the highest public school rate in the state. This compared with a “Like School” attainment rate of 66% and a state wide attainment rate of 75%.

SOUTH METRO VET NEWSLETTER 2013 14

27th June saw the first South Metro VET Forum held at North Lake Senior Campus which brought together 83 representatives from across 41 organisations including employers, RTOs, STPs, GTOs, Local Partnership Brokers, Industry Training Councils and apprenticeship mentoring services. We had representation from more than 40 government secondary schools in the South Metropolitan Region including VET & WPL Coordinators, Career and VET teaching staff along with other Department of Education staff equating to nearly 70 people attending the forum and workshops.

Hospitality students, with Helen Barton (teacher in charge), at North Lake did an excellent job providing an assortment of delicious pastries, biscuits and muffins for 150 people for morning tea. Lunch included soup, damper, sandwiches and some unforgettable mini lemon meringue tarts! In addition students went around to each of the attendees and stall holders taking espresso coffee orders for around 50 people which was very well received.

Much organisation and planning went into the smooth running of this event, special mention goes to Sarah Hardman VET Coordinator from North Lake Senior Campus - nothing was too much trouble for Sarah who anticipated what we needed, came up with solutions to various challenges and was always accessible even on her non-teaching days!

CCI-SMYL Partnership Broker for the Fremantle-Peel area assisted with planning and trestle tables.

Other mention goes to Peter Wilkinson, Jim Miller and Dean McKenna from North Lake who provided invaluable assistance on the day.

The morning started with the exhibition from stakeholders held in North Lake’s gymnasium which proved to be a great success, the only downside mentioned by attendees was “there was not enough time to get through all of them”.

One of the notable successes from the exhibition was a student who hadn’t been able to find a suitable plumbing work placement acquired one that day from their teacher making contact with a stallholder.

Following morning tea, Margaret Collins, Regional Executive Director gave a welcome address to attendees before the first workshop which saw a panel of representatives from Challenger, Polytechnic, Central, VETiS managers and CDAs address how students can improve their performance with STP applications and courses.

This was followed by Craig Wright who facilitated discussion on how teacher/trainers can maintain currency using TIPS and other strategies including industry perspective and

compliance.

We ended the day with Graeme Keesing and Jonny Keyes

delivering two practical sessions aimed at helping VET reporters get a better grasp of Reporting to Parents VET

monitoring tools using SEN functions.

Participants found the workshops quite valuable and were keen for a

second VET forum in 2014. Some of the feedback indicated that follow up workshops were needed in RTP and Vocational Currency

Overall a fantastic outcome and we hope that the South Metro VET forum to be held in 2014 will be just as well received and yes coffee will be available much earlier!

Three Industry Currency Workshops were developed and facilitated by the South Metro Region along with industry relevant RTOs and the Industry Training Council (ITC) FutureNow for the Information Technology, Sport and Recreation and Hospitality industries in the month of November.

The workshops gave teachers another opportunity to maintain currency within their industry by providing a setting for formal and informal collaboration and information sharing. Major outcomes were to:

• address teacher skill gaps by providing current practices within the industry

• encourage industry engagement and partnerships within schools

• increase teacher awareness of TIPS

Hospitality and Sport and Recreation Industry Currency Workshops facilitated by Angela Kiely and Future Now were piloting using TIPS, the Teacher Industry Placement Scheme to provide additional professional learning opportunities for teachers to maintain currency without the cost to schools.

ICT Industry Awareness and Currency Workshop, facilitated by AICT and assisted by Faye Jones was aimed at a broader audience of VET coordinators, teachers and other non-teaching staff.

These workshops are just one of the many ways teachers can maintain currency. See IBSA VET Practitioner Capability Framework for a more comprehensive look at identifying and developing the different areas of capability.

Each industry provided different challenges and the needs, skills and knowledge of each practitioner varied greatly across the industry areas but overall quite a successful first attempt at running these workshops.

Hospitality Industry Currency Workshop

By Angela Kiely

Held on the 19th November at Belmont City College Trade Training Centre with 23 attendees across 16 South Metro schools opened with myself and Debra Kruske, Tourism and Hospitality project manager for FutureNow giving an overview of TIPS, the rationale behind the workshop and the importance of creating sustainable partnerships between schools, Industry, ITC’s and Training. Followed by Greg Farnan, Operations Manager from Old Brewery and Craig O’Donoghue, Venue Manager at Lakers Tavern, looking at some of the current issues within the industry such as retaining employees, alcohol within the industry and what employers are looking for in new apprentices/employees.

Dot Wilson Business Development Consultant at HGT spoke on the high attrition rate of apprentice chefs and how to maximize student success.

