YOUR FUTURE YOUR CHOICEVOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET/TAFE)Vocational Education and Training (VET) is a great way to get a head start in the career you want to pursue. VET provides a stepping stone into the workplace or a pathway to further study. It caters to a range of skill and knowledge bases, from certificate to advanced diploma qualifications and, because of this, VET can help you start a new career, assist you in learning new skills or improve your skills in your current industry.

ONLINE, FLEXIBLE AND EXTERNAL TRAININGSouth Metropolitan TAFE offers a variety of online and flexible study options. Study can be conducted completely online and off-campus, or a mixture of off and on-campus. The benefit of online study is the ability to study whenever is most convenient for you – your time, your place, your pace.

APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPSSouth Metropolitan TAFE is the largest provider of apprenticeship training in Western Australia. We deliver apprenticeship training across a huge range of industries.

Apprenticeships and traineeships provide you with paid work while you learn all aspects of a trade or industry. They involve planned learning over a period agreed by you, your employer and South Metropolitan TAFE. A large number of apprenticeships and traineeships are also available to part-time workers.

To find out more about an apprenticeship, contact an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider on 13 38 73 or call South Metropolitan TAFE on 1800 001 001.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING (VET) IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMS

South Metropolitan TAFE is one of the largest providers of VET in Schools (VETiS) programs in Western Australia and works collaboratively with government and non-government secondary schools to develop a broad range of programs suitable for students in Years 10, 11 and 12. VETiS programs enable school students to gain knowledge and skills relevant to industry and employment while studying towards their secondary graduation. On successful completion of their VETiS program and secondary studies, students receive their WA Certificate of Education (WACE) as well as units of competency or an entire qualification from a nationally recognised industry training package.

South Metropolitan TAFE offers VETiS programs in partnership with schools and through school based traineeships and school based apprenticeships. Parents interested in VETiS pathways should discuss their child’s options with their school VET coordinator.

More information can be obtained by phoning 1800 001 001 or email [email protected].

GENERAL INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTSEach qualification (other than access and bridging courses) has a set of entrance requirements, which are designed to ensure all those who gain entry to a course have the competencies or skills and abilities required to effectively participate in the program.

Entrance requirements differ based on the complexity of a qualification and are currently expressed as specified secondary school levels in English and mathematics, alternative AQF qualifications OR a prerequisite competency-based qualification (i.e. a lower level qualification, such as requiring completion of a certificate III before applying for a certificate IV course).

SELECTION CRITERIAEach course has a limited number of places. Selection criteria are used to rank eligible applicants when there are more applicants than places available in a course. For the majority of courses, applicants need only provide documentary evidence that they meet the entrance requirements. However, some of the more popular (competitive) courses will require applicants to address selection criteria.

The selection criteria model gives points for:

1. Secondary education or qualification pathways (max 60 points)

2. Work experience/employment (max 30 points)

Students can access the latest and most detailed Information, including minimum entrance requirements and addressing selection criteria, on the Training WA website (www.trainingwa.wa.gov.au).

Where to start?Students are more likely to choose a career which suits them if they understand their own likes and dislikes. As a parent, you can help your child develop self-awareness by discussing these simple ideas with them.

Remember, skills they use at school, at work, at home, in the community and on the sporting field are all relevant:

• Askyourchildwhattheyhaveandhave not enjoyed learning, and why

• Supportyourchildwhentheywant to try new things and expand their horizons

• Pursuenewintereststogetherto reinforce the importance of learning at all ages

• Helpyourchildgettoknowwhatthey are good at

• Helpyourchildtoinvestigatejobsthat relate to their interests.

What’s next? Most tertiary education courses will require a pass mark in English or its equivalent. Many will also require a pass in maths, South Metropolitan TAFE recommends that English and math based courses be completed by those students hoping to continue into further education.

Encourage your child to keep their options open when selecting their subjects for further study and remind them to take their time.

Practical steps for parentsBelow are some steps you can take to help your child succeed in the changing world of education, work and training:

• Talktoschoolstaffabouttheirperformance, strengths and abilities

• Ensurethereisabalancebetween study, work, rest and play

• Providetimeandspaceforhomework

• Settasksaroundthehometoencourage responsible work habits

• Encourageparticipationinvoluntary, casual or part-time work so skills and work practices can be learned

• Encourageyourchildtokeeptheir options open; the wider the range for consideration, the more likely they are to find one that works for them

• Interviewfriends, familyorneighbours in occupations of interest

• Gotocareerexposand open days.

PARENTS AND SCHOOL CAREER ADVISORS

South Metropolitan TAFE realises that helping your child decide which option to take when it comes to further education can be daunting.

ENGLISH, LANGUAGES AND FOUNDATION STUDIES

English and foundation studies courses cater to two broad groups; those who speak English and want to boost their confidence and employability, and those who come from non-English backgrounds and want to learn to understand, speak, read and write English.

There are courses designed for those who did not gain a qualification at high school, or never had the opportunity to finish Year 12, or who feel they left school too long ago.

Our access courses will bring you up to speed with what’s expected in the workplace and will enable you to go on to further study or find employment.
