GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - CALCITE MARBLE PROPERTIES
SOUTH SHERBROOKE TWP., EASTERN ONTARIO
INTRODUCTION
As a result of Ontario Geological Survey Open File Report 5378 by
V.C. Papertzian and P. Kingston in 1982 four claims were staked in
the vicinity of samples showing high-purity calcitic marble in the
northeast quarter of South Sherbrooke Township.
During May and June of 1984 a geological survey was carried out lor the claim owners, Steep Rock Resources Inc. of 710 - 40 University
Ave., Toronto, Ontario, M5J 2G5. This survey was carried out under
the supervision of the writer, Campbell Fox, Consulting Geologist, R.R. #4, Huntsville, Ontario, POA 1KO. The field mapping was done
by William T. Grant, geologist with carbonate mapping experience
with the Ontario Geological Survey during 1983 out of the Tweed
office. As an aid to mapping Ministry of Natural Resources air
photo #1.71-4436, 80-143, enlarged to a scale of 1" = 4 00', was used.
LOCATION fi ACCESS
The two properties are located 75 miles west of Ottawa and 12 miles
west of the Steep Rock calcite plant near Perth, by way of Provincial
Highway ffi. From Highway #7 the north property is reached about 2
miles north on County Road #5 and 1^ miles east by gravel road. The
south property is reached by County Road #5 two miles north of Hwy
#7 and by gravel road 2 miles to the southeast. See "Location Map".

GEOLOGY
A general succession of rock types from youngest to oldest, with
a brief description, is listed as follows:
!E^JlL^. JlL J^OB3. JLions;
LATH PRECAMBRIAN
GRANITIC INTRUSIVES - Granite to quartz monzonite, fine to medium grained, mostly massive, includes some pink granitic
pegmatite dikes
AMPHIBOLITE (METASEDIMENTS S META VOLCANICS ) - Hornblende-plagioclase
gneiss, fine to medium-grained
MARBLE ((CARBONATE METASEDIMENTS)
a. Calcitic, white, coarse grained
b. Dolomitic, white or grey, fine grained
c. Calcitic, white or grey, low graphite, phlogopite
d. Calcitic or dolomitic with calc-silicates
SILICEOUS METASEDIMENTS - fine grained, rusty, partly calcareous
. ~ On both properties the general lineation is a little
north of due east with a suggestion of drag folding in the silic
eous sediments in the middle of the N^ Lot 18, Cone. XI. In Cone. IX on the south group lineation is somewhat distorted by
the granitic intrusive.
3.
North of east trending swamps crossing the north part of both
properties could be underlain by high-purity calcitic marble.
White, coarse grained calcitic marble rock outcrops were found in
the carbonate sequence on the edge of these swamps. As the high
-purity calcitic marble is relatively soft it is more susceptible
to erosion than the harder carbonates and thus more likely to be
under lower areas such as swamps.
ECONOMIC GEOLOGY
The principal object in geological mapping was to outline potential
economic zones of high-purity calcitic marble.
Ri- J-PJL J 8, .Cgjic^^^jQ ~ ^ s mentioned under "structure" a possible
favourable zone is indicated beneath a north of east trending swamp
crossing the north part of these claims. It has a possible length
of over 2000 feet and calculated from a single dip on the west end
of 4 S 0 south a true thickness of less resistant marble beneath the
swamp of 250 feet is indicated.
There are 2 other indications of white, coarse grained, calcitic
marble on the north group but both appear to be of minor importance.
N-J5 Lot 20 Cone .T X - Of lesser importance but similar conditions
exist on the south claim group. The coarse grained, white calcitic
marble borders to the north of an irregular north of east trending
granitic intrusive located in the north part of the property.
The elongated swampy area on the north property is wholly enclosed
in a carbonate sequence. Conditions for the possibility of outlining
an economic zone of high-purity calcitic marble are more favourable
on the north property.