Dean Keys, chef and hospitality facilitator reflected on his own hospitality journey which took him to different parts of the globe and most importantly how to keep inspired and stay focused towards your goals in this dynamic and diverse industry.

Luke Ainsworth barista from Deli Chi Chi gave a demonstration by providing about 30 coffees to order along with his volunteer assistant Kate deKlerk from Sevenoaks Senior College helping in this fast paced production line in what appeared to be some serious organized chaos! He also gave some useful barista tips, practices and resources for teachers.

Special mention goes to Kerriann Henderson for her fantastic support in assisting with the smooth running of the workshop from catering to preparing the venue as well as the hospitality students who prepared a delicious morning tea.

Simon Harris, Sous chef at Chester’s Restaurant took us through preparing a variety of dishes from deboning a chicken. The final product was a delicious green risotto with herb chicken which was plated to industry standards. It was quite hectic in the kitchen but the energy was high and the feedback extremely positive as participants strived to get lunch prepared in time.

Emily Gunkelman, TAE learning facilitator from NCT took us through until the end of the day by further enhancing our knowledge of training packages, qualifications and units of competency as many attendees were teaching hospitality for the first time this year. Emily organized people into groups to ‘nut’ out action plans and strategies for keeping current. Certificates of participation were given at the end of the workshop.

Some of the feedback was exceptional which was very encouraging for future workshops in this industry. I feel the workshop successfully targeted teachers and education assistants to further develop their confidence in delivering qualifications in hospitality.

Sport and Recreation Industry Currency Workshop

By Angela Kiely

Rachael Davidson, Sport and Recreation Project Manager for Future Now alongside myself, opened the workshop for the 23 attendees from 20 South Metro schools. Dana Pimley from Sports Medicine Australia provided a 30min session on the work safety and health unit, Patrick De Haan, West Australian Football Commission gave a lecture on current trends and issues in the industry with a football focus and Kelvin Browner, Woodvale Senior College kept us up to date on current technologies alongside Brendan Wright from Community to Go which utilizes an App to keep everyone, whether it be school or sporting community continuously connected and up to date.

Kyal Oh from WA Ultimate Frisbee gave us an energetic demonstration followed by practical application of this sport. Kyal supplied teachers with useful lesson instruction to implement back at school. Attendees really enjoyed this part of the day the most for one of the obvious reasons that they were outdoors and being active.

The final workshop encouraged teachers to look at the new core unit in more detail SISXIND211 – Develop and update sport and recreation knowledge facilitated by Claire Middleton from Central Institute. Attendees were given certificates of participation at the end of the day.

There is an immense diversity of disciplines within the sporting and outdoor contexts even at the school level. Future workshops will require greater teacher collaboration for its future success.

School Pathways Program

The School Pathways Program by Gail Manton, Program Manager

The School Pathways Program (A National Partnership between the Federal Government, Defence Material Organisation and the Western Australian Department of Education) has successfully initiated facilitated and supported school-based pathways (trade, paraprofessional and professional) in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in 22 public schools in Western Australia since 2010.

16 of the 22 schools in the School Pathways Program (SPP) are in the South Metropolitan Education Region (South Fremantle SHS, Kent Street SHS, John Tonkin College, Applecross SHS, Atwell College, Hamilton SHS, Lynwood SHS, Melville SHS, North Lake Senior Campus, Willetton SHS, Armadale SHS, Como Secondary College, Rossmoyne SHS, Comet Bay College, Halls Head Community College and Pinjarra SHS). The students in the SPP have successfully participated in a range of industry relevant training and work placement opportunities. These include Industry Career Expos, Try a Trade, Try a Technology, Industry Incursions/Excursions, Certificate II in Telecommunications and Certificate II Traineeships in Engineering and Electronics.

In 2013, 56 students successfully completed traineeships in Engineering and Electronics, completing their qualifications at Challenger Institute of Technology, Polytechnic West, Fremantle Maritime Trade Training Centre, Curtin Trade Training Centre and work placements at a range of Defence and Allied Industry workplaces. This has led to many of these students being offered, in 2014, an apprenticeship with their host employer. Others, with the support of their School VET coordinators, the SPP team and the ELITOS are continuing their VET STEM studies at school and with training providers.

The South Metropolitan Regional ETILOS have contributed to the success of this program through regular communication and collaboration with School Pathways Program Manager, Gail Manton. This partnership has played an important role in in establishing and facilitating partnerships between schools, training, higher education and industry to ensure the best possible outcomes for students and we look forward to continuing our successful partnerships with South Metro schools and the ETILOs to provide successful VET Science, Technology and Engineering pathways. Currently we are working together on a Trades Maths initiative to support VET pathways.
